what you suggest definately will solve all problems, other options are:
speaking vey loud next to the machine that you are thinking about buying an Apple computer or going to install LINUX sometimes make them ( those @#$%^& machines) realise that they are expendable, and in some cases they start showing better conduct [:D]

Actually the caboose WAS the passenger car on some railroads. It also served as the REA area, and I have seen pics of the caboose being used to haul milk cans (you know the old metal ones).

On regular passenger trains the conductor was in the coaches and didn't need to ride in a caboose. He did have an area to himself where he would do the paperwork he needed to do. Another item to think about is weight. Why pull an extra car that really isn't needed! Many of the engines were pulling their max load and just didn't need any extra weight to pull.

Reply to Noah's D&H question: It depends on the era you are looking at as to whether you think of it as a regional or larger carrier.

D&H "in the day" was primarily an anthracite road.

In time they expanded north into northern NY with an outlet to Montreal. Thus their slogan "Bridge Line Route Between New England and Canada" which you probably remember seeing on their cars.

IIRC, and I defer to the experts out there, in 1976 the "expanded" D&H came about. They got trackage rights as part of the creation of Conrail. This included rights over the old PRR from Sunbury, PA down to Potomac Yard (Washington, DC). They also got trackage rights on the old EL from Binghamton to Buffalo. The final piece of the pie was trackage rights giving them access to New York and Phildelphia over what used to be parts of the RDG and the LV.

D&H, although it remained independent became part of the Guilford system in 1982. D&H became a CP property in June, 1990. The rest of the story has been covered extensively in the rail press.

One small aside we used to see D&H cars marked for ilmenite service off the D&H in the C&O yard here; they were carrying magnetite for use in coal prep plants. IIRC again, ilmenite is used mainly in ceramics.

Here is a train related joke I picked up:

Good Mornin' Everybody,
It's another beautiful morning in the North Georgia mountains. The coffee was really good today.
I really appreciate everyone's help on the tannery question. It will make that part of the railroad a lot more realistic and interesting.
I've got some yard work to get done this morning and then it will be off to the railroad room to have fun.
Tomorrow I'm heading down to Kennesaw Ga. to the Kudzu Rails fest. Should be a lot of fun and hopefully I can find some information I've been looking for.

Fresh? At 64? In Quebec??? I thought you guys fired up the a/c when it rose above 60?? I'd love to see 64 degrees again, maybe this winter.

The humidity has been awful around here lately, in the mornings you can practically cut it with a knife. It got up to 95 or so yesterday afternoon, just before the power went off. That in itself isn't all that unusual, but this time there was no storm or wind to blame it on. Who knows? Fortunately it came back after only 4 hours.

I had my first try at lettering a car with dry transfer letters the other day. Boy, it sure is easy to get them on crooked, isn't it. Plus, while I'm burnishing one letter, my fingers are pressing it's neighbor on over the letter I just burnished. I'm only trying to put on some reporting marks and car numbers, nothing really fancy. Bought one of those sheets of letters of different sizes, thinking I'd do a few cars, wrong. I need the 1/8" letters for my reporting marks. My railroad name has a 'V' in it. Know how many v's there are in the 1/8" letter set?? 3. One and one half cars and I'm through. Okay, so actually I cut a W in half and finished both cars, but you get the idea. I'm going to use 5% of the letters and have lots left over with no use for them (future signs?). Maybe it's time to seriously consider custom decals.

It's amazing that some "interests" know no international boundaries. Think I;ll go grocery shopping later for the wife-need a lot of stuff from the frozen food section. "It's summer time and the woman -er, the living is easy" (better known as halter and tank top season. . .)

Got to get off this Forum today, or take the PC outside, It's too beautiful a day to be in the office. Guess it's back to the shop downstairs and do some framing and wiring. Hey Elliot,

Wasn't watching the Twins tonight rather painful? Of course we were at the game, and it was probably the ugliest of the season. I guess you would have to expect it though. The Chisox are a very good team and the Twins are really beat up.

The pitcher they just called up from the minors really looked it, and the replacements for Stewart, Koskie, Rivas and Mientkiewitcz just didn't fill their shoes, which of course you couldn't expect.

Hope the Twins get healthy soon!
