Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Nice day down here in Paradise. Cloudy, but pleasant. It’s supposed to warm up even more tomorrow.

We spent a nice mid-day out at the orange grove. [:)] My M-I-L gets the biggest kick out of squeezing the oranges and making O.J. right there in the grove. We bring a 5 gal container and she fills it up with juice. That lasts about 2 days here in the house, what with some being parceled out to a couple of other S-I-L’s and their families who live close by. Plus we bring back enough oranges to squeeze more juice here in the house.

Tomorrow is a big day, we’re actually going to sell some of the oranges. [^] So the guy with the truck and the pickers (totally manual labor here) will be out there around 09:00. We won’t get that much for the fruit, but at least it will offset a little of the cost of maintaining the grove.

I did get some good surform work done this afternoon, so the hills are starting to take shape. [tup] Tomorrow, after returning, I’ll use some spackle to smooth out some of the joints. I’m getting close to being able to put on some ground foam, can’t wait. This really going to make a huge difference in the layout.

Good Evenin' Everybody,
It's been a good couple of days in the mountains. As Teffy and Bill have already mentioned, the floor installation went well. We had no problems getting the toliet out and back in, eveything works, and the water is staying where it belongs. The floor looks really good and the decorating and color selection commitee members like it a lot. I think that all counts as a win. Tomorrow afternoon I've got to install the baseboards and corner mouldings and that will wrap it up.

Today I took Louise down to her conference in Gainesville and then went galavanting. Had a good time at the train store ( TrainMaster's in Duluth). it's a good store. They have a good inventory and very nice people. I picked up a couple of the new Walthers 50' express reefers, which are very nicely done, and another Branchline 80' coach. I never made it to the RR museum though. I went browsing in a bookstore and found James Webb's new book, " Born Fighting, A History of the Scots-Irish in America". He's been one of my favorite authors since his first book, "Fields of Fire", came out in the late 70's. I started reading it while I was waiting on TrainMasters to open and got hooked. It's an excellent book. If you have any interest in the subject, I recommend it highly.

Bill and I are finally going exploring Wednesday. We've scheduled it and cancelled it a number of times due to one thing or another. This time we've both carved it in stone and we're going. It should be a lot of fun.

Noah, helping out at the nursing home dance is a very cool thing to do. I hope it goes well and you enjoy it. It's definitely something worth doing and I'm sure it will be appreciated. The building really looks good. That's a very nice job.

JimRCGMO, the ceramic tile will be Fergie proof IF he shows up with his soldering iron. If he shows up with a big hammer, you'd better stop him at the door.

Philnrunt, when are you planning on heading this way? Kennesaw is only about 1 3/4 hrs. from here. Is there any chance you could swing by this way?

Teffy, I enjoyed your call, and your timing was excellent. i'm glad the mediation school is going well so far. That's also something that's well worth doing. Yes, i'm pretty much on a first name basis with most of the folks at Home Depot. And yes, the lumber leaves a lot to be desired. But that's the case with it at most places anymore.

Ed, no, there is no phone in the bathroom! I was on the cordless phone. A cab forward mike sounds like something the Southern could have used on the Rat Hole Division. even with the Wimble smoke ducts the smoke and fumes in all those tunnels had to have been terrible. It would be an interesting looking locomotive, too.

Grayfox, my next project? You mean I can't just go work on the railroad? Heck! Seriously, next up is refinishing Louise's treadle type Singer sewing machine. It was her Mom's, and it's the machine she learned to sew on. It's beautiful quarter sawn oak, but it's showing it's age. That's an easy, fun type project.

Good evening guys, it has been a somewhat frustrating day for me. First, the wife reminded me that the Pellet stove needed cleaning. If any of you own a Pellet stove, then you know what I mean when I say it is a dirty job when you do the full main tenance clean. I could have passed for an Afro when I was done. But, the job went OK. The trouble was in the Train room!! The troffer lights that are in the new suspended ceiling take two "U" shaped T12 flourescent bulbs. They mount Ok into the sockets, but the bent end of the bulb has this poorly engineered open clip to hold the curved end. It is both too small and tight to get onto the bulb without bending the daylights ( no pun intended) out ot it. I lost it several times as bulbs popped out and clips went fying across the room. .[:(!]

So after church, I took the bulbs back to HD, and the guy in the electrical dept and I had a show and tell. He said the bulbs were correct in size, but the clips were indeed a poor design...NICE !!! We fitted a couple, but the clip has to be right at the peak of the curve, and you have to bend the clips quite a bit to get it to hold at all. Tomorrow will be a fun day mounting all the lamps into the dumb clips.
I fully intend to call the company on Monday and have a nice conversation with their engineers.

Der John: Real nice work on mountains and culvert, boy, I can't wait to get to the fun part.

Noah: Excellent grades in Math and Science, these are key subjects for engineering, and you have top marks. Keep it up Noah, you have a nice future ahead of you.

Luc: the prize is either going to be a copy of Lupo's har, or, the Parrot.

Jim, For your GP9M project, may I suggest that you start with the shell of an Walthers GP9M, or if the Motor works well enough, just use that as a base point. You could take the shell off of the Walthers unit and stick it with a little modification on an Athearn Or other motor and frame. If you were to detail up the shell and add your roads scheme, you’d have it. That’s what I plan to do to make my WSOR GP9M’s. Now for the prototype, the WSOR used to have 5 GP9M’s, and they had I think two or three Non dynamic and the rest were, or vice versa. Now, if that represents the real population of GP9M’s, then I would be they were about equal. It’s up to you what you want to do. As far as seeing it? Well after many weeks of struggling with the durn Building, I finally got it done!!!!! So, I come to offer you all many pre-weathering pictures of this afternoon. Here goes:


Here’s an overall of the front. It shows the front awning, as well as the front windows, and a few of the down spouts.


Here’s a shot of the two truck loading doors. There will be no actual Rail car unloading thing on the building, but I will be running pipes across an access road on the opposite side of the build from this spot, to hoses on the ground next to the track that are theoretically the hooked up to the Plastics cars and the plastic is pumped out.


Here’s a top view. The roof needs to be worked on, as there are gaps between panels, not big but still there, and I’m hoping that some heavy weathering will make them virtually disappear.

Well, there are the fruits of my labor, and I hope you like them. I will post more photos after completing the weathering (which could be another few weeks, like it took me to get to this point).

A quick dash in before I go to quiet Rosie-the-dog with her evening offering [:D] I've been experimenting with Lepages' Exterior Wood Filler as a sort of Sculpamold substitute. I had some on hand and needed something quick to make the highway and diches better. so, here's the result as it dries, and naturally, before sanding down. The white chip at the start of the road is foamcore to match the foamcore road on the doorway module. Where the filler goes out "cross country" from the road is a low spot that I think will turn into a drain from a culvert under the road. It's there to seal a join between two bits of foam!

JimRCGMO, that was what I was trying to say. You finally got it. You are right, sorta. When someone say's that they're giving us a bump they're making a reply to keep us on the 1st page of topics. The topics are usually sorted by the most recent post. So, if no one replies frequently the coffee shop will move to the 2nd page of topics. I hope this clears things up for you.

LilRob, I'm still not sure how everyone else is seeing the pages here. When I came all the way through from the Trains.Com homepage, I just saw the overall forum list and then got to the Coffee Shop (page with the *very* first posts here), and then clicked on the last page link to get to the page where you'd written. Still puzzled...[%-)]

My setup, if that makes any difference, is that I have popups turned off, and I use tabbed browsing (if I Command-click - think that would be like a right click on Windows - it opens another tab in my browser with that page. Then if I need to go between a couple of pages or a page and the reply page, I just click on the other tab. I can do a screen grab and get a picture for you if you email me. Maybe that'll begin to clear things up...

The Walthers Trainline GP9M is probably the best base out there - I've seen these in action and they seem solid, reliable locos which run well and have a decent (if a little basic) bodyshell, perfect for superdetailing! I think it has dynamic brakes as standard, though I've no idea what Phase it is. Hope this is of help!

Thanks to all those who advised about the Doodlebug trailer - The decoder for this railcar arrived in the post this morning, and was fitted within 5 minutes. I've since had to put a couple of 220 Ohm resistors in, one for the headlight and one for the interior lighting, as they were getting a bit too hot for my liking! It now runs smoothly and looks good.

I have decided that I'll only be buying BEMF decoders in future - have fitted a Lenz 1014 to the doodlebug (which doesn't have BEMF) and while it's a vast improvement over the Bachmann decoders I've tried, it's not quite as good for slow work as the 1024 I fitted into one of my FP7s today - that thing is great, need to get another 1024 to fit the other matching FP7 with.

I'll be trying the Bachmann decoders I have on Athearn BB locos as their tendency to "take off" might be counter-acted by the Athearn loco's higher starting voltage, worth a try anyway! They'll probably be replaced with Lenz decoders in the locos they're currently fitted to.

Okay, one more question - I'd like to (at some point) get a GP9 low-nose for my (freelanced) road. Best route? Were most of the GP9M's a particular phase (since I'm aware of their being 3 phases)? Did they usually have dynamic brakes?

What's a good starter GP to work from, if I need to modify/kitba***o get what I want? Don't have a particular line's GP9M in mind, but maybe one that might have a sNoah plow on it, and (if it would have one) winterization hatch? Good place to find out what the 1:1 GP9M would look like - without buying an expensive book I'd use once and have sitting for years (frugal person that I am)?
