Galaxy- I missed itDunce. Why they called it "Jaywalking"?  LaughI know in Italy, they struck a compromise between motorists an pedestrians. if you crossed the street at a cross walk, those nutjob drivers lined up six wide in a four lane road with a scooter or two squeezed in there because by golly it'll fit, would come to a screeching halt even if it looked like you might step out onto the street. Like I said in the crosswalk. Anywhere else though, you were just another bump in the road.

Good morning. It's 71° with 92% humidity. The high will be 88°.

Looks like it could be a wet one today. Good thing I mowed the grass yesterday. Layout work, cleanup mostly is the plan for today. I'll probably watch a movie or two. I also have a C420 thbat requires attention. It has a nasty habit of shorting out.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and you guessed it, the Sunday Breakfast Buffet please, thanks.

Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 79. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Speaking of Breakfast Buffets, looks like that’s where we will be heading here in a few….minutes to an hour depending on A) when they open and B) when she gets moving. She is up yes, buuuuut…. She doesn’t get moving too awful quick on weekendsConfused. Probably leave around 8:30 I suppose.Huh?

Dennis- I know what you mean on the live coverage. It’s irritating when they just set there and say really nothing new... all...day. It makes me think they are taking advantage of a very bad situation for ratings or don’t want to lose the best seat at a tragedy. But I do realize there are constantly new people tuning in that don’t know what’s going on so they don't just sit ther wondering what's going on. Still, it’s irritating.

I’m bound and determined to get some Black Raspberries in this their final…Confused.. year so I will keep a close eye on them.

Is there ANY words where the I before e except after c rule fits??????!!!

Well as you can see by the weather forecast (pointing with one of those long wooden pool cue looking pointers with the big rubber tip to my posting on local weather board. Leaving people sitting there thinking….where’d that pointer come from and how’d he get it in here without us seeing it), that maaaaybe after 1pm I will be able to hit the old trainroom. Got all the yardw**k needed done yesterday, and the bush and shrubbery clean uping can be done before it rains today after breakfast or…Huh?just off and on here and there. It’s to the point where I could spend a couple three days straight on the yard and be done with it, but it doesn’t look so bad now that I can’t just leisurely do some here and there. I just have to make sure I don’t here and there it so little that it doesn’t get done.WhistlingLaugh

Problem is I’m re-thinking my railroad….again.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

I made a painted sign for the side of the powerhouse.  The building will be called Brownidge Station, a bit of a joke on Greenidge Station down the road on Seneca Lake based on the color of vegetation downwind of the place.  Actually the two most prominent colors right in the usual path of the emissions of the place are yellow and brown....  The model is to be owned by "Inmundus Electric Co."

So, get clean electric power from the dirty, filthy, unclean, impure electric company.

Morning coffee in the diner with friends...

GOOD SUNDAY MORNING!!!

Today is Sunday, June 9th, 2013!!!

I will light the prayer candles at Church service at 8 AM....for those in need....

MAKE IT  A GREAT DAY!!!

 JAYWALKER/WALKING:

MYTH MANY HAVE HEARD:

Jay Birds who ventured out of their rural forests and into the urban areas would often get confused. They often endangered their lives walking anywhere where they wanted, even into traffic.  "Sophisticated city people" laughed at their erratic behavior. So, now anyone who crosses the street in a reckless or illegal way is called a 'Jay Walker' {and sometimes even fined for doing so}

What REALLY happened:

According to Peter Norton, an assistant professor at the University of Virginia and the author of Fighting Traffic: The Dawn of the Motor Age in the American City, cars were considered rude and obnoxious in the early years of auto-mobiles. They were noted for taking  over and injuring pedestrians. Drivers were {and still are} charged with charges like with something like “technical manslaughter.” He says, “If you ask people today what a street is for, they will say cars,” says Norton. “That’s practically the opposite of what they would have said 100 years ago.” Norton explains that in the automobile’s earliest years, the principles of common law applied to crashes. In the case of a collision, the larger, heavier vehicle was deemed to be at fault. The responsibility for crashes always lay with the driver.

Norton explains that in the automobile’s earliest years, the principles of common law applied to crashes. In the case of a collision, the larger, heavier vehicle was deemed to be at fault. The responsibility for crashes always lay with the driver.

Public opinion was on the side of the pedestrian, as well. “There was a lot of anger in the early years,” says Norton. “A lot of resentment against cars for endangering streets.” Auto clubs and manufacturers realized they had a big image problem, Norton says, and they moved to aggressively change the way Americans thought about the cars, the streets, and the traffic. "They said, 'If we’re going to have a future for cars in the city, we have to change that. They’re being portrayed as Satan’s murdering machines.'"

The industry lobbied to change the law, promoting the adoption of traffic statutes to supplant common law. The statutes were designed to restrict pedestrian use of the street and give it's general use to cars. The idea of "jaywalking” – a concept that had not really existed prior to 1920 – was now enshrined in law.

The Invention of Jaywalking

 image: This 1910 illustration, first published by Keppler & Schwarzmann in 1909, shows an automobile driven by a chauffeur speeding down a road, surrounded by newspaper clippings with headlines about numerous traffic accidents regarding pedestrians  who were struck by automobiles, including one where a chauffeur was charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 13-year-old boy. {from the  Library of Congress}

It is now a NY state law that pedestrians have the right of way by stepping within ANY crosswalk, even those crosswalks in the middle of a street or a road, and drivers MUST yield to them if they are in the crosswalk. Serious consequences for the driver who hits or kills a pedestrian who is within the crosswalk!

DRIVE SAFELY!

Good Morning Gang!

I woke up this morning with a terrible pain in my back. Must have pulled a muscle down in that region. Crying

It was a long party board meeting yesterday. I was not home before 11pm. It´s not really nice to spend a full day tucked away in a musty conference room when it is such a beautiful day. The meeting went OK, as the one and only trouble maker we have in the board was not present. He is the type of politician you don´t want to elect - forum policies won´t allow me to tell you more and Vinnie would most likely ban me from the Diner ...

Next issue is how to raise the funds necessary for the upcoming campaign. So far, the "battle coffers" are  empty. It´ll be more than just a challenge to find the right sponsors.

Gary - it is nice to see there are folks who like my little layout idea Smile, Wink & Grin

Have a good one!

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a cup of decaf please.

I spent most of today looking for the box that had the rest of the pieces of the Design Preservation Power house kit in it.  Disappeared it has...  I could find every other kit I have bought but not THAT particular one!  Finally gave up and scanned the side of the powerhouse on my scanner.  Actually the raw piece of the siding would not have worked anyway. The model is to be owned by "Inmundus Electric Co."  Galaxy may look that up and report..... Whistling

I now have the sign glued to the building and a couple of repairs drying overnight.  I'll try to get some flattering photos once it is in its final resting place on the layout.  Hopefully tomorrow!

Did get outside during one of the few almost sunlit moments this afternoon to check on the raised bed gardens.  The carrots have poked through!  The broccoli, cauliflower and the peppers are growing like mad and everything looks good.

Guess it is time to call it a night.  Prayers for all in need!

I'm still baffled how my header melted a hole into an aluminum pipe (for my A/C) though...

That's not so hard to figure out. Steel (your header) melts at 2,400°F. It can stand far more heat than aluminum which melts at 1,220.666°F. Take it from a fire fighter. When it gets to that temp it melts so fast it almost runs like water.

Evening guys

Been out for a few. Been too busy as of late

Work has been bad the last few. With all the kids getting out of school and jacking their parent's cars and credit cards we have been stupid busy. Not to mention the vent for the grills has been busted the last few days. Let's just say it gets hard to breathe at times. I was going to bring my dad's military gas mask to see if that'd help, but he said that it'd just clog the filter.

Trainwise, I've been keeping busy. I've got the loads all put together for my 51 coal cars that I'm doing. I still have like a dozen other types, some of which I'm trying to get rid off (Ken, I still have that B&O one, and an Rock Island blue one) but I'm trying for a unit train, with MDC 3-bays filling in until I can get exactrail FMC 4000s... I've also started weathering the 4 cars a friend gave me to weather. 3 Intermountain 52'6"AAR flats (why did they make it, when P2K made a good one?) and a Red Caboose 42' flat. So far I just have the fade coat, trucks, and wheels done. I should be getting $60 for these 4, but I owe him 22 for a QSI upgrade chip I got from him (I think he's a tester for QSI).

The car started leaking coolant, again. From the same spot. I had enough of the stop-leak only working for 2 days and costing 6 bucks a bottle. I bought a timing cover to block gasket for $10 and after several hours (I think 6 or so) I had changed the timing cover (I used the one that came off my brother's car as it was cleaned up), the gasket, and re-did the fluids, and anything else I did with it. I'm still baffled how my header melted a hole into an aluminum pipe (for my A/C) though...

As for that burn, it's healed up almost all the way already. It's only been about 10 days.

I'll be trying to catch up.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

hello all, I've been trying to find some time to run trains but I'm not sure how much I'll get. Ulrich, I will start getting the track soon, I'll use an 18.75 easement and 15 R" tracks. the general response on trainboard(which I'll more than likely start posting on more as well as Nscale.org), Ulrich they really liked it!!! I will visit and update my NBR layout thread, for now I'm going to back off on this site.

Jeff  - I liked the short video. Those units can really pull I bet.

Thanks. So far they haven't failed to pull whatever load I put on them. I took them to a friends layout where they were put to the test. Their record is one hundred eighty four cars. It's not that they couldn't pull anymore. Perish the thought! That long line of cars kept derailing under it's own weight! These locos together weigh six pounds and that has a heck of an impact on the track. There were some weaknesses in my friends track work that became readily apparent. Part of the foundation of a ten foot long trestle began to crumble after repeated crossings and weak spots under several parts of the track were allowing the track to sag in places. He'll make repairs at which time we will run the quad around his layout again. I gave him some advice on filling the spaces beneath the weak areas with plaster as I did on my layout.

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of blueberry pancakes and a side order of bacon this morning, and bring me my R&GV RR mug filled to the brim with Seneca Lake blend dark roast coffee please...  Oh, and I think Karl wants coffee in his mug, not just the mug... Laugh

Hmmmm, Barry sent yesterdays dark and dull weather over to the East so that is what I have here today.  AGAIN!  We haven't seen the sun in three days here.  Not a shadow o be had in the Finger Lakes Region.  'tis 59°F outside with 87% humidity in the air.  Tomorrow will have a bit of sunshine then followed by 3 more days of rain.  Paul, we have lots of water here....Whistling

I might actually spend some time doing some stuff on the layout today.  Maybe...  Who knows!

Morning All,

Sitting here drinking coffee waiting on my uniforms in the dryer. May go with MOH grocery shopping after that.Crying The storms here had heavy rain, but generally not as bad as predicted. Now that the rain is through it is very humid. Next week highs are supposed to be 93 F and high humidity. It should be fun dealing with the people that leave their brains and common sense home when they come here on vacation.

I have to shake my head on the telephone/email story that people actually believe in this day and age that we are not being watched or monitored.

Jeff- Nice video. Great job on the ABBB consist.

Ulrich- I will sign your petition although only once as I am not from ChicagoWhistling.

Hope everyone has a good day and prayers for those in need.

  Morning All,

Currently 65 with an expected high of 99 under sunny skies. Reno broke a record yesterday, temp hit 100. Will not start to cool down until mid-week. Lots of HS graduations today here in Reno, Carson City and other surrounding areas, I hope people take precautions, and have lots of water.

I have a closing shift today, so I will miss a grand-nephews graduation. With the high heat, I am not too sorry I will be in an air conditioned store, and not out on some hot football field.

Jeff  - I liked the short video. Those units can really pull I bet.

Ulrich - Good luck getting those signatures.

Barry ..... Perhaps your forgot to remember to think of what to remember not to forget. Whistling

Ulrich ..... Good luck with the signatures. I grew up near Chicago, and in that city you had to have the right connections. Then you just tell them how many signatures you need and magically the signatures are there for you. ... Perhaps, we should send Vinnie to Germany, and he could make arrangements. Smile, Wink & Grin

The main item on my schedule today is to mow the grass. It's grown up pretty thick so it may take a while. If I feel like it later I'll work on the layout some more.

A load of buckshot, or conversely, a BUCK knife- a knife with a buckhorn handle during the American Frontier time, is placed before someone who has to deal the cards.  The dealer has a lot of responsibility on determining the game's style. If a cautious player doesn't want this responsibility, he's allowed to "pass the buck" to the next player who will be the dealer.

Definition:

pass the buck:

to blame someone or to make them responsible for a problem that you should deal with yourself
Usage notes: In the card game poker, the buck is an object passed to the person who wins in order to remind them that they must be the first person to give money for the prize in the next game.

Bushed:

When you are totally exhausted you are often  said to be "bushed."  The term, first used int eh 14th century,  came from the Dutch settlers for the 'wilderness', but modified in English to "bush."  Clearing away forests was hard work and they often proclaimed after carving out a trail that they were bushed (exhausted).  Today the word means to be exhausted from anything that makes one extremely tired

Definition:

1. bushed

2. tired of and baffled by trying to understand why George W. Bush is in the White House.

BEAT AROUND THE BUSH:

This comes from the old days of boar hunting in which the noblemen hired workers to walk through the woods beating the branches and making noises to get the animals to run towards the hunters.  Boars were dangerous animals with razor-sharp teeth . So the unarmed workers workers avoided the dense undergrowth where the boar might be and beat around the bushes, rather than going into them.  Thus, this evasive technique was coined "beating around the bush" and today represents anyone who avoids approaching anything directly or who avoids answering a direct question, to stall, or to waste time

Good Morning!

... and it is a good morning! We are still enjoying beautiful Spring weather - not a cloud in sight, a mild breeze keeping the temperature at an enjoyable 22° C during the day. Not for me to enjoy though, I have to chair a party board meeting today Grumpy

I spent the last two days out on the streets in my hometown, collecting support in my constituency. We need 2,000 signatures to be able to participate in the general election in September - I got only 15 in those two days Crying. I hope my colleagues are doing better. Like in all democracies, most people seem to be uninformed and not really interested, yet complain about the bad guys "up there". Things must probably turn a lot worse than they are now, before the start to move their backsides for a change.

Flip - keeping my fingers crossed for your cardiac tests! Angel

Y´ all have a good one!
