 gabeusmc:

Hey Jeffrey what do you model exactly, I mean any thought as to a protype, or do you just like to build whatever enters your head (I am a little like that). Do you have operating sessions. maybe you answered this along with all of thoose pics you posted a while back. Thanks.

Think I'll go operate the layout

My layout is protolance based on a defunct railroad (fallen flag) named the Louisiana and Arkansas (L&A). My premise is what might have happened had the L&A not bought KCS. Now as far as building things, I sometimes get the itch to have my shops go crazy and I scrape the pieces together and build a Frankenstein loco. The most recent was a GP9m built with parts from Front Range, Life-Like, Athearn, Walthers and one or two other companies. Another is a three unit consist of F units built from Athearn, Stewart, Kato and Life-Like parts. There;s even a Varney metal body shell thrown in for weight. I don't have operating sessions. My layout room is far too small for that. The most that can be in here comfortably is two people as the ;ayout takes up almost all the room.

So do you operate it bitself, like me. Ya know run some through freights and local freights?

***Jeffrey, you sure do capture beautiful loco pics with the headlines burning. Well done.

Thanks. It surprised me too. When I took that shot the only light in the room (besides the loco) came from the bedroom at the other end of the hall. I know the old Olympus is sensitive to light but cripes. I was trying for near full darkness. The layout and the train were black blobs with the exception of the headlight.

I was trying for something more like this:

Good Evening.

Thanks for the well wishes and prayers guys. I went up to the hospital yesterday and spent the night with him and his brother there. He slipped in and out of consciousness a few times as his heart would do its thing...they operated on him and he is doing a bit better although his heart rhythm is still out of sorts. Triple Bypass surgery is not fun....

I'm going to be doing the hospital in and out routine for the next little while with him I guess..his wife is here as well....Angel

Coffee in a  SOUTHERN  mug, please.

***Ray, superb clouds!YesCool

***Johnboy, I sure appreciate that. Would be happy to turn over the key to my sports car (excavator) and let you have at it. Seems every day I get up planning to get to work stumping and I just don't have the energy most days to do much at all. Frustrating. The floor is all laid out and ready to set. However, I've decided to add a support beam down in the dungeon (workshop) to handle the extra weight over the long term. At the moment, have no reliable truck to go get the beam with. The good news is it seems winter is over here, so there is no rush now.Hmm

***Jeffrey, you sure do capture beautiful loco pics with the headlines burning. Well done.

Healing thoughts to those in need.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

I'll have a (pant, pant) diet coke, Laura... yah just finnesed my run... A quick two mile sprint on the nearby golfcourse

finnished painting a Bachmann Gp40 into MINRail colars. It had broken down past all repair so i made it a dummy unit. Just painted it with a brush( I know, the "horrors") and it still needs some decals.

Hoople- it was just a sugestion, anyway you can be an engineer in the marines, its like any other branch but your expected to Know how to be Riflemen at all times. Actually in the Chosin Resivoir battle the Corp used cooks and drivers as riflemen. if you don't want to get killed serving your country i wouldn't suggest joining the Coast Gaurd? Coast Gaurd dangerous? Yes instead of the 99% training 1% combat in most branches, in the coast gaurd its 10% training 90% combat( or combat equivelent situation) they are always boarding ships and stopping smugglers, even the engineers are involed in that. Just food for thought.

See y'all

Afternoon all.

Still sick today. Gotta love strep, right?

Got an e-mail back from BLI already regarding my Big Boy. For whatever reason, it won't "chuff." The rest of the sounds work, it moves... it just won't make chuffing sounds. Which is a little annoying. They seem to think it's a broken chuff sensor and could mail it out to me to replace it- I should probably learn how to solder at some point. Might come in handy- seeing as I also need to re-wire my Marshall 4x12 guitar speaker cabinet at some point.

Needless to say I was a little surprised that BLI emailed me back before Athearn did- I sent an email to them on thursday asking about my Challenger- only one of the driver wheelsets moves. The front one is just dead weight, won't roll or drive. Then there's my spectrum 4-8-2, which has god knows what's wrong with it, and then my spectrum 2-8-0, which had it's female orange connector come off the PCB on the tender... I remember how much I hate those Bachmann orange plugs now!

Not to mention the Digitrax Zephyr's explosion... I forgot how much stuff there is I gotta fix!

RAY: I haven't thought about RIT. It's not in my area at all, although it may be in yours! I live over here in Seattle. I am looking mostly out of state though. Part of the reason I was looking at the Colorado School of Mines is because it is next to the Forney Museum (Big Boy #4005), the Colorado RR museum (D&RGW C-19 #346 and others), and it's pretty close to the Georgetown Loop RR. Lots of fun stuff in the area! I'll be visiting there in a month or so to see what the campus is like. Oh, and yes, I will be taking a look at the RR museums as well... Big Smile

LION: Did your brother enjoy working at the school of mines? It's one of my top picks. Also, I'd rather be an engineer for the air force- it's just personal preference. And to top it off I am a terrible swimmer. But, you are right that it's better than my flying!

GabeusMC: I don't want to be a Marine. Don't get me wrong, being a marine is an honorable thing- but I don't think I could do it. Being in combat isn't for me- I'm not willing to give it all up for my country. I'm sorry, but I'm not. I've only really considered joining any of the military branches as an engineer to work back here stateside one something because of all the good benefits and whatnot, not so I can go shoot at people.

Lee: I didn't know there was a Coast Guard academy. I'll have to look into it.

Sue: I can feel your pain. That's happened at most of the concerts I've been to. It wasn't really a problem when I saw AC/DC back in 2009... we had second balcony tickets, way in the back because they were bought last minute; but we could see everything and didn't have to stand up. Balcony/raised seating are a must a lot of the time- floor seating is nice but can be hard to see. Especially when you manage to get tickets behind a bunch of 6'6"+ bikers, like my dad and I did when we went to see Jason Bonham.

That's all for now.

Galaxy,  You said it well. we cannot change other people, we can only change our attitude towards them.

A very wise man once told me, " Don't confuse the two Ps "  They are Principle and Preference...

If it is a matter of Principle >> It really does matter.   If it is only Preference >> then several years from now it won't matter at all and you probably won't even remember it.   So be wise in the battles that you choose.

Ulrich,  Sincere congratulations to your Son, Christian  for his accomplishment  and also to you and Petra on being fine Parents.  Stick your chest out and be a proud Papa.   BTW,  love the job you have done  on the "Bluenose"

Ray, my Man,    I am impressed,  I named Jeff the "Spray Can Rembrandt"   I now officially proclaim you as the "Cloud Rembrandt"   Great job there,  and eagerly waiting to see the finished project.

ROB.  I am always concerned about your health. Wish I was closer to help out. But I don't know what I could do to help, as I am allergic to hay and straw dust and molds and fungus. I guess I wouldn't be much help after all. But I can operate a Bobcat and fork lift.    How is that tile floor coming?  Did you get it finished?  I'm sure it is going to look great.

What a strange year this is,  CN Charlie and Seamonster are basking in 60 degree temps today,  360 miles west where we are it is in the low 40's and 200 miles west of us they are in a full blown winter storm and expecting 12 to 16 inches of snow.  Whatever comes will come. Cant change Mother Nature.

Got a couple of days off and I am going to get our Income Tax gathered up and get it to the accountant today, for one thing, then help out MOH as she prepares for a shower for my DIL and new Grandson on the week-end.  I will try to be the good husband and cooperate leaving the MRR till later.

Well it is almost lunch time, but I don't feel very hungry. So I think I'll just pass on it for now.

You all have a great week, safe driving to all and especially Garry in the Big D.

A special Hi-Ho to Cape Jim,  Tipton Bill and Gerry and Sallie of IS fame.

Where is Bama Chuck ?, haven't heard from them for a month or more.

Have a great Cruise Curt, relax and enjoy.

Good work Barry,  we need more guys like you and Amanamedic and Curt.

Will check back later, gators.

Galaxy - don´t get me wrong. I am happy to still have my parents. In their age, each day is a gift. I just find it sad, that they don´t take any interest into their grandchild, as they only take little interest in Petra´s and my life. Yet they expect everyone to jump and hurry to help them. They have been that way the last 40 - 50 years. Maybe it´s their bad childhood during the Nazi times. I have given up on wanting to know - I love them they way they are.

Afternoon at the Diner- March 19th, 2012
Posted by galaxy on Monday, March 19, 2012 11:54 AM

Sir Madog

It is days like today, which make me really sad - we cannot buy even a small gift for our son to congratulate him.

Called my parents to tell them the good news, but they are not really interested in what their one and only grandchild has achieved.

Makes me also mad...

End of rant!

Ulrich- Parents are parents as they are/were, and that is that. CHildren are children as they are/were and that is that. You have a choice: to be a better parent than your parents were, or be the same or worse. CHildren who make one parent proud are great, but children who disappoint one parent are as they are too. It is hte choices we make in interpreting that that makes us all different.

MOH wanted to go to Culinary school in Germany and had an uncle who would have paid it all, and my FIL said No you go to college in USA, and MOH wanted a year off either way. SInce MOH didn't finish college, MIL and FIL thinks MOH is a disappointment, but MOH kindly pointed out THEY were a disappointment for not allowing MOH to persue wishes!!! {and it would not have cost ILs any money to persue the culinary dream in Germany!!!}

SOme day, no matter how disappointing they are, your parents will be gone, and then you may wish they were still here, foibles and all. That is up to you how you handle the now they present. FIL makes MOH angry a lot, but I remind he will be gone someday, and MOH will wish he was here then.

There is a phrase that is not a clean phrase for the diner, but it goes "Don't let the {insert expletive} wear you down!!!"

Back home now after grocery shopping and running errands all morning. It's our Monday routine after getting breakfast at our local family restaurant. We actually finished up a little early today. Will do a couple loads of wash and maybe sneak outside to do a little yard cleanup. Never have I been doing outside yard work this early in the year. Yesterday we went to Phipps Conservatory here in Pittsburgh for the Spring Flower Show. Beautiful as always, but my favorite displays are at Christmas. Wonderful place to visit. Then we had a quick lunch followed by some railfanning. Busy again this week with f5 freights in 45 minutes. One was a huge intermodal with 6 locomotives, either Dash 9's or ES40DC's. Then the rain started coming down pretty hard, so we called it a day and came on home. Ray - I agree with some others here. Those are the nicest and most realistic clouds I've seen that were not commercially produced. I'm really looking forward to seeing the backdrop as you go along. Everybody have a good one. Tom

Good morning. It's 72° and cloudy. The high will be 82° and there's a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Wind is at SSE at 9 mph gusting to 30. Lake wind advisory is in effect.

Running trains again this morning. I have the two 70's era Roco/Atlas GP40's pulling the mainline freight. Their old motors are rumbling nicely. I discovered some internal damage on one them, presumably from a fall from the display rack last year when a hanger on said rack broke and spilled some of the locos on my bed before the racks fall was stopped by the window frame. One of the gear towers was cracked. A little epoxy fixed that right up. The FP7's and GP7's worked hard yesterday and are getting a rest. Had a problem with the newer FP7 yesterday. The motor (mostly plastic) was running quite hot. So I lubed the bearings and put a couple of drops of CRC 2-26 on the commutator, turned the motor by hand a few times then put power to it and ran it in. It runs better now but still runs a bit warm. Warm is all right, hot is not. As regards the Bachmann GP7's, I have nothing bad to say about them. They run quiet and smooth, no stalling, no gear noise and they pull like nobody's business (I run my two as an mu'd set). Same report on their GP9's. David brought his two over yesterday for programming and to have Kadee's installed. They just seem to float down the rails. I'd say Bachmann has made up well for all the trashy junk they sold in the 80's and 90's.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of buttermilk pancakes with real NYS dark amber maple syrup (Day Bros. Farms if you got it) and several cups of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Coffee in a R&GV RR mug please.  Hih?  OK, come as close to THAT as you can......

Another sunny morning outside the window here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  Currently 66°F which already breaks the old record by 3° for this date here.  High is forecast to be 70°F.  Threat of a few thunderboomers later today.

Thanks for the comments on the clouds folks!  I was taught how to make clouds by a guy named Harold Russell MMR #14 at the very first NMRA Meet I ever attended.  I start with some stencils from New London Industries called "The Clouds"  (Good name for them).  They are taped to the backdrop and I have old newspapers taped to cover areas nearby I don't want any spray to get on.  The basic stencil is sprayed with white spray cans.  Since clouds are white on top but gray underneath, I follow up with one or two light gray colors to highlight the bottom.  For this set I then added another cloud underneath the two stencils I used for the top clouds....  A fogging with the white rattle can paint then finishes the job.  I still have to do some more with the horizon along the backdrop, as it gets lighter the closer you get to the horizon.  The blue was tinted by comparing the blue sky here in the Finger Lakes with paint charts, BTW.

Ulrich, these clouds would be monsters for your backdrops.....  I don't know whether they make the stencils for "n" scale or not.  However, you could easily cut them yourself from card stock.  Like most good hobby practice, study nature (prototype) and see how it looks out there, then copy it......  If I was able, I would be privileged to do some clouds for you!  Oh and congrats on your son's accomplishments.  Please send him my best wishes!!!

Have a great day, and stay away from Ken today......  He seems to be sleeping it off in the back booth. Whistling

Ray- Very nice looking clouds. Are they the cloud we keep hearing about on TV?Sigh

Jeff- Nice video.

Ulrich- Your boat looks great and congrats on your sons achievment's.

7. Air Force? Why not the Navy Academy. They turn out far more engineers. AND I presume that you can swim better than you can fly.

I won't pretend to tell him which branch to go into if he wishes, that is HIS decision. BUT, This phrase brought up an old family joke... My MIL is from Germany, FIL from USA. When they moved here, they used to go summers every other year to germany as MOH was growing up. My FIL always wanted to take a "boat ride" {ship- as he was a Navy man} instead of planes to Germany every year, but my MIL refused every time. Finally, he asked WHY she didn't want to take a ship to Europe, and she said "because I cannot swim!'. My FIL retorted, "Oh yeah, well how far can you fly??!!"

RAY-like you, we have naturally broken temperature records too!!! ANd we are set to break records today too! BTW running the AC in the car on the warmer winter days periodically during the winter is GOOD for the system to help lubricate the seals and O rings and such...it helps to keep the AC in top-notch working order for the hot summer months, and makes it last longer. I don't really like the high heat of summer either, but the cold and damp air of winter can be just as hard on me. I'll take what we have been getting lately all year round, hence our desire to retire to Hawaii if we ever get the money to! we just don't care for florida much.

ULRICH- your Boat is looking good, but I think it to small to satisfy either my MIL OR FIL!!!! Will you set sail to the USA???

Well, off to the mailbox to mail a letter. Yes, I still do write letters to those who don't have access to computers regularly. I'm not exactly good at it, but...

Y'ALL HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!

I finished my first quilt yesterday,  I am mostly organized for taxes, and got back to my car shop.  What a busy day.

Mark,  Larry and I discussed going to the Van Halen concert, but the last concert we went to everyone stood up, and I couldn't see anything.  I would need the perfect seat.  Have fun.  Good luck on the SAT's.

Ray Good job on the backdrop!!!!  Hope you will share  how you made those clouds as they have to be some of the best I have seen. I have a hard time painting clouds on sheetrock or hardboard. Just can't seem to get the detail right, on canvas it is no problem but when I go to do a backdrop like yours it just falls way short of my expectations! Thanks.

Good Morning!! Coffee and sweet roll please. Thanks.

A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. Breezy

Jeff- Thanks for sharing the video. Looks good.

Ray- Wow. Those clouds look so real. I think yer a funnin us. That there’s a photy-graph ain’t it.

Well as par for the course I got nothing done I wanted to do yesterday except I did get about a 30 minute nap before she woke me up with a question, “Honey? Honey!? Oh. Were you asleep? I’m sorry but do you think we could open up the windows? Maybe air the house out? Ok, well don’t get up I’ll get them. You go back to your nap.” (struggle, struggle grumble snort comes from the window across the room) “This window is stuck I can’t get it open.” Sigh I get up go across the room open the window. It wasn’t stuck but just… well yes I guess it waaaas stuck but only because it’d been shut for months. But it didn’t take any more effort to over come the stuckness than to open the car door. Anyway, I turn around and she’s gone. I open the rest of the windows and then go down to the basement to find her there sitting on the couch watching TV. Right where I left her before. “Oh, I’m sorry, I got sidetracked. Thanks. You can get back to your nap now”…..“Can’t. wide awake now.” I guess she went upstairs to use the bathroom and saw me napping and just couldn’t handle it.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Good Afternoon Gang!

It is past lunchtime here in Germany, so I´ll just go for some coffee, Janie!

Today is a very special for us.

Our son Christian successfully defended his master thesis and has been awarded the academic title of M.Sc.Eng. His post-graduate studies were completed with a straight A+ average - we are so proud of him! He will start in his new job on April 1st., and in summer, he will also start to work on his doctorate.

The little one has finally grown to be an adult!

I did some w*rk on the boat this morning - here is an update:

Not really much left to do, just install the anchor, hoist the flag and fabricate and install the shrouds. My dictionary tells me that´s the contraption the sailors use climb to to the top of the masts.

Janie - whatever those chowhounds want to have today - put it on my tab. We have reasons to celebrate!

Have a good one, all of you!

Good Morning All,

Mark, don’t discount the Coast Guard Academy, the only military Academy you don’t need a Congressional appointment, your entry is based on your performance. 4 years college for free then after a few years in the fleet you can apply to go back to another college for another 2 years for free.  My cousins went to MIT and are doing very well for themselves…

I made several castings this weekend.  I’m very proud of my steel wire castings and the little fork truck I made.  I have several pictures to post but having trouble with the server, hopefully things are all worked out this week.
