Yoohoo! Anybody here?

Kind of empty in here, lately! Lots of MIA´s. I wonder where they are?

Good Morning!

I went on a trip up north yesterday, to take a look at a fire truck. The beast turned out to be exactly what we are looking for, is in good order and the price seems to be right. It´s got a 375 cu. air-cooled, direct-injection Diesel engine, with not much hp, but lots of torque. It has a 5-speed manual gear box, but you only need 2 of the speeds, plus reverse, of course Smile, Wink & Grin I have not driven a beast like this one for at least 35 years, so the test drive was a real trial, not for the truck, but for me Laugh

That´s me behind the wheel ...

Now I need to "persuade" my colleagues to agree to the deal and get our finance manager to cash out the required funds. I can already picture me driving it on a medieval market place, the blue lights flashing... It´ll be fun!

Have a good one!

Garry, When I was searching for help on rapido cars, I noticed you said you had some. What radii are you using, and did you just use #5s, or go to long-shanks and/or scale heads?

Vincent ....... On Rapido passenger cars, I have 3 of them coupled together in one passenger train with other cars. I have a Kadee #5 at one end of the Rapidos, and I have a Kadee long shank at the other end. This solved a p[roblem which was the cars would derail while being pushed through an S-curve. The diaphragms rubbed together, and the cars would derail. (The cars were running fine while being pulled with a #5 at bothe ends.) My curves are either 30" or 32" on the main line.

Johnboy ... Glad to hear about your grandson. Feel free to tell much more. .... Sounds like you are making progress on the layout.

Our Cincinnati grand daughters are home now. We met their Mom and Dad in Louisville instead of half way (Elizabethtown). .... We drove 200 miles each way to and from Louisville. Son and DIL drove only 100 miles each way from Cincinnati to Louyisville. .... Once again, Grandpa and Grandma do most of the driving.

Everybody ... Good to see all of you!

Not much happened happened today. I got IIe #2 up and running with a new power supply, IIe #3 has a good rebuilt power supply. I played another game of Starfleet1. After two games I'm doing rather well. I've only come up against a few cloaked ships though. They can hit from anywhere and are very hard to target. I did defeat them though and even captured one and towed it to the nearest starbase. Now that I'm feeling good about it I'll probably get my clock cleaned in the next game and get my butt handed to me on a platter made from part of the Galactica. My father is having a room in his home cleared for me. Getting in and out of my trailer on one leg would be hard to say the least and until I get a prosthesis and learn how to use it I'll be needing a place to stay. Other family members homes are out because they have steps/stairs and weren't laid out with the handicapped in mind.

Well it's getting late and it's past time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Evenin' folks!

Janie just a cup of decaf for me right now.  Just want to unwind a bit before I "Hit the Hay".

Finished mowing the lawn today, then drove over to a small Green House place to see what they might have left for annuals.  i was hoping for petunias to plant in the rock garden in the front yard.  They were sold out of petunias and almost all the annuals, but had a small flower called Millions Plant that looks like a small petunia in round pots.  Only had 4 of them left.  The round pots were all 5 for $5 so I found another round pot with a white flower and got 5.  Planted them late this afternoon.  They do make the rock garden look a bit more finished.  Next year I will plant strawberries in there.  I also moved a half dozen more wheelbarrows full of topsoil to the 3rd. Raised Garden out back.  Opened up the last bag of "Moo Poo" ™ and spread that out.  The box is now half full.  By Monday I hope to get it finished.

Been thinking I haven't seen Ken in here in a while.  Anyone heard for him?  Hope he is OK!

Afternoon guys

Well now that I replaced the couplers on the Rapido cars to Kadee #5s, they don't work very well on the club layout.. Most notably on my lounge car. When I got home pulled the stock plastic scale-head couplers out and compared them to the #5. They are just a touch longer, but that might be enough. I grabbed the only set of scale-head kadees and they are just a touch longer (the back of the coupler face is a little thinner) as well. I also looked at the diaphragms and noticed they were stuck all the way out or wouldn't go back in. I took the car apart and cleaned out a lot of flash from the diaphragm and it moves around now. It also could be that the #5s are hitting the bottoms of the diaphragms... So for now 1 car has scale kadees, 2 have the stock couplers (again), the rest (including the lounge) have #5s. I'll find out on Tuesday what worked. Hopefully by then, my Kato F40PH will be here.

Garry, When I was searching for help on rapido cars, I noticed you said you had some. What radii are you using, and did you just use #5s, or go to long-shanks and/or scale heads?

Mr. B & Galaxy, happy belated anniversary

Johnboy, It's just I've kinda gotten a girlfriend now. I say kinda because she is crazy for me, but It's a bit early for me to feel the same...

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Well I got the new Apple IIe power supply this morning. It's now installed and has been tested in use and passed. So of the three Apple IIe's I'm working on #1 is complete and is in service. #2 just got a new power supply and still needs a CP/M card. #3 just got a rebuilt power supply and a set of RAM chips for 64k, a processor and a ROM chip. It just passed a power-on test and an initial drive control test using the drive controller from #2. It still needs an 80 column/64k RAM expander card, a CP/M card, a Disk II controller card and two A2M0003 (20-pin) Disk II disk drives. Also need a 20-pin Disk II drive cable. I've been looking for it on Ebay but it's like looking for hens teeth. I'll probably have to buy a junk drive and strip the cable from it.

Good morning!  A bit cloudy here in Massachusetts, with comfortably cool temperatures.

Thanks to all for the anniversary greetings.  As predicted, we had a low-key evening watching our recording of the Tour de France from earlier in the day.  I made a big garden salad topped with grilled sirloin tips.  Delicious, low carbs and you don't feel stuffed afterwards.  I've left the recipe in the kitchen at the Diner.

Jeffrey, I've found that the USPS tracking web site can be days behind the actual progress of the package.  I've had the package in my hand while USPS was saying it had just left the distribution center in California.  Better than the other way around, though.

Johnboy, we took a ski trip to Montana (Big Sky) a few years back, and we loved it.  We talked a lot with the locals riding the chairlifts, and I was surprised at the number of former airline pilots we met.  These are guys who have seen the whole country and much of the rest of the world, and they chose to live in Montana.  I think that says something.  Looking into it, though, we found it not particularly tax-friendly for retirees, which is what we plan to be soon.

Ah, I love Saturdays without an agenda.  Here it is 11 AM and I'm just getting my second cup of coffee...

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

 Morning All,

Currently it is 64 with an expected high of 92 under very sunny skies, humidity will be around 14% later on in the day.

I have some grocery shopping to do and then hopefully spend the better part of the day w**king on train stuff. I also need to figure why Adobe Flash player is not working. Whenever I try and watch a video, I get a message that says "you need to install the latest version of Flash Player". I go to the Adobe site, download Flash Player, get the "Flash Player is installed successfully" message, but cannot find the program, and still cannot watch videos, and get the same message. Very frustrating.

   Prayers to all in need.

Good morning. It's 72° with 75% humidity. The high will be 95°.

No plans for today. Woke up this morning feeling like I'd been under an elephant - as the mattress! Very sore and my joints are stiff. Looks like a movie watching day. According to USPS tracking the power supply for the other Apple IIe should have been here yesterday. But it didn't show up. Maybe today. I'm waiting for the tracking site to be updated. Yesterday I started up the old Starflett1 game and worked my way through a mission as the commander of the UGAS Galactica. Won too with an overall efficiency rating of 87.2%. I found three star bases I could resupply at and destroyed seventeen enemy vessels in thirteen days. Hadn't played that in over ten years. I only had to look up one little thing in the manual. How to get damage control to repair a short circuit in the bowling alley and repair the food dispensers before the ship became flooded with vanilla pudding. Boy, major decisions there! I might start up another mission today.

Morning Coffee in the diner..

GOOD SATURDAY MORNING!!!

Today is Saturday, July 13th, 2013!!!

I will light the prayer candles at 9 am for those in need...

MAKE IT A GREAT day!!

As Per RAY's request: Hit the Hay:

Meaning:

Go to bed

Origin:

This isn't really an old phrase, it's only about a century old.

The term hay was used in the USA to mean bed since the early 20th century; for example, from People You Know, by the American author George Ade, 1902:

"After Dinner he smoked one Perfecto and then, when he had put in a frolicsome Hour or so with the North American Review, he crawled into the Hay at 9.30 P.M."

In 1902, mattresses were often sacks {big bags} stuffed with straw or hay (hence the similar phrase 'hit the sack').

The phrase 'hit the hay' seems to have originated in the US sports scene. The Oakland Tribune, July 1903, reported this:

"'Sam' Berger, the Olympic heavyweight ... was sleepy and he announced that 'he was going to hit the hay.'"

In 1905, Paxton Sport USA included this:

[the baseball player] "has a language of his own. Going to bed for him is to 'hit the hay.'"

Geeked

-G .

Just my thoughts, ideas, opinions and experiences. Others may vary.

 HO and N Scale.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Whistling

I too want to wish those (all) Anniversary Kids a very happy Anniversary and many more.  My wife and I will hit the big 40 this November.

Chloe, you cutie you, how about a double RBF. and a couple of chocolate chip cookies, Please and thanks.

Well I finally got some time in the train room today.  Spent most of the afternoon laying plaster cloth on the "cut" in the foothills before the river and waterfall leading to Last Mountain, I would say it is about 90% done.

This evening I pulled up the painters tape off the tracks and ran a couple of trains through it to check for clearances and all is well so far. I have room for the gypsum over the plaster so that's great.

Now to find more time to finish this area.

Glad to see Jerry stopping in again, and Big J., those background buildings look greeaat.

We still haven't made it out to the campground this year other than for about four hours one afternoon just to de-winterize it and get it ready for use.  Just too many things getting in the way this year.  Each year we say it is going to get better, but, it just seems to get worse.  maybe next year.   ya know -- Next year country.

Jeff, sorry to hear about the foot.  Prayers that it will be for the best and you will really start feeling better.

Ulrich, look after yourself those Polite-tics can sure be draining on a person.  Petra needs you more than Germany does.

Packer,  have you given up on the romantic side of your life ? I always enjoyed hearing about the young ladies that wanted a ride in your Mustang.

Garry. I'm sure enjoying my little Grandson, I know you'll be having a great time with all your G-kids this summer.  They will like Grampa's place on the lake.

Rob,  How's the train  room coming along, we haven't heard in awhile. Is that new little tractor getting all the jobs done that you had hoped for ?

Well, I am back to work for the week-end so I had better hit the hay.

BTW, My Son who just finished Grad School has been offered a job in Billings Montana.  He is pondering this very seriously. Similar money to what he was offered in Chi-town but the cost of living is much less in Billings. ------- We will see.   He would only be about a nine hour drive from us. That would be great.

Night all and sweet rail dreams.

Johnboy out.............................and off to ZZZZzzzzland

from Saskatchewan, in the Great White North..

We have met the enemy,  and he is us............ (Pogo)

Good evening ....

Happy anniversary to the "Beasley's" and to the "Galaxy's" ....... Hope it was great!

Curt .... I like the photos of PRR electric locomotives on display.

Spent the day busy with grandkids. This evening was final evening of VBS at the church for the kids. They go home tomorrow. That means we drive half way to Cincinnati to meet their Dad and Mom (our son and DIL) who will be driving from there. We'll have lunch possibly in Elizabethtown, and return home. It's been an enjoyable time. There will be more soon because their Mom and Dad each work, and the girls have no school in the summer.

Not much layout progress with so much non-model-railroad stuff.

Cheers!

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I'll have a hot cup of decaf to help me relax.  Thank you Ma'am.

Went out to camp this afternoon...  The storm that came through camp Wednesday took out a bunch of computer equipment in camp, incliuding some of the wi-fi stuff.  The ranger got everything back up and running yesterday.  They got a lightning hit near the new "Eagle Lodge" at camp where the Sci-Tec camp meets and where the wi-fi stuff is.  Even wiped out an old computer down at the lake in the Villages water pump house.  The dining hall where the Sound Equipment is only had a couple things get hit with a surge...  Of course one was the brand new Yamaha Mixer I just donated! Grumpy  Luckily it was only one channel that got fried.  Since I got a larger mixer than was needed, I had two extra channels left.  I was able to just move the oinput from the dead mic to a working channel and they are back in business.  I am waiting to find out if the mixer can be repaired on warranty or whether I will be donating the repairs as well...

Finished half the lawn this afternoon and also finished the raised bed with the boulder in the front yard as well.  Tomorrow I will drive over to a greenhouse to see if they might have some petunias left I could plant in the little garden for this year.  Next year it will be planted with strawberries!  Moved some more topsoil tonight.  Hope to get the 3rd. garden bed filled tomorrow as well as the rest of the lawn done (do the wash, clean some house, get some division stuff accomplished, etc., etc., etc).

I sure would love to find some time to work on the trains downstairs!

I guess it is about time to hit the hay...  So Galaxy, what is the history of "Hit the Hay"?

Later!

Evening All,

Made hamburgers for supper and drinking coffee now.

Tomorrow I am going to a train show in Deland then probably on to the train club. I have been installing cylindrical rare earth magnets as uncouplers. I am putting 4 on each track (2 per side with a tie in between them) so it is not so critical to line them up with the couplers.

When I got up this morning I found MOH's 55 gall fish tank draining on the dining room floor. The tank developed a leak on a bottom seamGrumpy. Thank goodness we have tile on the floor and not wood or carpet.

My daughter told us her adoption of the 2 boys should be finalized within 30 days.

Galaxy- Happy Anniversary to you and YOH.

Jeff- I am really sorry to hear about your foot. What ever you decide I will say prayers for your health.

Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.

Got the grass cut. Now I feel like I've been run over by the tractor, several times. The grass was high and took about six hours to cut. I worked a lunch of beef stew and cornbread in there somewhere. Now I'm sore and stiff and I'm sure I'll be somewhat antisocial for a few days.

Jeff, have you tried to see if you could get windows 7 on the computer you have? I tried windows 8 and didn't care for it. IMO, Windows 7 is like XP, but with some better features.

That's an idea but seeing as I don't have Windows 7 it's just an idea. I'm not going to spend $100 or more to get it. If I stumble across it at a flea market or yard sale for a good price I'll grab it. That's how I found XP. An unopened upgrade pack for $10.

Afternoon guys

Been mowing the lawn. I think the tractor mower is starting to go out. It sputters a lot now, usually when turning to the right; it creaks and groans all over the place, the blade actuating lever only turns the blades on, but when turned off the blades continue to spin until the mower is shut-off. It's a craftsman, I think it's around 14-17 years old. I remember I was in middle school when my dad got it. Then again, it's been used for more that cutting grass. It's been used to try to pull stumps (exercise in futility), push cars around and up the steep driveway into the garage, been used to teach me, my brother, and my sister how to drive and some other things... It might just need a tune-up or something.

As far as trains are concerned, I got my parents to "forward" me some money to buy an engine to go with my Amtrak cars. I got a Kato F40PH in phase III. This happened to be the last one I could find that wasn't on e-stupid or had ditch lights (too new for me). It happens to be a Kobo shops one, which means I don't have to install the fiddly bits and it comes with a Loksound decoder. So my Amtrak train is an F40PH pulling 3 sleepers, a lounge, 2 coaches, and an amfleet. I'm trying to find a rapido baggae car in Ph. III as well.

Spell check, for some reason, my IE has it. It didn't have it before my father removed Firefox. I wonder if something happened there.

Jeff, have you tried to see if you could get windows 7 on the computer you have? I tried windows 8 and didn't care for it. IMO, Windows 7 is like XP, but with some better features.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

As I siad, celebration will be low key.

Yes, us too.  I've had a long day.  She's doing some dietary thing, so she didn't even want my Thai Curry Soup, which is one of her favorites.  So, we'll make our separate dinners and watch the Tour de France.  Appropriate, actually, as we were at one stage of Le Tour on our honeymoon.  That day, I was aware that Greg Lemond, the first American to win the Tour, was only a few seconds behind Bernard Hinault.  When I saw Lemond go by, I started counting.  By the time Hinault rode past us, I knew Lemond was ahead.  As it turned out, Lemond did take the lead that day and held it all the way to Paris, so it was an historic day on an historic Tour.

Another hour and a half and I'm done for the week.
