Steam shovels and draglines
Posted by C&O Fan on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 6:55 AM

I'm thinking of buying a

Jordan HO #360-303 Erie B-2 Steam Shovel  for my coal mine scene

has any one built one of these kits ?

Or as Seen here

http://www.riograndemodels.com/HO.htm

What about a

Rio Grande Models # 3063 erie drag line

or a

Rio Grande Models # 3071 erie power shovel

Which is the better kit ?

TIA

I've built the Jordan kit and the Rio Grande railroad steam shovel kit.  Which is the better kit - how?   Both are relatively complicated kits, the Jordan is probably the easiest to assemble, being made from plastic.  Most Rio Grande kits do require filing, sanding and fitting of their cast metal parts.

Here's my Rio Grande kit:

If perhaps you could ask more specific questions re these kits, someone could hopefully add more.

You've answered my questions thanks

Sad thing is the rio grande kits are nice but since they don't accept paypal

and lack a website where you can easily purchase thier kits

they are missing sales

I really like the Jordan kit, I have not tried the Rio units. I don't have any pix of my Jordan kits, as they have not goe to paint yet. Just study the instructions & test fit parts -for proper location, before you add glue. I usually attempt to build the sub assembly or 2 piece parts first. Also, a little scraping & fine sanding stick will really make it nice. If you do that, you will have an impressive model.

Credit cards usually take a percentage of  the sale for a 'handling fee' (5% or more) and a lot of people have issues with Paypal security. A small company may not want the credit cars fee expense or to deal with Paypal.  There is also the problem with getting a secure web store for a company or person who develops their own web site; no one wants to online order through a non-secure website!

If you really want the kit download their order form and mail it with a check.

I'm very aware of the fees but a pay pal account is very easy to set up

I did the web site for our cocker spaniel rescue and included one

and our donations have more than doubled

You really have to measure lost sales vrs a 5% or more  fee

Most of the better e tailers have some kind of online purchasing arrangement

if they would have had pay pal i would already have the kit rather than waiting 3 weeks on snail mail

Another one to think about is more modern, made by Kibri.  It is of a European model, and is actually a drag line with bucket and all:

What a great looking model

but i think it would be too new for a steam era layout like mine

what year was the proto type

I've built the Jordan B2 kit.  Very nice model!  It is, however. like all Jordan kits something which gives me practice saying many of those .... ah.... words my Mom would wash my mouth out with soap for saying.  The kits do, with patience, turn into some really nice models.  I highly recommend them.
