Dick: I guess that guy built next to the HV line for the same reason people insist on building in a flood plain. Anyway I'll be interested in hearing how that comes out.
I guess since you guys are going to hit me so hard I'll have the same as Jeff. I might as well since I'm buying any way.
We rode the Rail Runner in Albaqurque while we were there. I think that they have the right idea. The run north is short but the run south is a good ride. The line is the old Santa Fe main and goes right past the SF shops and yards. The car and back shops are still there. There is a transfere table between the shop buildings. The turntable is still in place but the round house is gone. I don't think that the old shop buildings are being used. The next addition is going to be to Santa Fe. Now that will be a real good run. It should be good for the tourest trade in both places. The equipment is the same as we have here running between Ft. Worth and Dallas. Of course we have the RDCs running once in awhile.
I did hit Trains West hobby shop. If any of you get the chance go by there. It is a good shop with a good selection and very friendly people. I walked away with a little brass 2-6-2 by Ajin. Fantastic detail and absolutely has no place on my railroad. It is a dead ringer for the loco that ran from the mines at Madrid and the SF interchange. I'll have to find a place at one of the mines for it.

Jerry - Good to see you back and doing better. It was nice Sallie at least got to visit you Christmas Eve.
Slappy - A helix takes a fair bit of room to do. The one I had on my last layout was around 38" outer diameter and rose 8" in 720 degrees. It was difficult to use and prone to derailments. I used 1/4" plywood with a 1/2" plywood backbone and supports every 45 degrees. The supports were cut to 3/4" section where they hung over the lower section of track. I covered the outside with aluminum wire and plaster with plastic random stone sheet around the bottom so it looked like a giant cake with a collapsed top. Most of the trouble was from bad track laying and I finally got all the kinks at the rail joiners worked out along with enough clearance between the outside of the rails and the inside of the scenery. If you want I can E-mail you some photos I used to have on Railimages as I haven't got the new trainboard account up and running yet.
Putting everything back together in the train room and getting ready for a major cleanup in the basement tomorrow as we get ready to move the woodworking tools to the garage and set up the weights and drum kits. iggest job will be making new wood stock racks for the trim work and dimension lumber. I already store the plywood and other sheet in a leanto at the side of the garage so not much problem there. If time permits I'll start final track prep and wiring the DCC stuff into the feeders - . No turning back then - it'll be decoder time for lots of stock as the only ones I currently have decder equipped are my sons BLI RI E-3 and my N&W J. Should be fun though I think I'll cheat and set up a test track first to do programing on. All for now CUL, J.R.

Got another 3 day weekend coming. Can't wait! Just have to cruise through today.
Spent last night laying carpet for my wifes art studio and then built an air hockey / fooseball table for my son. After that, I was spent. I took a shower, watched an hour of TV, and then I was out like a light!

PA, do you have a track plan yet? Usually that comes before a benchwork plan, but I know when you only have a given area to work with you might do it the other way around. On my first layout I was given an area, so I built the benchwork and then did the track plan to fit that. Anyways, if you have one, do you mind showing it? If not, maybe we could help with it. Maybe a drawing of the benchwork or something so we could begin scratching our heads. Some givens and druthers perhaps?

Good morning everyone, 31F (-1C) here this morning under clear skies, RH=50%, DP=29F, winds are 2mph from the NW.
Yesterday I got all the new purchases and the Christmas gift MRR stuff entered onto my excel spreadsheet for safe keeping/inventory keeping, and so I don't buy duplicate cars with same road number. Today, I hope to work on the lift outs.
UPDATE on house near Power Grid lines: The contractor who was working on some metals pipes supplying utilities to this new house actually got a shock. That is what started the whole investigation. The power company came down with a Gausse meter and the house is way over the safe limit. In otherwords, he is picking up inductance voltage from the high voltage lines ( 345 KV per line) in his back yard. Today on TV news, I saw a better shot of the power lines, it is a DOUBLE set of steel towers, the big boys, that are in his back yard, and it looks like they are only 75 feet from his back door. They showed a multimeter probe in the grounding socket of a duplex outlet, and the other probe to his kitchen sink, and the reading was 59volts AC NICE !!!!!!! Quite a battle going on, the bank wants their money for the mortgage, the power comapny says he built on thier right of way, the owner says it his his father's property and he can prove it, the Town says they could not stop him from building there because there are no State laws regarding this issue, but the Town says they will not give him occupancy permit because the house is not safe to live in. Stay tuned...this may be in your TV news soon, getting national attention.

David Voss: Why do you want to close down this Coffee Shop and open a new one? There's nothing wrong with this one. If you're concerned about the slow loading of the thread and slow saving of replies, the whole forum does that. A new thread wouldn't change that. I think it best to leave things as they are. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

These long discussion threads do impact forum performance over time. While it's great to see such an active thread like this, at some point it needs to be continued in a new thread. Be honest here, when's the last time you read anything in the first 100 pages of this thread besides maybe the very first post?
Why now? If we're going to do this, the new year is better than any other time of the year to start over and begin a new one thread like this.

All, We should nominate someone to take the bull by the horns and start a new thread with a proper introduction and trust him/her to set the ground rules for our new coffee shop. We need a second person to pick out some drapes and find a sutable location along the rails. Oh and give the rest of us proper directions to the new place!

As others have said just prior to my reply.....all you needed to do is introduce yourself, and tell us the "why". We are a logical bunch of guys ( and some gals are here too ).
It makes perfect sense to start the 2007 CS. Archive 2005, 2006, for posterity and future awards to the noteworthy. I can certainly understand why loading the prior 1000+ pages, with many pictures by the way, can slow down the CS loading and the Server response in general....very logical 0100001000001111000 LOL
JEFF: That is indeed good news about David's father, I had visions of seeing him on the nightly news for attacking the landlord slumbum to get his deposit back. David moved there just in time to see the alltime record broken for December snow in Denver.

I should have explained it better but it's just been a long week with 3 sick kids, long nights w/ little sleep, and so thinking of what to post wasn't easy today.
Once a new Coffee Shop is established, we'll get a link to it posted at the end of this thread before it's locked so people know where to go.

I've been in the same situation myself before, plus had a bug that gave ame a cough that just wouldn't go away!
So the Doc gave me some pennicillin, and that combined with a session in my home sauna everyday for a week, finally got rid of it!
