Good morning - I took the day off, even though it costs me a vacation day. SWMBO is visiting her brother in Maine this weekend, so it's kind of a Personal Sanity day for me. Watch the Tour de France and lay some track. Now that's a quality weekend.
Garry, in Massachusetts we get our cars inspected once a year. I'm not sure if it really accomplishes very much. It used to be twice a year, in May and October, which oddly are NOT six months apart as one would think. When they put emission in, the inspections take longer, so they spread them out over the whole year and made them annual. I remember reading a study somewhere comparing states with safety inspections with those without safety inspections, which found that there was no appreciable difference in accident rates between the inspection and non-inspection states. In the old days, I remember one inspection which consisted of a teenage kid saying "Does your horn work and stuff?" That was it. Twenty dollars and here's your sticker.
And while you're getting your sticker across the street, eat hearty. Looks like it's on me.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Morning All,
Currently 61 with an expected high of 98. Was a hot one yesterday, and a few really quick thunder storms. Rained like crazy for about 10 minutes, then stopped, an hour or two later same thing. We had some flash flood warnings, but nothing serious for me.
Heard some fireworks in the evening, but not like usual, maybe because of the weather there was not a lot.
I guess one of my best vehicle was my 93 Chevy Suburban. I pulled 3 different travel trailers with it over the years, even towed one from Nevada to Florida and back. It had 286,000 miles on it when it finally died in 2009. Only major repair was a new fuel pump.
W**k today, so no layout w**k I guess. After walking around the store for 8 hours, I am pretty tired when I get home, and do not feel like standing much.
Prayers to all in need.

Morning guys,
Nothing planned for today as it has been raining all night and morning, quite heavy at times this morning also. Not really much planned for weekend either as it looks like it will be somewhat wet. We are going to the wife's mothers for a bbq on Sunday afternoon. Well I have to get to some cleaning and then get down to the railroad and workbench this afternoon.
Good Morning!!I think...we are getting t'underboomered on with heaping barrels of rain be falling on our'n heads...this oughta be fun... I'm going to try to get some more work done in that Lair of Doom...we ended up getting another big 25 cubic yard bin to throw 'stuff' in..seems a lot of 'stuff' keeps showing up...I just hope there is no reverse black hole in there Anyhoooo...have a good one!!

Good......... morning? I guess?Found out my dad had a 1/48 B-17G kit in his closet. He started it several years back before he met my mom, and it sat in the closet ever since. I then pulled it out and started on it. It will be decorated for the ill-fated "Chow Hound". Night everyone.

Evenin' folks,
Janie, just a refill on the decaf while I sit here and listen to the firecrackers going off a street over from here...
Jeffrey, those big ones are fun until one goes wrong and burns down somebodies house! I gave up on the, what up here is illegal, bottle rockets or larger stuff after a next door neighbor who used to go over the border and buy hundreds of them had us all go out to a field nearby to set them off. At the time my oldest was just about 4 years old. My wife was not happy with going out to set off illegal explosives but came along with the two kids. Charlie (the neighbor) had set off quite a few when one of them left the bottle wrong and headed right toward my wife and my oldest boy. Missed the kid by a couple inches and exploded about 20 feet behind where he was! Lets just say my wife loaded all of us into the Bug and headed home a minute or so later. Somehow the whole thing was my personal fault and came back in most all arguments for the rest of her life...
Went out to my son's house tonight for supper, had a nice steak dinner, and played with the granddaughters for a couple hours. They bought the girls a new pool which my son put up early today in the back yard. The girls threw the beach ball, and then grandpa had to go get it and toss it back to them... We did have a lot of fun. After dinner one of their Uncles had brought a bunch of sparklers for the family to light outside. Most everyone went outside to have fun. I stayed in with a couple others and chatted. Just a few minutes later they all came back inside with Granddaughter #2 screaming bloody murder. Her uncle gave her a sparkler with strict instructions not to touch the lit end. He lit it for her and of course since anything you tell her not to do she immediately does just to "Show you" she doesn't like being told not to do something. She sticks her thumb on the hot end of the sparkler and immediately had what we call in Scouts, "A Discovery Experience". #2 got bandaged up and didn't want to talk about it!!! Uncle was very upset he had done such a horrible thing to his little niece. Mom, Dad and Grandpa just figured she just might actually learn something. Time will tell... Thumb will heal, but hopefully she will remember it.
Near the end of my teaching career there was a disciplinary method based on "Natural Consequences". If you do this, that happens, period! Actually worked well most of the time. The trick is you don't "Save" the kid from the consequences... Source of method? Native American Culture for one.
Oh, on the way home tonight I turned onto the main East/West street downtown and immediately heard a blaring fire engine roaring down the side street. It turned and came up behind me, I pulled off in a parking area and then followed the truck for a couple blocks.... Did I mention about "Natural Consequences......"? Probably a lot of those calls tonight!
Other than make a potato salad to take to the party tonight, I did nothing today... Hope you all have a great night!

We'll get there sooner or later!
It was quiet here all day. I used the time to get a good amount of rest. Then about 8:40pm all heck broke loose as some of the neighbors let loose with the fireworks. They're setting off aome kind of big areal shells that are shaking my trailer. I'm doing my best to ignore it. I have very little to do with fireworks myself. To me they're just a waste of money. Today I took the time to label the disk drives of the Apple so they show the proper slot and drive designation and also what model they are. Apple drives are connected to one controller on slot six and the Franklin drives are connected to another controller on slot five. No work on the layout today.Time for me to call it a night so I'll see y'all tomorrow.

Hey everyone! Happy Independence Day.
Been busy the past few days with work and some other things around the house. Also didn't feel my best yesterday. Was working outside in the humidity and heat. Bet I came close to getting heat exhaustion. Had it before. Not fun. Still have a slight headache, but it is a lot better today than it was yesterday. Just trying to stay cool.
Been working on the P-40B Warhawk, and it is now done! With the rate I'm going, I may consider getting a B-17 Flying Fortress and seeing how well I do with that! However, I don't think I will tackle that kind of project until I get a little more experience.
Here is a parade for the 4th!

Good Morning!
A Happy 4th to all our friends in the U.S. of A.!
I'm off on a week of holidays with just a bunch of house chores to do. I just finished a little cement patch on some holes in the garage floor. Salt and frost causes the surface to deteriorate. Naturally I ran out of the patching stuff so back to the local LBM store.
Speaking of being off, Oct. 31 is my official last day of work and I will then be RETIRED! The company I work for made me an offer I couldn't refuse to go away so after 35 years I guess I will. I will be 66 just 3 days later so I suppose I've had a good run at it. They don't have any laws here where a company can fire you just because they don't like the way you look. If there isn't cause then they have to pay you to go away.
Nothing new on the layout front. I haven't done a thing down there for several weeks. One reason being that it is cold down there! With the AC on it gets cold after time as in 64F.
Speaking of cars that last, I've owned samples of all domestic makes. I had an '88 Chrysler LeBaron that lasted 12 years and 130,000 miles with few problems. I did have to replace the transmission but that was my fault. I basically cooked it towing a large trailer. I've had great luck with Volvos. I had a 2000 that I drove for 11 years until a truck hit it and it was written off. I expected it to last at least another 3 or 4 years as it was in great shape until then. The 2010 I have now has been trouble free.
Well time I did something else on the list so see you later.
CN Charlie
Happy 4th of July! * * * * * *
Ulrich .... Thanks for the greetings. * * *
Barry ... You too!
Of course, all nationalities are welcome to participate in the fun!
Galaxy .... Thanks for the safety warnings. I think it is the IRS bosses who are taking the Fifth instead of celebrating the Fourth! .... (sssshhhhh ....... Don't tell Vinnie I said that!)
Jerry .... Thanks for getting back with the info about the hamburger place. I see Casey on the map. Not sure if we'll be headed up eastern IL or not. We might have to stop in Evansville on the way. If so that might work. Otherwise, we'll be on mostly the Interstate through Paducah, Marion, Champaign, etc.
Todd .... I noticed you don't want Inch to see your Asian restaurant. I bet you don't want him to report back to the Diner about your behavior.....
Mr. B .... How often are required to have your vehicle inspected? We don't have to do that here.
V8 Dennis .... I bet it feels good having the carpet clean again.
As I have said, 2 of our grandkids are here. We took them to Murray for dinner. Murray is a college town on the other side of Land Between the Lakes for here. On the way back we watched fireworks at Ken-Lake State Park. They do the fireworks on the lake, and you can see it from the bridge. We parked on the causeway which approaches the bridge and had a great view. Parking is normally not allowed, but both sides of the causeway was filled with vehicles as people watched fireworks.
Todd will be glad to know the dinner in Murray was at an Asian restaurant. The girls used their chop sticks.
Regarding vehicles, I have had mostly GM products. The most dependable is the Chevy truck I have now. It has had no problems at all. We got it new in 2002. Shelley's 2004 Caddy has never had a mechanical problem but some of its electrical and electronics have required expensive work. My worst was a 1987 Buick that needed its v-6 engine replaced. Second worst was a Ford needing a transmission replaced. Shelley is the one who has owned foreign cars from time to time. She has had good luck with German cars (Audi and BMW). For I while, she had an infiniti, and I hated driving it because, I never could find a comfirtable seat adjustment. My worst car accident was when I was driving one of her Audi's. A drunk driver came from nowhere and hit my drivers door at 50 mph. I think her car saved my life, but I never fully recovered from back injuries in spite of surgeries to repair it.
Have a great 4th, everybody!
Mornin' everyone!
Happy 4th. of July to everyone Stateside this morning! And to all our friends and neighbors around the world as well! Zoe, to celebrate I'll have a Mexican omelet (yep need a bottle of xxx hot sauce), some bacon, and a double order of Sour Dough Toast to be all washed down with a huge cup of dark roast coffee in my R&GV RR mug please. Oh a bottle of Tums might be nice too.
Just got a call from my son telling me the party is at his house and to be gthere by 4:30 with a potato salad.... I told him to reserve a spot close enough to his outside outlet for me to steal a charge for the PiP as payment for the potato salad.
Currently 81°F outside with a high around 85°F later today (about the time I get out to my son's house where they do not have much in the way of air conditioning....) with some light shows and rain to augment the fireworks tonight. There was a fireworks show going on here in Geneva last night. I couldn't see anything, but sure could hear it. Probably down at the lake as my view of that is blocked by the trees up here on the hill.
Best get myself moving. I have a potato salad to make.....
[edit] We have had our 4th. of July excitement here in my neighborhood already today. I no sooner hit send when a Fire Truck and a dozen or so trucks and cars with the Blue lights all showed up right across the street from my house where an elderly lady lives.... This was followed by an ambulance all the way from the next county! I guess all the local ones where on doughnut break. After about 15 minutes or so the ambulance crew reappeared with the lady on the stretcher and put her into the ambulance. She appeared to be awake so I guess that is good news. She has been crippled for several years and I bet she fell....
Later!

We have met the enemy, and he is us............ (Pogo)
Hey Gang!
Gonna chill out today, relax and stay in the A/C today, cuz hot and muggy is the name of the game outside today. Besides, I didn't get up til after 10 this morning. SWMBO turned off the alarm clock last night, and the normally noisy cats let us sleep til then! Tomorrow I will pay for this,,,,gotta get up at the crack of dawn to get up on the roof and clean the gutters. Small Maple trees are growing in them!
Speaking of cars, the 99 Olds Alero got a new set of tires, and turned 200,000 miles last week. Rides well, runs well and still looks good. So I guess it will stay around another 40-50,000 miles.
On the Job front, a local large independent shop sent me an email through Linkdin yesterday, asking if I was willing to revisit working for them. Of course I responded, should hear back from them tomorrow. We will see where this goes!
Well,,it 11 o'clock now,,,better go get a shower! Have a happy and safe 4th everyone,,,see ya later!
Karl
NCE über alles!
Good morning and Happy Fourth! Even those outside of the USA are free to celebrate with us. The tradition is grilling and drinking beer. I may do a steak, or I may get some ground lamb and do lamburgers again. We had those a couple of weeks back, and they were quite tasty indeed.
I wish I could get a car to last as long as you guys do. I've got a 2006 Saturn and it's falling apart. I thought about replacing it when it needed its previous $1000+ repair job, but decided to do that job. This time, it's $900 for some foolish emissions thing. The car runs fine, but the dreaded Check Engine light is on, and it won't pass the September inspection like that. The suspension is shot, and I'm losing coolant somewhere, too. I'm thinking of trading it in come September and getting a Toyota to last the rest of my life. Or, I may take my daughter's Toyota and give her the new one, after I retire and don't need to drive to work anymore.
90s today, and getting sticky inside now, too. Time to turn on the train room AC.
Morning All.
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY
Currently it is 70 with an expected high of 100, with the possibility of a thunderstorm in the afternoon. Typically our thunder storms do not bring too much rain, just a lot of lightning which causes brush fires.
I was able to get everything accomplished yesterday that I wanted, now back to w**k.
Good Morning!!!
Coffee and a breakfast pile please. Thanks.
20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 83.
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!!
Gas went down to $3.42 yesterday.
Inch- Get hold of me and we’ll work something out. Don’t let ‘em fool ya, there’s plenty other places I eat.
Welp, guess I’ll put in a few hours at the apartment this morning, then rest up a bit for the big 4th of July shindig my SIL puts on every year this evening bout oh…..5ish. Maybe 6. The thing starts at 2 with their villages fireworks at dusk, but I’m just not into that long of a party. Ya I know, Mr Stick in the Mud. At least it won’t be too hot this year as they have no shade. Band should be good though. They got Still Kickin’, a very popular local country band. They are calling it quits this year, a couple of them decided to focus on new and young families and the bands’ shhhheh-joool doesn’t allow for that. Lead singer is from Williamsville,or is it Sherman? Either way she did go to school here and happens to be dating my friend with the restaurant/apartments’…youngest son. So I’ll probably see him there.
Oh for crying out loud! We need to Furminate the dog….gee whiz Missy do you have any hair left?!

Good morning. It's 72° with 79% humidity. The high will be 92°.Nothing planned for today. The junk Apple IIe I ordered for parts is in Alexandria this morning. It should be here tomorrow.
Good MorningWe are back in stick and mug territory again..couple of nice big ol' t'underbumpers came through here and left us with a great big barrel full of humidity...77F felling like 95F out right now...going up to 84F feeling like unto 100F later on...sighCouple of committee meetings to go to later on then off for the weekend...Have a good one!!
Happy Independence Day!!
WARNING:
Don't go forth on the Fourth with a fifth, or you may not go forth on the fifth!
Stay safe and leave fireworks to the professionals!
BBQ outings on the Fourth may become addicting!!!
Happy 4th everyone!!!!! Not much going on today, I have to leave for work later in the afternoon. It's been busy at work and I am loosing one of my best guys because he found a job in the HVAC industry, I wish him the best of luck!! Maybe a beer or two today and some chicken on the grill. It's gonna be another hot and humid day on the east coast. I plan on finishing the wiring to my layout and adding some lighting to it over the weekend.
Have a wonderful 4th!!!!!!

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!
I will lite the prayer candles at 9 AM for those in need...
Let your {One's} hair down:
Meaning:
Behave in a free or uninhibited manner
The short origin:
Back in the Napoleonic days, the nobility of Paris were highly condemned if they appeared in public without a hairdo that was very elaborate. This meant hours of work and many hairpins. It was only when they were home that they could take all those pins out and 'relax'. When the pins came out, the hair 'fell down'. Thus, letting your hair down soon became a phrase to represent being relaxed
The other version:
Letting one's hair down was a commonplace part of women's daily activities in the 17th century. The hair was normally pinned up and was let down for brushing or washing. The term used for this at the time was dishevelling. Anyone who is unkempt and generally untidy might now be described as dishevelled, but then it applied specifically to hair which was unpinned. The first reference I can find which refers specifically to this is John Cotgrave's, The English treasury of wit and language, 1655:
" Descheveler, to discheuell; to pull the haire about the eares."
tcwright973I wouldn't agree with that at all. I owned 3 of them and never had any problems but with one exception. The transmission needed rebuilt at around 36,000 miles on te 2nd one. It was the failure of a valve. I would have kept getting them, but every model year was bigger than the previous one. Couldn't get the last one in the garage without folding in the side mirrors. A real pain. But other than that, I liked them.
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY
Evenin' folks!
Janie, may I get a refill on my decaf? Thank you Ma'am....
Managed to get quite a bit done today, I guess. Mowed the lawn (taking several breaks to cool down inside the house), went grocery shopping where with several specials at the store I have now accumulated 70¢ off my next fill up of the leftovers of dead dinosaurs for the PiP. I looked again at some of the items (there are several that I use on the list) and I may stop back over on Friday and buy enough more to get another 30¢ off. Almost wish the PiP held more than 10 gallons of the gunk.... But not quite. LOL I also bought a new shovel and a 100' tape measure. Moved 6 wheelbarrows full of dirt and raked most of it out where the hedge was removed. Hope to have the area completed by the end of the weekend.
I decided to see what a local contractor would charge me to install the new fence. If the cost is about the same as it would be for after renting the equipment needed to do it, I probably will have them do it.
Jeffrey and Tom, I have owned 5 Chrysler products over the years. 2 were great vehicles and 3 were, ah, not so great.... In terms of repairs and spending time in the shop. A lot of the repairs were under warranty, but they seemed to want to suddenly have a lot of problems about the time the warranty was up...... Since I switched brands, I have had no problems whatsoever! (knocks on wood...)
I haven't heard if my son is planning anything this year for the 4th. or not.... They may be on vacation somewhere. doesn't look look like I will go to Boy Scout Camp tomorrow as they had rain again today... I would doubt the road will be passable yet for me to get into the campsite to work.
Hope you all remembered to buy a 5th. on the 3rd. to celebrate the 4th.! Have a great one..
jeffrey-wimberlyThat had to be one of the WORST vehicles Chrysler ever cranked out.
