No positive results for sure on the mole situation yet, however after "seeding" a few mole runs Saturday, I don't see any fresh activity in the yard. However, working in the garage a little while ago I did on a few occasions, pick up the scent of decomposition for a second or two. Will wait for SWMBO to arrive home, her sniffer is much more accurate than mine. Maybe we got one? One run did run right alongside of the garage.

Hi Guys,
Not much going on here. I have been putting in alot of miles on the bike lately ( 20 miles on Friday,20 on Saturday and 15 yesterday ). I am planning a larger one again tomorrow so am getting any supplies I need on the trail packed in my camelbak ( Multi tool,first aid kit ,spare tube,tire pump and a few other items ). I think I might have a small leak in the front tire so its good thing I will have a spare with me in case I have to replace it out on the trails.
On the railroad front I have a list of stuff that I want to do on the layout over the winter and have been adding to it. Video game front, still in the air on whether I want to get Madden 25 this year. Any of you guys play the madden series? still cant believe fall is right around the corner.
Well, back to packing I go as I will be heading out early in the morning. Around 5:30am

Garry - Thanks for the info on the Sante Fe & PRR sleepers. That was new to me. Sort of proves again that you can do anything in modeling railroading and it will be okay and prototypical. For instance, we did get another couple of hours railfanning in yesterday, and for the first time, I caught an empty crude oil headed west with a consist of NS leading, followed by a Union Pacific and 2 CSX. I started railfanning around 2006, and that's the first time I've seen CSX on NS's tracks. Probably part of a run thru with the Union Pacific. But it does show anything can show up anywhere.
We did go out to dinner for the wife's birthday and we both had a delicious meal. She had a barbecued chicken dish with mixed vegtables, and I had a strip steak, baked potatoe and green beans. All washed down with a glass of Chardonay. Returning home, I gave her a couple of tings I had gotten for her. One was a gift card for Barnes & Noble. She likes these as she can't see well enough to read anymore, so she listens to audio books quite a lot. I also got her a couple of pieces of Dept. 56 Halloween Village to add to her collection. Later the phone started ringing with friends and relatives calling to wish her Happy Birthday. I think she was on the phone for like 3 hours.
One of the calls was from our nephew, who told her his family went camping last week and where they camped was right by busy CSX tracks. When the wife tried describing where he was talking about, I couldn't figure out where this place is, but as we are having dinner with them next Sunday, I'll find out then. Don't get me wrong, I love her dearly, but that woman has absolutely no sense of direction.Even before her eyesight started to go south, I often wondered how she found her way home.
We went out for breakfast this morning, then grocery shopping and a couple of errands. Got home around 10:30, which is very early in the day for a Monday. I've got one load of wash in, but not planning on doing a whole lot more after that.
Ray - Havd a neighbor who just returned from a couple of days up at Seneca Lake with his girlfriend. He heard us talk about our annual trips up there and decided to visit. They stayed on the east shore in Hector. They said they enjoyed all the places we recommended, although they couldn't get to them all. They plan to go back next year, but for a longer stay. Glad you were there to catch the visitor. We always were very careful of visitors to the fire station when I was working. Crash trucks are very high. The floor of the cab can be 6' off the ground and it is straight up. Little kids always thought it would be great to jump from the cab to the concrete floor or ramp. I've seen guys I worked with who got in and out of those trucks thousands of times fall and get hurt. We didn't have a pole from the 2nd floor bunkroom to the trucks, we had a chute. It was a metal pipe that you slid down, The bad part was the bottom of the chute was about 2' off the floor. If you weren't ready, your rearend could hit the concrete floor really hard. It finally got to the point where we didn't allow visitors to use the chute because they simply wouldn't listen when we explained how to use it properly. I guess I'm just old and cranky, but it sometimes seems like you just can't help certain people. Oh well, I promise if I ever make it up there, I'll pay to attention to what you have to say. That is, unless I think I know a better way.

Well as expected w**k was very busy with a gun show in town. Lots of people looking for stuff the show did not have, then getting mad at us because we did not have it. Lots of conspiracy nuts too regarding ammo shortages. Gets old after awhile.
Back to w**k again today. Benn too tired to do any modeling or layout w**k.

I'm up and running with a few shoulder muscles I had forgotten I had. Not terrible though. Hope the guy I caught falling yesterday fared as well.
Zoe, I'll have a bowl of Pump[kin Seed Flax Granola, skim milk, and a cup (maybe 3) of dark roast coffee to start the day.
My blood sugar has been a bit high the last few days. Been eating too many high carbo foods and the stress of the upcoming reunion is to blame I think. Last night it was 155 before bed and this morning it is 127. That's 20 points higher than i like to see it on both of them. So I will count my carbs today. and see what happens.
Currently 74°F outside with a high in the high 70's this afternoon. Probably will kick on the air conditioner before lunchtime. So far I can see shadows outside! Yesterday I only made 16.26 kWh but since I was gone and nothing was running except the refrigerator, I still came out +5 kWh for the day.
Jeffrey, glad you are doing so well and in good spirits. Keeping you in my prayers still!

Welp, didn’t tackle the Rose of Sharon yesterday. Maybe today depending. I still have to paint in the stairway of the apartment. The walls today and have arrangements for the tenant to paint the steps tomorrow. As for the rest of the day, more yardwo8k I suppose unless the phone rings.

Well, I had a great weekend with our daughter Annie. She ran her first triathlon on Sunday, so I drove up to Maine to watch and take pictures. This took place at a state park, with the swim in the ocean. They closed the park at 7 AM, so I had to leave the house at 4:30 AM to make sure I'd get there in time. It turned out to be a spectacular day - no wind, sunshine and not too hot.
This was Annie's first triathlon, so she started in the first group with the novices. The first leg was a 500 yard swim. She's a good swimmer, but she hasn't competed in years. Still, I wasn't too surprised to see her come out of the water only a stroke or two behind the leader. Unfortunately, she's a real novice at biking, and the course had a lot of hills, so she fell well behind there and then plugged through the run. As she said, she was just proud to have run that whole part, and not had to stop and walk. She and her training partner finished together, although the transponders they all wore gave her a tenth of a second margin. To her surprise when she looked at the online results later on, she was only 31 seconds behind the third-place finisher in her age group. Next time....
That evening, we had dinner in Portland, a fine, walkable small city with a lot of nice restaurants. We ended up eating outdoors by a small park where a pair of street musicians were playing classic jazz. The guitarist was mostly just chording, but the saxaphone player was playing clean and strong. He had a great command of the repertoire. I had to ask. He was 12 years old.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

On the whole; generally speaking; all things considered
Origin:
Many phrases are wrongly ascribed a nautical origin just because they sound like mariners' lingo. This one really is and, like many such nautical phrases, it originated in the days of sailing vessels..
To get a sense of the original meaning of the phrase we need to understand the nautical terms 'by' and 'large'. 'Large' is easier, so we'll start there. When the wind is blowing from some compass point behind a ship's direction of travel then it is said to be 'large'. Sailors have used this term for centuries; for example, this piece from Richard Hakluyt's The Principall Navigations, Voiages, and Discoveries of the English Nation, 1591:
"When the wind came larger we waied anchor and set saile."
When the wind is in that favourable 'large' direction the largest square sails may be set and the ship is able to travel in whatever downwind direction the captain sees fit.
'By' is a rather more difficult concept for landlubbers to understand. In simplified terms it means 'in the general direction of'. Sailors would say that to be 'by the wind' is to face into the wind or within six compass points of it.
The earliest known reference to 'by and large' in print is from Samuel Sturmy, in The Mariners Magazine, 1669:
"Thus you see the ship handled in fair weather and foul, by and learge."
To sail 'by and large' required the ability to sail not only as earlier square-rigged ships could do, that is, downwind, but also against the wind. At first sight, and for many non-sailors I'm sure second and third sight too, it seems impossible that a sailing ship could progress against the wind. They can though. The physics behind this is better left to those who know it well. Suffice it to say that it involves the use of triangular sails, which act like airplane wings and provide a force that drags the ship sideways against the wind; by this technique and by careful angling of the rudder the ship can make progress towards the wind.
The 19th century windjammers like Cutty Sark were able to maintain progress 'by and large' even in bad wind conditions by the use of many such aerodynamic triangular sails and large crews of able seamen.

ULRICH: Happy Birthday to ya! Of the fire rigs you showed, I like THAT old Mercedes best . The low miles on your Engine makes sense, especially if it was with a dept. THAT didn't get many runs. Around here, Clarence Fire only goes out the door maybe a dozen times in a year. On the other had, my first dept., Central City Fire, we rolled about every other day, sometimes twice or even three times in a day. Truly a case of "your results may vary!" if ever!

With all the concern for Jeff, I did not want to say a few days ago I celebrated my 5th year of my "second life". It was five years ago on the 13th of August when I had my helicopter ride from here in KY to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, TN.. My heart stopped beating six times. I'm very thankful for the past five years of mostly normal life.

Hello from Dauphin Hall at the Penn College Campus everyone!
Obviously I'm feeling pretty good right now. Did some shopping around today for my dorm, and only now is it starting to look a little full. Got a poster that says "Keep calm and eat chocolate". There was a booth a booth at the athletic field during a get-together that made custom signs. I decided to have mine say "A-10 Pilots Only!". Also picked up a Penn College hat to add to my small collection of Penn College shirts and hoods. Classes start tomorrow, and I think that I'll do pretty well.

Was a busy day for Diesel Day out at the Museum. After a slow start we had good crowds for the rest of the day. I spent almost all day on the Eire Caboose (C-245) as car host. Had one almost really bad incident. An elderly gentleman lost his footing getting off the car on our first trip back to the trolley after starting the day. Luckily I was positioned so that he fell into my outstretched arm and I was able to cushion and break his fall. I did take two of us to get his legs back under him. He wasn't hurt and he thanked us and went on his way back to the trolley. That could have been a very bad injury and a trip to the hospital so easily!!! Reinforced why I stand where I do as folks get off the train and watch things carefully. I think I shall have some sore muscles tomorrow though. (Already do!)
Rest of the day went very smoothly and we had a lot of great questions from visitors. Basically a lot of work, but a lot of fun as well.
I'm heading out to bed, so I hope you all have a pleasant night!
Been playing some more of Starfleet1. I got promoted to vice-admiral and got my butt kicked on the very next mission. The Galactica is out of commission for a while so I'm now commanding the UGAS Yamato. I went out and exacted revenge on the enemy for what they did to the Galactica and came back with a stunning victory. Not much else happening today. Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

The only problem with "emigres" is the eventually come back I was looking for a more, final solution. So we seeded the tunnels with We will see how this works over the next few days. IF there is no joy, then we go for a spring loaded Mole trap. Kind of a cross between a mousetrap and a guillotine.
Wanted to airbrush some stuff today, but after the mole seeding, the humidity got the best of me, so I went down the basement to relax. Silly me. See our washer empties into a stationary tub. SWMBO, in her own omnipotent way, decided too much lint was going down the drain, into the pump, and getting pumped upwards a few feet for the run to the septic system. So she put a piece of screen over the sink drain. Worked ok for the 1st load of laundry, but the 2nd load plugged the drain, overflowed the tub and soaked the basement floor! After removing the clog, shop vacuuming about 8 gallons of water up, then setting the dehumidifier up, I was too steamed to do anything but veg in front of the tube!
I filled her in on all the details as soon as she got home from getting a pedicure.
Hopefully she wont poison me with dinner!

The only truly effective way to eliminate moles is to trap them and, for that purpose, you need a trap designed to "eliminate" the mole. All other so-called remedies do not really work.
