Good Mornin' Everybody,
It's another gray rainy morning in the beautiful North Georgia mountains. It's supposed to rain off and on all day today. We need some sunshine, at least long enough to dry the grass enough so I can get out and cut it. It's growing fast - right now it's tall enough for small critters to hide in it. Maybe tomorrow. I'm going to buy a "Squirrel proof bird feeder today. Found the current one on the ground last evening. I wish I'd seen them do that. It had to have been fascinating to watch.

Well folks, I've got some errands to run this morning, and then more wallpaper to strip in the kitchen. I'd better get to it. This afternoon I've got one more set of feeders to hook up and the industry tracks in the revised section of the railroad will be done. Progress is slow but steady.

We sail in about an hour for fuel then off into the deep blue yonder. I started the Cornerstone Midstate Marble Products kit last night. It's a good kit and has several parts that make it interesting, I'll keep you updated as I progress.

Finally got some feedback regarding the Blair Line Kits being a good kit. So I think I will purchase it next month.

I maybe in St John over the next month and hope to get to the Hobby Store there as it is a really good store for trains. Who knows I may run into Fundy Northern.

It is hard to see but there is smoke coming out of the smokebox. Let me tell you that thing is very loud when the steam is coming out of the cyclinders. Might not be too bad just going by at track speed but when starting up it is loud.

Chris, It's located in North Freedom WI. That's about 3-5 miles west of Baraboo WI. There a standard gauge, running on about.....oh....5 mile line of track. It's an old mine line, running from the former CNW main line, now WSOR, to an open pit quarry. It's a nice ride and it's really neat.

Phil, I know who you mean, I listen to there music all the time. That's about the only kind of music I listen too, is oldies form the 60's and very early 70's.

Jim, congrats, I know you've been waiting for that for a while.

'nother boring day, nothing to do but surf around here. I'm listening to a web scanner from the San Fransisco bay area, UP, and the dispacher just gave out a track warrent. It's really neat to listen to.

Noah: I know this is a little late, but [bday][dinner], but then again I guess I'm still ahead since it sounds like your B-Day is tomorrow. (I don't blame you for eating a piece of DQ cake early though!) Since I've only been thru the western edge of Wisconsin, I'd have to get a map to know where that tourist line is, I don't really know much about the Upper Midwest until you get around the Superior, WI/ Duluth, MN area, and that's still a ways north of you.

There was a train wreck at a town just south of where I live, it hit a garbage truck. The paper showed a big color photo of Kansas City Southern GP-40-2 #4700, wasn't damaged at all. The driver of the garbage truck was OK.

One more day until we leave for Galesburg! But, no digital camera, so no pics[:O][:(][banghead] (Don't worry though, me and my sisters are planning to get my parents a digital camera for Christmas, by then I should have most of my scratchbuiling/ locomotive detailing projects done, and I could get pics of the KCS in Illinois...[8D])

why is it that trains, cameras, and a few extra minutes never seem to converge in the same moment ?
- when I see a cool train and have the camera, I just have no time
- when I have time and see a train, wife's got the camera
- when I have time and see a train, and I brought the camera, ... it's in the back seat
- when I'm hanging around with camera, and extra time... no train (or worse, no film)
maybe it's just me , I'm a rookie at train-watching / railfanning[banghead]

I saw two UP Radio Controled engines shoving a cut of cars today. I couldn't get the numbers but know they were RC because of the yellow flashing lights. Adrianspeeder (Adrian) posted he was tired of seeing Amtrak trains but they come though here around 5 am and just before midnight so I seldom get to see Amtrak. [:(] I would love to be riding it especially on a long distance trip and in a sleeper car. One of these days I will but it will be a while. [;)]

I started Noah a birthday thread in the trains.magazine forum if you would like to go there and make a post in it. [;)] I think he should share that cake, what do yall think? [:p]

The 30th Anniversary Special Edition of Blazing Saddles is out. I remember seeing this film at a drive in movie. Now the land that was a drive in is a housing subdivision. [:(]

Here is a small review of the movie.

Mel Brooks scored his first commercial hit with this raucous Western spoof starring the late Cleavon Little as the newly hired (and conspicuously black) sheriff of Rock Ridge. Sheriff Bart teams up with deputy Jim (Gene Wilder) to foil the railroad-building scheme of the nefarious Hedley Lamarr. [}:)] [;)]

To me this movie was the start of some very funny movies from Mel Brooks and others. [:)]

Tom, I see you’re still involved with your struggle with the squirrels. However I think that looking for a ‘squirrel proof bird feeder’ is kind of like the search for the Holy Grail, never ending.

Chris, while you’re waiting for Christmas for the digital camera, I don’t know if you realize you can get a CD made of your regular film. I believe most photo stores or drug stores that process film can give you a CD with electronic versions of your photos when they process your film. That way you can edit and post them without having to wait 6 months.

Not much earth shattering info to report today. Why should today be any different, I suppose? Trying to get myself energized to restart the project of switching out the rapido couplers in my locos for M-T ones. I’m too far along with the rolling stock conversions to go back now. There’s no remedy but to keep changing out the loco couplers.

Wow, has it really been 30 years since Blazing Saddles came out??? Can’t be, I’m not that old……well I don’t think…….is Cleavon Little really gone? Yeah, that certainly was a great flick. I can still laugh just thinking about some of the stuff they did. What does a “30th Anniversary Special Edition” consist of? Just curious. It seems to me I just heard that title a few days ago in the favorite trains flicks thread.

First, welcome to the forums in general and to the Coffee Shop thread. [#welcome]

I can't help much because I'm not a real experienced modeler. I only know to periodically use a Brite Boy (an eraser type cleaner) over the rails. But I suspect that these days there are a lot more options, including rail cleaning cars that you operate as part of a train.

Let me suggest that you consider posting this question as a new separate topic on the forum. While you might get some responses here, this thread doesn't really get the traffic or visibility that a separate thread on the general forum would.

Feel free to drop in on the Coffee Shop thread, we have a relatively small group of folks here who like to just visit and chat about whatever.

Why does it seem that somehow every discussion about model railroading end up with a mention about Blazing Saddles?

Ed: Don't worry about me waiting 6 months to show pics of my models, I haven't even gotten started on any of my projects yet. (I probably won't until I get an airbrush.)
I'll think about putting the regular film pic's onto a disc though if I get any good train pics in the yard or museum at Galesburg.

Not much action on the Reading Line lately, I saw a CR GP40-2, three NS high hood GP38's, an HLCX (ex MPI) SD40M-2, and a CR SW1001 lined up together and a GEC-Alsthom GCFX SD40-2 in Allentown today plus a few SD38/MT6 slug sets, a C40-8W and quite a few C40-9W's.

Yes sir, the day was good. Went to local cafe for lunch, got a little 2 inch by 3 inch cake free because it was my Birthday so that was neat. And I had a visit from the money fairy.This morning we found so far $18.00 in change out on our front lawn. We found $13.00 by eye, and then I took a cheap $10.00 metal detector and found another $5.00 worth from the metal detector. I'm going to go comb the lawn some more tomarrow see if I can't find some more. It's all mine too, as I did all the work. Although if we see something in the paper as somebody being robbed of a change jar or something, we'll tun it in. Sure is strange. And At the train ride I got to ride in the Locomotive, even though we didn't pay the extra for it. We rode down the line in the coach like normal, but at the end the conductor said we could go ride in the cab back to the station if we wanted to. Couldn't turn them down. I wonder if it didn't have to do wiht the fact we said we knew the conductor from the WSOR, the one that gives us all the rides, as he works as a voluteer engineer once in a while at the Railway. It was neat. I'm rounding up my Day by surfing around here, yes it's all good.

osagebeach Go to your local store and buy a box of baby wipes. They work absolutely terrific and I swear by them, after learning about them at the local hobby shop.

The SW1001 was built by EMD for the Long Island RR and the Reading for tight clearances. The ex Readign units still work for NS and CSX

A necessity for diseasel challenged steam loco fans like me. SD38's were another EMD road switcher built back before you were a gleam in your father's eye. [:D] Marre's book says "The SD38, SD40, SDP40, and SD45 ride on the same frame, with the result that the SD38 and SD40 have large platform areas extending beyond the hoods at each end. The radiator fans are the distinguishing feature. The SD38 has two large fans; the others have three." 2000hp, built 67-71. Trust me, I couldn't have told you any of that without looking it up. I assume short quotes like this are alright, but someone correct me if I'm out of line direct quoting the book like that.

Sounds like Dougal lives in the middle of a pretty heavy rail traffic area. Wish I had realized when I was young just how I should have taken advantage of living so close to NYNH&H (not CR) rails. I'll never get that chance again.

Good News about me posting GRRD pics on the internet! We were using one-time-use cameras for a while, but I seem to have fixed our old Vivitar camera! My original plan was to give my pics to my sister, so she could scan them and post them on a site like railimages.com, but I just found out her scanner won't work now...[:(] She's planning to get one of those $100 scanner/printer/copier all in one machines now though.[:)]

I was digging my trains out of storage today (no space for layout, being in college and all) and I discovered a few damaged items.

-apparently in a moment of lapsed judgement several years ago, I glued the dynamic brake housing of an Athearn SD40-2 in place backwards(!). I broke it free, but at the cost of a tiny little corner of the part.
-the bell of my Athearn SW1000 has traveled to parts unknown
-two of my Athearn Husky Stack cars have lost ladders
-my only Walthers 89' Twin 45 flat car has lost its brake wheel
-ladders fell off of a MDC tight bottom ore car, but managed to not vanish into thin air
-a box containing at least four cars has decided to go into hiding, taking my sole passenger car with it. This box was one of two stored in a different place than the rest of my things because some of the things in it were used as recently as 2002 under the Christmas tree

Anyhow, where would be a good place to get the parts I need? I can't think of a replacement dynamic brake made by someone other than Athearn, same with the Husky Stack ladders. I figure I can get a bell and brake wheel almost anywhere, but I don't know what kind of wheel is suitable for the flat car. And that missing box of rolling stock is making me cry on the inside, but none of you people can help with that.
