Cape Jim and der, I had cable broadband before moving here so I know what I'm missing. That is part of what make it so frustrating and annoying. I also live just about 15 miles straight line distance from the state capital building in Harrisburg. Everyone in the surrounding areas has had broadband service for years. We just got DSL this past summer and of course cable broadband is being connected now. I think Embarq pushed DSL through to try to get people signed up before the cable was done.

Dick, how are those rules for eating during the holidays different from the rest of the year? I eat like that all the time. I think that's why my doctor gave up on me. There was story in I think it was Fortune magazine a while back on rules for living after retirement. The premise was that our goal is to go face down in a 12 oz. steak at the age of 90. Don't know if I'll make it to 90 but I have a good chance of going face down in some sort fattening food.
PA, if altenative schoo there is like it is here, its where they put all the "problem" students. You don't want to be there. Just study harder and get your grades up, it will affect the rest of your life.

There, you probably will have other students who will interfere with your studying, so you do not want to be there. As Attaboy said, your grades now can help how things go for you later on (good or bad). Study up (for your sake, not ours), okay?

Just figured I'd pop in to introduce myself & say hi.
A little background;
Mid 30s, just re-entering the hobby after a 15 year hiatus.........
BIIIIGGGGGG CPR fan.......which is handy, 'cause I spend about 8 1/2 hours a day within 250 feet of their Minnedosa sub in Manitoba.
Gonna be modelling CP's Minnedosa sub in HO. I've got a 14'x 22' room to start off in, with an adjacent 14'x16' room to expand into. I figure to start out with 26"-32" wide benchwork on 2 sides (with temporary return loops at each end) and try to reasonably complete a section before staring the next (you know, so I don't spend half a year on benchwork, then another on trackwork, and so on..........). I'm working out my track plan right now, and gettin' a little excited about it, too, I don't mind telling you......
I've got 10 locos at this point, almost exclusively Athearn, and about 40 peices of rolling stock, so when I say I'm just getting rolling, well.........
Anyhoo, I'll be in here a lot, trying to benefit from the experience of others, so to speak, and I look forward to talking with alla y'all.

PA(Slappy) - You go to school to get an education. You get an education so you can get a job when you finish school. The only proof you did either will be your grades and diploma. Here the alternate school is not for discipline problems - we have two other programs for them. A proper alternate school is for those that don't fit in with the regular format i.e. a round peg the system is trying to pound into a square hole. We graduate 75% of our alternate students and most of them go on to college. That said, you are better off buckling down and raising your grades in a regular classroom setting because most mainstream high schools have a wider range of courses than the alternates. Make an appointment to visit(revisit) your guidance counselor with your parent(s). Pin down what the issues are and work to eliminate them. It is easy to get caught up in everything unimportant at school - you need to look out for yourself and your own best interests and worry about the rest later.
Fergie - Actual work on the home improvements ! We're impressed. Best wishes and prayers for your MIL and Dad. Just think - someday you'll see your train layout again.

Yeah, I tripped over one of those cables yesterday that was the size of my kids arm! I wasn't aware that they were running a hundred pair cable into this place!

PA-BELT: I was in High School a little over a decade ago and so I still remember what its like. Its very difficult for teenagers nowadays to see anything beyond highschool, and even when they do, the thought process usually only goes as far as college!
Having been through the system pretty recently, I can honestly tell you that grades matter... but not for what you may think. Grades will get your resume looked at by an employer and get you in the door to a job. Once there your existing skills, intelligence and eagerness to learn the job will keep you that job. Skills and intelligence are, in part, aquired while you endeavor to get good grades, while the eagerness to learn the job can be forced, but usually comes easily if you are doing something you find interesting.
Grades are the gateway to that high paying job that you are after. Do the best you can, don't be afraid to talk to parents and educators about how to get better. Socialization is important, but never prioritize being popular over your education. I just went back for my 10 year reunion and heres what I saw: All the 'popular-ites' where married, fat, had kids, had low paying jobs and still lived in the same little town they graduated highschool from. All the others who put their efforts into their education left town, finished college, have decent to well paying jobs that they love, some were married and happy others were single and happy.... the split was phenominal. Trust those on this thread when they say that Highschool is THE MOST IMPORTANT time in your education.
Being a teacher for 5 years, I can honestly say this: Some people just can't learn from books and classroom enviornments. Its ashame to see these intelligent people fail because the teachers can't figure out the students learning style. But if I ever had a choice of working with someone who breezed through school with little effort and landed a 4.0 or someone who busted their *** 24/7 for 4 years straight and pulled a 2.9 average.... I would pick the 2.9 person anyday because they know what a work ethic is.
Don't be lazy, bust your *** and do the best that you possibly can (with as much help as you need) and I gurantee Life will deal you a pretty decent hand.

Wow that's a 300 level class? What happened to theory of languages Lisp, AWK, ML? And advanced data structures like Oct trees, PAULAs, auto-rebalancing trees, and B-trees? Man, out a couple of years and everything changes on you. But that is the nature of computer programming.

Good morning to one and all! The power went out sometime between 1:00a.m. and 3:00 a.m. along about 80 miles of our coast. It wasn’t weather related, “a transmission problem” (Well, Yes!, Hello!) They said at 3:10 that it would be back on at 4:45, then at 6 they said it would be back on at 8, then at 8 they said 9. 8:35 we got power, just as I had fixed up Ellen’s “emergency” water breaker so she could do her teeth, etc. Good thing we have the wood stove, got the house warm from 6:30, and breakfast tea made.
Had more good news on the mrr front yesterday. The Atlas 100 ton trucks and “Accumate” couplers I ordered in the spring have finally been produced, and are in Toronto. They should be here in time for Christmas.
OZJim: Sorry to hear you have the ‘flu. If you haven’t had that before, to the human race!
MDDave et al: Fascinating about all this high tech electronics stuff. I don’t understand more than about one word in ten, but you never know when a light will go on, and a workable idea will come. Hi, all, Christmas party here at work today so things are more relaxed than usual.
Dick, I've been around, just not posting much due to dialup frustration. I do most of my reading here at work. Sometimes I can post from here and sometimes I can't, depends on how cooperative our security system is being. SSA is extremely paranoid about computer security. Once my broadband is up and running next Friday I will be around more regularly.
One thing I forgot to mention last time for claymore/Dave, now that you are in Maryland you will have to go to the Great Scale Model Train Show at the Timonium fair grounds. The next show is February 3-4. There are four shows a year. The October and February shows are the best, more vendors and customers. Some of us have met there in person. I met Cary(Duce) and KenL there about a year or so ago. Ken hangs out at the forum across the street mostly now but still pops in here from time to time. Check out the web site at www.gsmts.com .

Good afternoon gents, it is an unbelievable 55F degrees here at 1pm......this is crazy here in NE for December 14th!! I was checking out the NOAA satellite over the Polar region, and there IS some cold air building and ready to move south. If the timing is right, and a storm forms as predicted in the SW, we just might get snow here next Thursday...a White Christmas here in New England is still possible.

DAVE: You are right ON the money with your advice to our younger modelers still in school. I hired over 200 technicians and engineers during my working career in the field of electronics, and I can concur 100% with the advice your are giving. The C+, B- students come to work with a strong work ethic to prove what they are capable of, while some , not all certainly, of the A students, where everything comes easy, seem to lay back too much, get lazy, and don't push themselves to what they are really capable of achieving.

Sadly I think the spring show got canceled. I was looking forward to it as I didn't make it to 1 this year!
Edit: Never mind. They just rescheduled it from Jan->Feb. Good thing. I only managed to get one of the Atlas Reefers this year. I have a ton to purchase before they disapear.
