Good morning. It's 75° with 100% humidity. The high will be 92° but will feel like 104°.Looks like the weather is tapering off. Instead of being hot and wet it'll be just hot. No plans for today. Yesterday I worked on two of the Apple IIe's disk drives, a Franklin Ace10 and an Apple Disk II. The original beige paint on the metal shells was badly cracked, scratched and crazed and in places was just falling off. The shells were removed and stripped, sanded and repainted. They're now primer gray with a heavy coat of Clear Flat.No layout plans as of yet. I don't intend on doing anything on that until I've recovered from the upcoming amputation and can get around on my own. I don't want to start something now and have to abandon it then pick it up later or have to rip it out and change it due to some new limitation.

Good morning, everyone. Massachusetts has cooled down considerably. Last night I slept with the fan on and no AC needed, for the first time in over a week. Ahhhh.....
Wife Penny remains in Florida taking care of her parents. Her Dad banged up his elbow last week, and is now in the hospital having it treated with antibiotics for the infection that developed. Her mom has mobility issues, and is condo-bound, so someone has to at least bring her food. These two people are 96 and 92, and they have stubbornly refused to even consider assisted living, which is really what they need. Hopefully, this incident will make them realize that they're not getting any younger. They live in a small but pleasant place, right on the ocean, but realistically they simply can't live independently anymore.
I, meanwhile, have been catching up on my recordings of the Tour de France. A typical stage of the race is 5 or 6 hours long, and since it's in France, there's a time shift so it takes place when I'm at work. So, I use the magic box beneath the TV and record it. This year, NBC has taken over the broadcast, and they are 30-40% commercials. I couldn't sit and just watch it.
And yesterday, since it cooled off and I was bike-psyched, I went for a ride myself. Only 15 miles or so, and there are no Alps between my house and the center of Concord, MA, but at least I felt some kinship to those intrepid riders out there in the French countryside.
Best wishes to all.

GOOD MONDAY MORNING!!!

Up to Snuff:
Meaning:
Initially, the phrase meant 'sharp and in the know'; more recently, 'up to the required standard'
Origin:
The simple origin:
Today the phrase means anything or anyone who isn't up to some sort of standard of quality. The origin in a way goes back to that also. Snuff is tobacco 'dust'. And, in the old days men carried around pouches of it, with spoons and graters. Soon, commercial mixes were the mainstream and the real connoisseurs of smoking prided themselves on being able to tell the real, pure grade snuff from the commercial stuff. Someone who couldn't tell the difference between pure quality tobacco and the mixture was said to be "not up to snuff."
The longer in-depth origin:
'Up to snuff' originated in the early 19th century. In 1811, the English playwright John Poole wrote Hamlet Travestie, a parody of Shakespeare, in the style of Doctor Johnson and George Steevens, which included the expression.
"He knows well enough The game we're after: Zooks, he's up to snuff." & "He is up to snuff, i.e. he is the knowing one."
"He knows well enough The game we're after: Zooks, he's up to snuff."
&
"He is up to snuff, i.e. he is the knowing one."
A slightly later citation of the phrase, in Grose's Dictionary, 1823, lists it as 'up to snuff and a pinch above it', and defines the term as 'flash'. This clearly shows the derivation to be from 'snuff', the powdered tobacco that had become fashionable to inhale in the late 17th century. The phrase derives from the stimulating effect of taking snuff. The association of the phrase with sharpness of mind was enhanced by the fashionability and high cost of snuff and by the elaborate decorative boxes that it was kept in.
The later meaning of 'up to standard', in the same sense as 'up to scratch' (we will see also {tomorrow}: 'start from scratch' began to be used around the turn of the 20th century}

Had a good crowd out at the museum today. Got asked some interesting questions, some of which I hadn't a clue on what the answer was, so that was my answer to the people... One of the Boy Scouts from the Handicapped Troop I work with showed up to do his final requirements for the RR Merit Badge. Unfortunately I was tied up with another group of people so I said hi and gave him the Boy Scout Handshake, and he went with another docent for a tour. I will sign off his card for the Merit Badge next time I see him as he just needs to meet with and tell me what he saw and why museums like ours are important.
Have a great night!

Hello everyone.
Have connections at PennTech tomorrow, and that is going to be a two day affair, so I'll be absent for a little while. Also got the D-Day strips touched up and have the rockets painted on it. Have the overspray painted over and look to get the detail paint on it so I can get those decals on!
Night everyone.

Plenty of lightning, thunder and rain today. Vernon Park Rd which is dirt is a muddy mess. It's only saving grace is that there's enough gravel on it to keep vehicles from sinking in or losing traction if the driver isn't acting like an idiot. Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.
Well howdy guys! Finally stopping in for a visit after a several-month hiatus. Work and family have been keeping me away from a lot of hobby interests. Today has been a slow day, especially since its been raining since shortly after we got out of church. Finally got started on the girl's bedroom (still remodeling the house). Got the old closet torn out, along with the old carpeting, now all we have to do is patch a couple of holes in the walls, drop 1/4" luan on the floor and the adhesive tiles, then a little paint and that's it and they are in their new room. THEN comes turning their old room into Michael's new room.
Oh yeah, got new news for y'all, we will have a new little one joining the family in January. Unknown as to the flavor of the child, but we should know next month. I haven't been able to do a single model railroad project in the past few months, heck, I have done well to just be able to read my monthly subscription to MRR. I have been able to check up on the 1:1 CSX railroad as it runs through the area. There is a new siding just south of Troy, in Brundidge, AL serving a cold-food storage place. No cars put in yet, but the siding is set and a fence is up around it. Can't wait to see mechanical reefers being loaded and unloaded in that siding... Always enjoy seeing new business in the area.
Welp, gotta go throw drumsticks on the grill for dinner, I plan to be back a little later to actually read through everything.

Found a few more things I am not happy with.
1. Right front rotor is so rusted the wheel will not turn! I hope that will be a easy fix.

Not super worried, I have fixed worse! Part is $116.00 but first I need to get it running before I worry about that!
Then I got confused! I have never worked well laying on my back with my hands stretched out over my head looking backwards!

Hello again. Finished with the D-Day stripes on the Typhoon. It'll need some touch ups, but it looks good as it is now.
Hello. Started adding my D-Day strips to the underside of my Typhoon's wings. I have yet to add the black strips, but have the white spray painted on. There was some accidental overspray, but it's nothing a small amount of touch up paint can't handle.
Hello people. There are way too many pages stacked up for me to wade through so I will not even try. I see Ulrich is busy with his political aspirations. I hope you are successful. Jeff: I have never seen that old computer so clean as it is now. It looks great! Are you going to sell it?

Morning All, HOT, HOT, HOT.
Currently at 0820, it is 75 with an expected high of 105. W**k day for me today, fortunately the store is air conditioned, but it was still very hot in there yesterday. Been too hot to do much when I get home, so the Walthers Brookside Dairy kit, is still waiting for the walls to be assembled. Several other modeling projects are waiting to be worked on, but the heat makes me so tired, when I get home all I want to do is under the ceiling fan with the ac running.
Well best be getting on with my day.
Prayers to all in need.

Morning fellas!
Coffee and toast if you please.
Beautiful day here today. The heat finally broke and it's a pleasant high 60's to low 70's in the forecast. Just came back in from the orchards, did some more trimming and pruning and didn't break a sweat for the first time in weeks it seems. Plan on being outside for most of the day...sooooo much to do and sooooo little time it seems. What's that song from that country group "Alabama"...hurry to get things done...or something like that? Well, that's how I feel.
Anyway, I hope everyone has a great day and gets a chance to do some modeling...I'll be jealous but at least someone will be having fun.
Happy modeling!
Don.

Good morning. It's 79° with 85% humidity. The high will be 88° but will feel like 101°.Looks like more rain and thunderstorms. Radar is showing a lot of activity down south and it's moving this way. No plans for today other than staying dry.

Good Morning!!!
Coffee and the Sunday Breakfast Buffet please. Thanks.
A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 86.
Standing outside yesterday hauling stuff upstairs I said, as the radio was going on about how much cooler it was than the week before and I thought..”where are you? What, did you turn the A/C down farther today? Cause I tell you what, it feels just as hot wo*king in it as it did yesterday.” It did feel cooler later in the evening after the sun went down.
Hey Bill, Good to see you again. I know what you mean by busy too.
Brad- Thanks for stopping in with the pictures and, thanks for Breakfast.
Oh I hate stairs. I travelled up and down those 19 steps soooooo many times yesterday it wasn’t even funny. 17 of those was carrying the paneling sheets and I tell you what, that upstairs landing was NEVER intended to have a 4X8 anything up there but by golly I gotter done. I told my friend (the friend/bosses daughter) last night when I went in for a…… cool off beverage afterwards,” Hey, good thing is my butt and upper thighs will be so toned, you’ll be jealous”. She agreed. At least that’s what I think she meant didn't quite catch everything she said. Why do women walk away while they talk to you? Anyway, long day yesterday with little progress, but removing and resetting kitchen cabinets took some time as did carrying stuff up them cotton pickin stairs. Everything but me is up there now so one trip should get me going. Brenda will wanna go out to eat so that’ll be a few hours break. I have to understand when she's busy that she can't do things, but that is NOT a two way street my friends. Nope, not according to the sheriff in THIS household. Things should speed up here this week. I hope. The 1st is coming really fast.
Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good Morning!
A nice and sunny Sunday morning. Fortunately, it cooled off at night, so sleep was not an issue.
Flo, a stack of pancakes, syrup, sausages, bacon & eggs, a glass of OJ and lots of coffee, please.
I took " a day off" from party work yesterday evening to join friends for BBQ and a glass of wine - it really felt good to get my mind set on other things. Working with volunteers is some experience, I can tell you. Things never get done on time and the way I want them. It finally ends up on my desk again, because "the buck stops here".
I do pray for the campaign time to be over soon -
Have a good one!

READ BETWEEN THE LINES:
Discern a meaning which isn't made obvious or explicit
The short version:
Writing in code has been around for a couple of centuries. And, many rulers and military leaders wrote in code. In fact, Charles I of England's papers were so coded that they weren't understood until mid 1800's. People who couldn't understand any coded document soon figured out that the meaning wasn't in the lines that were readable, but the message was written in invisible ink between the lines showing. Soon, society adopted the phrase "reading between the lines" to mean that any document which had hidden information which wasn't obvious when reading what was seen on the paper and to analyze it better
The longer detailed version:
This expression derives from a simple form of cryptography, in which a hidden meaning was conveyed by secreting it between lines of text. It originated in the mid 19th century and soon became used to refer to the deciphering of any coded or unclear form of communication, whether written or not; for example, one might say "She said she was happy to go to the party but didn't seem concerned when it was cancelled. Reading between the lines, I don't think she wanted to go in the first place".
The first example that I can find of the phrase in print is from The New York Times, August 1862:
Earl Russell's dispatch does not recite the terms of the note to which it is a reply, the letter assumes a somewhat enigmatical character, and the only resource we have is, as best we may, to "read between the lines" of this puzzling, but important, communication of the British Foreign Secretary
Hello all! Been a while since I stopped in the Diner.
I went to the National Train Show in Atlanta today. Took LOTS of pics (200+). I posted a thread with the Photobucket Album link for those who care to see it. Far too many pics for me to consider posting in a thread.
Didn't buy anything at the show, but NS had a booth and was giving away freebies, so I stocked up.
Lemme know what you think in my other thread.

Jeff .... Glad your Dad is looking out for you regarding this scenery. Let us Diners know if we can do anything for you. I know you said you would be working on your old computers during recovery, but maybe there are small model railroad projects, too, such as a kite to assemble.

Actually got some things accomplished on the layout today. Feels good to have a bit of time to do some things with it. I put several photos in the WPF thread. first time I have had anything to offer in a couple months I think. Here is the scene I have been doing:
Been pleasant outside even with the rain earlier today. Nice to have the high in the 70's for a change. Currently 67°F out there. Tomorrow I will be working as a museum guide. High should be 79° under mostly sunny skies. I can take that!
Prayers for all in need! Have a good night...
Well shortly after my previous post we got some rain here. It wasn't much but it was heavy enough I could hear it hitting my steel roof. There was a bit more rumbling but other than that it looks like the storms have moved on. Radar shows it to be clear here now. Looking ahead to tomorrow the forecast says there a 50% chance of more fun and games (rain, thunderstorms) tomorrow and possibly tomorrow night.I found an all-metal Varney F3A online and I may pick it up if I can scrape enough money together. With a little modification the body will fit on the F unit Frankenstein chassis that's currently sporting a plastic F7A Stewart body. That's all for now so I'll be calling it a night. See y'all tomorrow.
Well we've had a lot of ugly looking and loud weather today but very little rain. Mostly thunder and lightning. I had dinner at my fathers place today. Meat loaf, green beans, purple hull peas, mashed potatoes, biscuits. There was a choice of butter or fig preserves to put on the biscuits. I've never been fond of fig preserves so I opted for the butter. There were also home grown peppers such as the cayenne, jalapeno, birds eye and Serrano. I like the jalapeno and birds eye.Did more work on the case of Apple IIe #1. A bit of Krud Kutter, a small piece of 220 grit zirconium paper and lots of elbow grease I got most of the discoloration removed. The photos below show the difference. The color change is most apparent in the space between the keyboard and the Apple emblem. Before:After:
Hi Bill! I have been keeping the morning greetings lively with tidbits of historical info on common phrases. I do it not to compete with you, but because i am just an early riser!
Pouring rain and cooler here, the A/c is now cycling instead of steady on.
Well, the MRI was well, an MRI,, in the OLD claustrophobic machine tunnel. Had I had to gone in any further, they woudl have had a massive panic attack on their hands. SInce my hiop was the mark, my head BARELY remained outside. That and the fact that due to the apnea, I cannot breathe well on my back, it is frustrating 15 minutes of torture to me! The Open MRI machine was all booked up, so they bumoped me to the old closed machine. They say it is "faster" thatn the open machine, but I think only by about 5 mins. 15 mins of torture is no fun. I get claustrophobic in big elevators and wish I didn't have to use them, but the 3 steps up to the trailer are challenge enough! Anything smaller than an elevator raises my BP and anxiety level fiercely. Reemember I go grocery shopping in the early Am to avoid the crowds of people that interfere with my "sanity".
MOH had client day for half the day.
Dinner was BBQ chicken, pot salad adn zucchini/yellow squash for me and broccoli for MOh {who hates Broccoli}.
SInce I am elegible for help from the agency MOH works for as boht a mentally and physically handicapped person, I may just see what assistance they can give me while MOH is working. Free up MOH from helping me. Dunno. MOH would obviously NOT be assigned to me or to the Inlaws should they get services as well {we are trying to talk them into it} IF I have to do somehting LIke get a new replacement hip, I WILL use the services to help out.
Well, SUze Orman, my fave "girlfriend" will be on soon. SHe calls everyone "girlfriend" and "boyfriend" on her show. SO should get going have some dishes to clear up before her show.

If I live down in those parts, you can very well know I would be in Atlanta right now! Some day before I get too old, I hope to go to the National NMRA Convention. Just couldn't swing it this year.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
