Tom- I mailed Bill the same info I sent you, hope it works out. You Joe-gia people are so nice!
Jim in Mo- Of course, you and the others are absolutely right, brass track has workd fine for the last 10,000 years, and it will be probably be in use on the first layout on Io. Getting trains running is by far the most important aspect of it all. And as I have NO trains running, not since last year- and lots of NS track waiting to feel steel wheels on them (it?) well, just pay no attention to the man behind the curtain! Glad to see your getting it going.
Matt- Rear foglights? Man, you Brits think of everything. I had an aftermarket backup light mounted on the roof of the FJ-40 (came off a tractor), but I never thought of rear foglights. Do people ever think it's a motorcycle driven by an American tourist in the wrong lane? It sounds like a great idea, but being in police work, I can see that if they had it here, it would end up being alot more work for us. We just are not that adaptable, and sooner or later kids would be putting 20-30 of them across the back!
Ed- Amy and I are really looking forward to meeting Bill and Tom, she thinks its so neat that people from this site actually do meet. I plan to run by the Brigade Quartermaster store and spend what little money I have left there on camping goods, then spending some time with the boys. Should be a good time.
der5997- No, the photo was fine, it's just these old Mk 1 eyeballs. I took another look, and indeed, if I get close enough to be far away, squint the left and rapidly blink the right, it DOES look like an EMD! (sigh).
Paul- I was thinking the same thing when I read about the Cornwallis dead in the water- what did Fergie do? When they find that tiny Kadee coupler spring bridging the gap in the main generator, or a set of NWSL steel wheels jamming the steering gear, well..... And as far as glue guns go, I had NO idea that anything other than a marshmallow roasted over a campfire, could be that hot AND sticky! We could introduce a whole new phase in warfare if they set up hot glue dispensers. Burn the enemy and hold them in place at the same time!
Just 2 more days til the trip to Savannah, and let me tell you, after 62F yesterday and 2" of snow last night, we are ready. Take care all!

Evening, Chloe - an Ed's OJ smoothie, please! [:)] Looks like we'll be in the 20's tonight, but we didn't get the snow last night (Tues.) that they apparently were forecasting for us. I missed that forecast, but some people at work filled me in on it.

Looks like there'll be some heavy MRR'ing the next few days in Texas. Hope your weather is good. Tom and Bill appear to have had a good time for their excursion.

Saw the video tonight on the news about the "Train Jam" - looked like only one engine, but it was moving at a good clip when it went through/past the truck. The video from the other side of the track looked worse - saw some fire/explosion on that side. Couldn't believe nobody in the truck was injured, amazingly.[:O] But the account said 1 or 2 people on the train were injured. [:(]

Guess we'll have to check for news reports about the Cornwallis and see if they mention a soldering iron and/or an electrical cause for the ship's being 'stalled' in the ice. Kind of bad when the icebreaker needs help! Made me think of the car ad (Volkswagen?) several years back, that asked "Ever wonder how the snow plow driver gets to the snow plow?" (and showed him driving up in a VW) [:)]

Layout looks good, Brian - you have room enough to put a couple of (angled?) industry tracks inside the upper level/inner loop. Maybe some kind of small mine or other industries, depending on what you want in the way of structures. I like it![:)]

Good Evening Everyone;
The interesting thing about starting page 300 is that last week I noticed that we were getting close. I wondered who would do it. I never thought it would be me since I always seem to miss by “that much”.

Rob; You think you’re broke? You aught to see the bill from doing the 300.

Flip; Really. And we all thought you were such a clean cut young fellow. Just goes to show you how looks can deceive. I’m so very happy to hear that Deb is doing well. I’ve been down that road with Mary Ann a few times and it can be nerve wracking. Treat her nice now.

The Cornwallis is dead in the water? I wonder if that has anything to do with a soldering iron. I was thinking about Fergie and his soldering iron Monday. I was under the platform where Tweety bird is mounted soldering his control wires to the centronics connecter. I was being very careful so as not to pull a Fergie. I managed to get through the process with out a problem. So today I glued my hand with the hot glue.

Greg; I’ve been trying to fini***he 15 acres that I have leased from my next door neighbor for the last 4 weeks. The only time I can get over there is on Sundays and it’s been raining and too wet. Now that the rain has stopped for a few days I thought I’d get in there Sunday. Guess what? Rain for Thursday. At least you got to do something on the layout.

I’ve been shooting a Brown Bess for a number of years and I can tell you that they aren’t as inaccurate as has been commonly believed. There have been a times when I’ve beaten folks shooting muzzle loading rifles.

Jim; About the brass track. I’m still using some on my layout. Some of it has to be 40+ years old and it still does the job. Granted NS is better but use what you got.

I managed to get to the basement tonight. Amazing. It was nice to tear into things for awhile. It didn’t last long but any progress is OK.

I have come up with actually building a coffee table that will stand roughly 2 feet tall and be aproximately 3' X 5'-6"... the layout will be in the top half of the table surrounded by plexiglass with a removable plexiglass top (just in case any of the trains derail).

Good evening One and all: The only mrring thatI've been able to do recently has been to paint on WS Flex Paste to the road. I was sanding the road surface, cleverly leaving rough shoulders, when I realized that I was actually creating a pavement that was below the level of the shoulders[B)] So, I'm now using successive coats of Flex Paste to build up the pavement to be higher than the shoulders. Not very exciting, but it keeps me in the game, so to speak.

Good Evenin' Everybody,
Today was a very good day in the mountains. The weatherguessers missed again. The weather never did clear off, it stayed gray, rainy and chilly all day. Bill and I had a good time anyway. We ran some of his locos. The Spectrum 4-6-0's are very impressive. They run beautifully and are very well detailed. They're just a little too early and small for my operating scheme, but they are very nice. I've talked him out of his Spectrum light mountain in L&N markings. We still have to work out what he wants in exchange, but we can do that. It's very close to accurate for a late 40's L&N mountain right out of the box. It won't take much to get it ready to go, unlike most Southern Railway steam, which usually needs a lot of work to go from USRA standards to late steam period Southern Rwy.

After we played with trains for a while, we headed up to Murphy, NC to do some exploring. Fortunately for us model railroaders, a lot of what was there in the 40's and 50's is still there, particularly around the tracks and the SOU-L&N interchange. After that we headed over to Copper Hill Tn. to take a look at the copper smelter and some other stuff. It made for a really good day.

JimRCGMO, that's a good decision. While NS rail is better, brass and bright boys will surely work, and get trains running, which is what counts. Good luck with the car, I hope you get it sorted out.

Ryan, we're in the Blue Ridge mountains. They run from Virginia, on the east side of the Shennandoah Valley ( the Alleghanies are to the west of the valley) all the way down into north Alabama. The Great Smokies, in western NC and east Tennessee are a particular section of the Blue Ridge.

JP, good luck finding the right place. I'm glad that ya'll are able to deal with it as well as it seems you are. That does make it easier to handle. Not easy, but at least easier. As I mentioned, I did radio school at MCRD San Diego, then back to the east coast with 8th Comm. Bn. at Lejuene. From there it was off to 9th Marines in Nam. I see that your Westpac tours were 13 months. I think that's a Marine thing. Not a year, 13 months, thank you. Incidently, I love sweet potatos, just about anyway they're fixed.

RRBrit, I'm glad the seminar went OK. That is a tough proposition to argue, because it really takes all of it. At least you want to have all of on your side.

TurboOne, tax time is on my list to start next week. It's time to get it done and through with for this year. Besides, the sooner we get it in, the sooner the refund shows up.

Flip, That sounds like a very trying day. I'm glad Deb is doing as well as she is. Just remember that we are all with you both.

Trolleyboy, you're exactly right. The bright uniforms and flags were needed for unit cohesion on smoky battle fields with very restricted visibility. With the short ranges and poor accuracy of smooth bore muskets, it wasn't a terrible problem. But when the rifled musket came into common use that changed very quickly. Unfortunately it took a lot longer for the tactics to change to keep pace with the weapons.

I didn’t have a chance to respond to anything this morning because we went back out to the orange grove. Does this start to sound like a “job” to anyone? [:D] I’ve got the FCVN shipping up another tank car of juice and a reefer of fresh fruit. But I’m still balking at the idea of driving it north! Anyway, so now I’m snowed under with comments to respond to.

Did get some smoothing done on the foam hills this afternoon after getting back. The breeze was blowing the foam dust around so much that I decided to just take the layout out on the terrace and do the sanding out there, and let the breeze blow the dust away. Actually worked okay, except that I got covered in foam dust. It’s kind of neat that I can pick up the entire layout and carry it outside without any help. [^] Actually, it’s more awkward than it is heavy. Once it’s scenicked (sp?) I won’t be able to do that without damaging something.

Of course the standard response would be to get the 2 br, so you have one available for the layout. But on a more serious note, considering that finances are often stretched at these times, you need to find something that doesn’t put you behind the [8] money-wise. Good evening everyone!!! A very wild weather front is coming through right now, howling winds, driving rain, temperature had hit 60 today, now down to 34 and dropping like a rock. Winter is returning for the next 7 days.

Tom: ya, I know what you mean by travelling to work. I travelled as much as 58 miles to work one way, for two years, then 40 miles one way for another 8 years, and finally I got to work close to home for the next 26 years, only 25 miles one way. I was able to travel 10 miles to work for only 17 years. It really was tough in the winter months.
And busy in retirement? I am busier than ever!!! The Honey Do list never gets shorter!!

Jim: thanks for good wishes for the trip north to NH. I will be visiting my favorite HS while up in Intervale, just north of North Conway on routes 302&16. Do you need me to pick up some NS track for you while there?

Brian: all the talk about the various branches of the service brought back memories for me too. I served in the Army Guided Missile program from 1959 to 1962. I was stationed at two different Nike Missile sites, one had Nike Ajax missiles and the other site had a more advanced Nike Hercules missile Battery. I got to go to White Sands NM 4 times to fire test fire missiles, and we stayed at Fort Bliss, El Paso. And yes Ed before you ask, I did go to Juarez each time I was down there. Seniorita !!!!WOW !!
I hope your parents let you built the coffe table layout...I saw one a while ago in a business office, and it was under a plexiglass top, it was really spectacular, I loved it...it was "N" gauge.

Good Afternoon All:

I talked to Flip this morning and as he was walking out the door to go back to the hospital - he said that the bone deteriation was worst then the x-rays showed but the Dr. was able to clean it up and now he'll be better prepared for the next surgery which will have to go in through the back of the neck.

The fuscia package got here the other day. I ran into my postman later at the local cafateria and he ask me how Stephanie liked her package, when I explained that it was mine - I just got this odd stare. I finally had to tell him about the pink loco. I thought some of the people in the line were going to bust a gut, they were laughing so hard. Now I've got to take some pictures so ya'll can see what I got.

I enjoyed our conversation the other day. Fran sure sounds sweet. I notice your calling your place paradise - just wait 'till June. I've talked to all of the guys and they said lets go so we've got four layouts to visit including mine.

Ryan:
The show that I told you about is outside and free, it's probably about 2 maybe 4 blocks long. Are you flying or driving? If you drive, talk to me as I'm in the tour business and have driven it many times. After all you HAVE to eat in the resturant mentioned in John Madden's book. It's a good mexican resturant in Van Horn. (Well for Ed it's Tex-Mex food.) Again, if you drive you'll be comming down I-10 and I'm only 11 miles off it so ask the wife if she'll give you 30 minutes. It's actually closer to come through Port Atrhur then go through Beaumont. When I went to Aggro's profile it wouldn't go back that far so I'm going to try it again.

Matt that is good news that you survived that seminar.Jim it may be [#offtopic]but the other reason those uniforms were bright is that on a battlefield at the time muskets cannons an cavelry created a lot of dust so in order to keep track of your own men bright flags and colours were used.Also drums and bugles bagpipe music was used in place of audible orders as again the noise before radios made giving the order to advance and retreat very difficult. The weapon of choice at the time the musket was non rifled and had only an accurate range of 50 yards so the idea of the lines was that if the whole line fired at once you would get a shot gun effect as some shots would go high some low some to left etc.So a well disaplined regiment could devistate the enemy with properly timed vollies of fire. Matt, congrats on surviving the seminar and getting a few points with your professor/instructor. You're right about the uniforms - but as I recall from reading, those uniforms were left from the times when the opposing armies lined up, took shots at each other in a more 'civilized' manner. We Colonials, however, refused to play by the rules. (Some would say that's still true of a lot of Americans, but that's another [#offtopic] matter...)[}:)][;)]

Brian, you could probably still fit a fairly nice switching/operations-oriented layout in that size plan. So long as you don't have any pets that could reach in and grab a boxcar to chew on...[:O]

JohnP, glad to hear (for both of you) that you two have been able to work on things together. You will continue to be in our prayers.

It's been a fairly busy afternoon at work (short afternoon, 'cause I'm on-call tonight). Need to finish some things up before I head out. One to assess at country jail already. Hoping God gives me a fairly quiet night.

Going to talk with a friend about cutting my 4 X 8 board for me, with a curved front and then cut it into two 2' (module) sections. Hoping I can arrange that at least by this next weekend. Then the fun stuff...[8D]

Afternoon all- They run that hospital like the the army. Be here at 11:30. Great, gives us a chance to get some x-rays and not have to rush. Late p.m. phone call- be here at 9:30.
Oh,Oh, ru***ime in a.m.. Get to hospital 9:20,whew. Go to waiting room till they call us.
Sit and wait till11:45.[censored].I stay in different waiting room. 2:25 they have Deb in operating room,So its wait-wait-wait. 4:40 , dr. comes out tells me how messed up the spurs were-what he think s aboutt next months op. More exacting-dangerous. All the good stuff. Like i'm not worried enough now. I am fully aware of possiblities.
Oh, Deb is doing fine. Throat little sore. Brought her home about 1ish. She has benn asleep now for 2 hours. Not supposed to bend, lift over 4 lbs and a few other no,nos.
Thanks again for all the prayers and positive thoughts.

Wow looks like I nailed #6000 with my last post so a round of the speacial stuff for all on me[:p][:)][:)][:)] Brian good luck on your layout plans,I remember seeing a couple of interesting coffee table plans in either the first or second model railway planning magazines,mind you I think it was oversizedscale and trolley's but if you can do something that big than in normal scale you should be able to fit in mountain ranges and everthing.
