philnrunt,
I've already thought about doing the G scale track around the roof of the RV. I figure I could get about 70' of track. It would definitely be different. lol
I 've been looking at the pier for 7 1/2" guage. I don't think my loco and cars would be able to make the 6' radius turns I'd have to use to put 7 1/2" on the RV roof. 6' radius might be abit much. lol !! Getting the loco up there might be interesting too. Carrying 300 lbs. up the ladder would be abit rough on the back.

Good Mornin' Everybody,
It's a beautiful morning in the mountains today. We should get up into the high 50's this afternoon, and there's not a cloud in sight. It will be a good chance to open the house up and air it out. Today is going to a busy one. There are chores and errands to take care of this morning, and this afternoon I need to replace the headlights on my truck. Both still work, but they've gotten pretty dim. It's a '93 Mazda B-2600, and they are orginal. Since neither they nor my night vision work like they once did it's time. We have an MR club meeting in Copper Hill Monday night and I want more light for the ride home.

I did get a good bit done on the RR yesterday. The road and surrounding terain is carved and surfaced with joint compound. It needs to be smoothed a bit before it can be sceniced, but a damp sponge makes quick, dustless work of that. The backdrop mountains for that section are done and drying. They're almost ready to install.

Tomorrow Louise and I are going to the Atlanta Flower Show. Neither one of us do Atlanta very well or willingly but this is supposed to be a great show, and well worth the trip. We'll make a day of it and have a good time.

Calif. Tom, you're very welcome. I think it's a very common situation, much more so than some folks let on. One of the best pieces of advice about model railroading I've ever read was in an article by Paul Dolkos, whose modeling I admire and respect. He said " If something about your layout is bugging you, change it, don't live with it, fix it! The frustration of living with it will be worse than the time and effort to fix it".

Noah, If it's time to start over then do it and enjoy the process. ( See above) It's all a part of the hobby and it's a chance to try different things and learn more. And it's all fun. It took a lot of time to correct the problems in my railroad. I basically kept the same general design, but over several years I ripped out and rebuilt about 65-70% of it. I'm much happier with it now than I would have been if I hadn't done it.

I'm going to sign off for now and get the day started.
Have a great day, everybody,
Tom

Good Morning, Its bright, sunshine, and the snow is a melting here in southern New England. Got the gandy dancer working one more time, after having to spend about two looking for a micro spring that went boinging across the room. This is going to be quick this morning, I just stepped in to get a cup of clear liquid, continue to get to know the regulars here, in 2 hours I'll be undergoing that time honored examination infamously known as the Colonoscopy. Why in the hell am I so nervous for? I always like to leave, sharing some kind of tidbit with the group, so........Many years ago in Scotland, a new game was invented. It was ruled
"Gentlemen Only...Ladies Forbidden"...and thus the word GOLF entered into the
English language.
Well its time I mosey over to the clinic........see ya......

Someone said that the third time is a charm - well it better be! This is my third attempt to get my arthritic fingers to do what they are supposed to do - fucntion! So, here goes again.

This Coffee Shop is the place to be - no doubt in my aging head. So, I'll take my seat in the corner, back against the wall, and enjoy the talk. Coffee isn't bad either (decaf, thanx!). I hang out at ChiefEagle's place too - so between the two, my free time seems to be dwindling, dwindling, dwindling ........

I posted a topic in the Railroads forums, CANADIAN PASSENGER TRAINS - and some very interesting responses have come back. Now, that's why I wanted to get involved with a railroad discussion group - just to enjoy, learn, and contribute to something near and dear to my heart - trains!

And from how you feel about the PE not arriving, might I suggest we step into the Club Car for a little Irish Coffee....uhhh, better make that decaf. But, as long as you aren't bitter about it, thats the important thing!

I'm all for it! Unleaded coffee is what I drink too. Irish coffee or Italian, German, Canadian, Norwegian, Greek or just a "dash" of Jack Daniels will do just fine for me!

And no - I'm not bitter in that sense - but annoyed, absolutely, I'm too far into life to let this tie me up in knots - but annoyed is perhaps the better description.

Would I tie the SOB to the RR tracks who was responsbile for this foul up? Hmmmmm, an entertaining thought! Me, bitter - ha!

QUOTE: Boy Scouts handbook (still have my original one and another one or two that were a few years later, all of 'em pretty old now). Summer camps, Courts of Honor (I only made Second Class - didn't get moving soon enough on the various requirements; my older brother got Star, I think), Order of the Arrow tapout and that weekend (). The memories (as the DJ might say) just keep on a'comin'...[laugh]

You sure flicked my switch with that one! While I don't have ANY of my Boy Scout stuff - it all disappeared, along with my Lionel trains when I left home for good at 17 - finally joined the service after graduating high school in 1956. So what I do have are my memories.

I have thought of the Order of the Arrow tap out in years - although when my two sons were inducted, well the memories (and a tear or two) all came rushing back. My tap out is so vivid .. Camp Aquehonga in New York state's Catskill Mountains (near a place called Narrowsburg, NY) - that's where it happened. I was a camp counsellor that summer - actually partial summer, in that the 1953 Jamoboree in Santa Anna, California at Irvine Ranch interrupted my 'work.'

Here's the good part: We took a train from New York City to Santa Ana - B&O coaches with seats converted into "beds." What a great, great adventure for a 15 year old. The stops along the route (more southerly going and notherly returning) were fantastic. The whol thing took three weeks and - get this - cost $300! Can you imagine trying that today?

My Scoutmaster was also my boss at a local men's clothing store. He challenged a buddy of mine and me to work for the $300. If we made it - he said he would match it so that we'd have spending money. We did - he did - and the rest is locked in my memory forever! 50,000 scouts in one place .... wow.

Appreciate the "jolt," Jim!

Okay enough - I'll just sit around for a bit ..........

Ahhh old scout stories.... you should hear my dads from the 57 jamboree.... he got to take the Daylight Express out there to Valley Forge..... Yes that would have been the Southern Pacific Steam Daylight.

Now for the Irvine Ranch.... I am sad to say but it has been started to be developed into housing.... some people are trying to fight it but it's not going anywhere.

Well, good morning all--just finished my first mug of Vienna Roast and my daily English Muffin. Survived the first Wiley night intact--he whined a little, but hey, it's a new environment, right? Having cats is sort of like the favorite joke at my Parish: Question: How many Catholics does it take to change a light bulb? Answer: What do you mean--CHANGE!!? (Courtesy of Sr. Margie, in case any of you think I'm overstepping any lines.)
Noah: Don't get discouraged about having to change out the layout, buddy. If it helps at all, my Yuba River Sub is the second such monster, the first just didn't work at all (had a helper yard halfway up a 2% grade for one. Now THAT makes sense, right?). I not only tore out the layout, I ripped up the benchwork and just started in an empty garage from scratch. I even had to do a major change on the new one this week, tearing out and replacing a return loop that was under my self-imposed minimum radius (I thought it would work, until my 2-10-2's went on collective strike). There is an up-side to all this re-construction, I found another place for a bridge, LOL! (Yah, like I NEED one?). Anyway, don't get discouraged--if you don't mind a musical analogy, model railroading is a lot like returning to a piece of music you learned a while ago: You can always find something new to improve.
Anyway, it's raining out here in sunny Cal again--which means I can't open the garage door to work on the front of the new extension (had to empty the beads from the shop-vac twice last night after carving out the new canyon). So I think I'll spend the day installing that new curved viaduct that I've been threatening for the past month, and planning a highway overcrossing for the yard that has no town to serve. Yah, I know, MORE bridges! Almost everytime I find a piece of straight track, I have to put a bridge under it. Think I should talk to a professional about it? Hmm----
Later. Have a great day, guys.

Evening all

Well, still waiting for the parts to be dispatched - placed one of the orders about 4 weeks back, emailed them to enquire what had happened and found they'd managed to miss the parts order out of their weekly order to the supplier. I'll have to wait rather than ordering elsewhere though - very few places have this stuff. Ah well, they'll turn up eventually!

Capt_Turk, I'd really not advise putting the G scale on top of the RV - this from a fellow enthusiast (we have a 22ft Hymer A class). Having said that dad climbs on the roof from scaffolding sometimes to wash it, so it must be fairly strong! Have a few good stories from taking it to France last year, mainly concerned with campsite owners who failed to realise that a 22-footer will not fit in the same space as a tent...

John, yup, we're seeing the "nobody fails" culture here too - we now have some truly daft degree-level courses opening up (read this week about someone doing a PhD in Charlton Heston...), and they seem willing to take anyone. The result is a real shortage of "skilled trades" such as plumbers, electricians, plasterers etc - there seems to be a view that everyone should be going to university regardless of whether it is right for them or not. Dad worked in a Further Ed college for over 10 years (he now inspects post-16 govt-funded training) and gets really riled by media reports that imply the only way to success is a degree - I agree with him on this one.

Luc, coffee shop had been moved back to the normal slot by the time I got here, I have a little 350HP 0-6-0 diesel switcher we can keep on standby to move it about if necessary - Bachmann OO scale Class 08, these were one of the few locos that Ed Burkhardt (sp?, chief exec of Wisconsin Central when they took over most of our freight operations as "EWS") reckoned were worth keeping - top speed of 15mph but can move a full-loaded train of container flats. Mine's in the green and yellow "Freightliner" livery, so it should be easy to spot in the yard!

Well, nothing much happening here, currently making plans for tomorrow evening - mum and dad are going to a "Murder Mystery" party with some friends - basically they all go in costume and work through a script. They've done these for local hotels before as part of the local amateur theatre group, though this is just a social one. Expecting to be called at 1am and asked to collect them - thought it was supposed to be the other way around?[:D]

Brian - Some memories remain forever - guess that's why they are called memories! I'm sure he has some great and vivid ones, as I do. In '57 at the time of his Jamboree, I was probably being bounced around in the north Atlantic ocean like a cork in a washing machine. A far cry from living in a tent .......

Last time I visited the Irvine Ranch property - I couldn't recognize it at all. It is SO developed and hardly resembled what one would call a ranch and that was back in the late 1980's. "Progress" - ah yes .......

I used to take in more than a couple of Angels games back in 1986-88 - had great fun at the park - loved the night games! As you might guess - the Cardinals are who I root for and I'm always hoping for a miracle to happen for the Kansas City Royals! Speaking of the Royals - now there's a great place to watch a night game. What a pleasure it is to watch baseball there.

Hmmmmmm - nothing about trains in these comments!===============================================

John - Sure, I'll give it a try - what's the question?

We're going to be in Bedford in early May - arriving by train (of course!) and departing the same way. As usual, we were able to book the Budd consist of the "Ocean." Really am NOT impressed with the Euro Renaissance equipment and avoid it whenever possible for overnight trips.

Two hours from Bedford - sounds interesting. I'll send you an e-mail as the date draws closer.

Hmm, not sure about the BN colours on an 08 - though it would brighten up the plain grey ones! Bought mine from one of Hatton's bargain offers - my brother has one of the EWS ones (you wouldn't believe the hassle we had tracking one down - none of the mail order advertisers had any left, eventually got one in Shrewsbury). I'd quite like to fit DCC and lights to it though I see the chassis block needs a fair bit of "hacking" to get the decoder and lighting in. On the other hand, judging by how it runs on DC it would be the slowest runner out there with a BEMF decoder fitted!

I thank all for the supportive comments you’ve given me. I’ve been looking around and found a free Railroad design program for the computer(if I could only figure out how to work it), so I’m going to try playing with the track a little. My plan is to probably keep the bench work close to if not exactly the same, as All I have is 3 4x8 sheets, two in a square and one branching off from the other two. And that I’m pretty much stuck with, unless I want to make it smaller. But, if I do anything it won’t be for a while, so I’ll let you know if I do anything.

Anyway, I better run, I got things to do, it’s Friday you know......

Noah: I used the Atlas track design proagram and after playing with it I still found doodling the way to go. There has been some excellent articles in MR that discussed people using cardboard mock ups. Before CAD ships were designed and drawn up in lofts using a system called Lofting. Get your hands on some big sheets of craft paper and let your imagination wonder. Have some fun!

Steve: You have brought warmth to my heart as nothing makes me feel as good inside as a ditched diesel! Well Done old man! Though a Steam Engine would so much nicer spanning the span!

Der John and Luc: So when are ya coming over? Let me know as I have to clean the place up. Amazing what havoc I can wreak within a day! John you're right this is an easy hobby; easily frustrated, easily distracted, easily angered, easily swayed, easily going down the drain into oblivion.

Well boys and girls it's been a long arduous day as I've had decoder problems, which has resulted in one dead soldier and a loss of hair. the Fleet now stands at six (4 sound and 2 with decoders) only 18 left to "modernize". I may be ridding myself of surplus.

The MESS has it's first Loco, which is not pink and sports the MESS's Gold Leaf and Red Herald. No. 601 4-6-6-4.... Horaaaah!

Jimbo: I have you in my sights son! Of course this means....

Hi all,and I see Paul and Phil are on.
Can’t stay long, because it is getting close to ST time, but I thought I would put this up on the bullentin board over there, and I hope I haven’t messed the forum up with this. Some of the people that have been here for a while will understand this, and I am sure will explain it to the newbies. Does it remind you of anyone[?][?]

A man goes into a store and asks the clerk for some "Polish Sausage".
The clerk looked at him and asked, "Are you Polish?"

The guy, clearly offended, says, "Well, yes I am. But let me ask you
some things. If I asked you for Italian Sausage, would you ask me if I
was Italian? Or, if I asked you for German Bratwurst, would you ask me
if I was German? Or if I asked you for a Kosher Hot Dog, would you ask
me if I was Jewish? Or if I asked you for a Taco, would ask me if I was
a Mexican? Would ya, huh? Would ya?

The clerk says, "Well no."

"And if I asked you for some Irish Whiskey, would you ask me if I was
Irish? What about Canadian Bacon, would you ask me if I was Canadian?"

"Well I probably wouldn't", said the clerk.

With self-indignation, the guy says, "Well, all right then, why did you
ask me if I'm Polish just because I asked for Polish Sausage?"

The clerk replies, "Because you're at Home Depot."

Just had to do it [}:)][:D][;)]

Talk to you later

Hi All; Just a short one to mark my spot. If I don't I'll never be able to catch up on things. Only worked 8 hours today. That gives me about 54 for the week so far. If I can get through two more days I get a couple days off.

well I went to storage today and anly a small portion of our Normal stuff was in there.... I didn't know we had 3 Bachmann 4-4-0's in there.... oh well... other than that the HO stuff was not in there except for one tank car that has rusted trucks and a couple of Southern Pacific Big Rig Trailers.... well that and a bunch of brass track.... so my dream of selling stuff on ebay and making some money for my layout.

Oh Well That's Life.... other than that the bachmann stuff seems to be in good condition for being like 15 years old.... just one of the loco's is missing it's traction part of one of the wheels.... also had 3 old time passenger cars from that set as well.

Well I'm off for now.... see you all later.

well drinks are on me.... darn and I needed that money for my layout.... oh well.... LOL

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers

Weather continues nice down here in Paradise. Mostly cloudy, probably mid-70’s for most of the day, cooling off nicely now. My string on non-air conditioning days continues to grow. [^]

You can stop worrying about the supply of Orange Juice and fresh fruit. We went back out to the grove today and loaded up again. I really enjoy spending a few hours out there. Brought back another 20 liters of fresh squeezed juice and a few hundred oranges. [:D]

And on the smoothie front, today’s experiment was banana – mango – orange. Really turned out nice. This was the wife’s favorite to date. Mangos are just starting to come into season down here. They’re actually my favorite fruit. I spiked my smoothie with Bacardi Solera, of course. Ah yes, blender drinks. [C=:-)]

I see the CIPP (“Correctness In Posting” Police) are out again complaining about poor spelling and bad grammar. [:(] I suppose it was overdue, it had been more than a month since the last rant. Yesterday it was complaining about the young guy who misspelled diseasel. Okay, he butchered the spelling, but it was obvious what he was talking about.

Cute cats, Tom, glad you posted the photos on your website. Furry dudes, aren’t they?

QUOTE: attaboy: Ed, the guy has a pretty nice tan except where he used to wear a speedo. Do you wear speedos?
Are you kidding me? With this gut? [:0]

QUOTE: TrolleyRob: *** and Ed have you guys thought of building yourself a crawler for under your layouts. It would save your knees…
This makes me think you haven’t seen the picture of me wiring my layout. It’s called “Easy wiring for old guys”, here it is:

When your layout is small and light enough to flip up on its side to work on, you don't need a crawler. The only thing I have to get down on my hands and knees for is to find lost parts. Attaboy, now do you see why I don’t wear a speedo? [(-D]

QUOTE: (northern)Phil: Anyone hear from Lawrence recently?
Nope. I just assumed he was real busy with work. I know he traveled a lot.

QUOTE: … when the quake hit, then I realized it was just ED saying he thought about Horribly Oversized if he had more room…
Hey now, that was purely theoretical musings. I’ll have you know I’m a card carrying N scaler. [:)]

We’re already using the roof of the in-law’s house for space for a few dozen of Fran’s potted plants, and there is a small ‘bridge’ between their roof and our terrace!

No, you weren’t the only one who was unaware of the forum’s automatic censoring software. I wonder if that’s why a lot of B.S.’s posts had a lot of asterisks? I just assumed he was making a poor attempt at disguising his swearing. [swg]

Brian, waiting to hear what you found in the storage unit. Hope you found your old HO stuff to sell.

QUOTE: Grubby: The heat is fading but still too hot to wear clothes.... if only they would change those laws, we could all be so much more comfortable in Summer....
I prefer cold weather, you can always get warm by adding another sweater. When it’s hot it doesn’t matter how much clothing you take off, you don’t get cooler (without a/c).

QUOTE: Fergie: Dad heard & watched the Challenger in action yesterday and asked if "we" should get the 2-10-4 next? He was smiling like a Cheshire cat watching that puppy (He's in his 80's).
And you said…??? I’m sure it won’t take much arm twisting to get you convinced to do something that will provide so much pleasure to dear old Dad! [:D]

QUOTE: Duke: Does it remind you of anyone?
With initials B.S. or P.L.? Am I close?

Paul, hopefully you’ll get a break soon. When does the park open for the season?

Well I think that about gets me up to date. Hope you all have a good evening and hope to see you all tomorrow.

Hasta mañana,

Ed

please see the post directly above yours.... I didn't find hardly anything in there at all.... something tells me that the rest either got thrown away, still lost in storage, or just plain old misplaced.... probably by one of my eldest brothers durggy friends back a couple years ago.

Well I'm off to browse the forum again.

Good evening everybody: I’ll have just a small tea please Chloe, as despite the walk after dinner (scallop stirfry with sesame oil and ginger) the sugars were too high…too much of the banana and yogurt dessert I guess[V]

Possible language barrier. Sheet of gypsum sandwiched in thick paper, goes on the timber framework to make a finished wall? If so, it’s drywall in Canada, and Sheetrock in the US. Grubby or Mitchell, what’s it called in Oz?

That’s a thought, thanks for the invite. It will need planning and logistics and who knows what all else. I’m in town for a dental appointment Monday p.m., and could probably stay in for an evening visit. That may be too soon. What do you think Luc?

Small rock casting casting is going ahead in the bathroom, a new batch went in the molds just before I came to the shop. I figure if I can do three batches a day for a year or two I should have enough to start hiding the blue foam mountains[(-D]
Anyway, time to call it a night. Email just came on as I was typing that it is still down.[yeah] Ed, I saw you had sent something, but it isn’t there now. Please resend. I’ve got the car all packed up in the box the GFI came in from the hardware store.[:D]
Goodnight, and God Bless.
