Busy weekend.

Put together some Athearn kits and covered the boy's layouts with the Woodlands ready grass vinyl mats. Hopefully next week I with post the pics.

One of my bands had two "gigs" this weekend. Saturday we helped a youth group fini***heir 30 hour fast with a concert. (Trying to keep their minds off the fact that they where hungry) It was part of a 30 hour famine fund drive. Sunday, we lead worship at a rescue mission in Philly.

Plus two baseball games and a birthday party.

Now I'm getting ready for a trip that starts tomorrow.

Well I hope your weekends were much more restful. I'll try to stop by tomorrow AM before Ieave, if not, have a good week. See you on Friday.

Ed and Fran are on there way to Teffy's. We all had breakfast together and than came back to our place to ride the 7.5 in. After that we went over to Terry McGrath's track and Wayne Davis had his steam locomotive fired up so we had a nice ride behind that. Then as all good things must come to an end they left for Dallas and the Big Boy. Mary Ann and I really enjoyed having them here. I may have put some ideas into Ed's head. Like maybe a 7.5in in the orange grove to haul the oranges. I can just picture a locomotive like my Sara coming out of the grove pulling a couple of cars loaded with oranges.

It's getting late, being that I have to go to work tomorrow.

I don't see why a rock handle wouldn't work, should be fine.

As to the tree handle, the first one I made was one dead tree in a grove of live ones. It didn't look quite right as it looked a little out of place. I suppose I could have scattered around a few more dead ones to help it fit in, but I was still a bit green to scenery modeling, so I soldiered on, vowing I'd do better next time. The second time, I had one in a grove of dead trees. I just made the handle tree a little taller then the rest and gave it just a touch of "breathing room". Looked pretty darned good.

…and here’s looking the other way. The dark grey area will be toned down but it’s where a wharf building will go. At that point the layout edge is a wharf.

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE TWO DUCK HUNTERS FROM WISCONSIN?
ABSOLUTELY A TRUE STORY HEARD ON A WISCONSIN RADIO STATION REPORTING ON THE
INCIDENT.

A guy buys a new Lincoln Navigator for $42,500.00 (with monthly payments of
$560.00). He and a friend go duck hunting in mid-winter; and of course all
of the lakes are frozen. These two guys go on a lake with their GUNS, a DOG,
and of course the new NAVIGATOR.

They decide they want to make a natural looking water area for the ducks,
something for the decoys to float on.

Now making a hole in the ice large enough to invite a passing duck, is going
to take a little more power than the average drill auger can produce. So,
out of the back of the new Navigator comes a stick of dynamite with a short
40 second-fuse. Now our two Rocket Scientists,afraid they might slip on the
ice while trying to run away after lighting the fuse (and becoming toast,
along with the Navigator), decide on the following course of action: they
light the 40 second fuse; then, with a mighty thrust, they throw the stick
of dynamite as far away as possible.

Remember a couple of paragraphs back when I mentioned the NAVIGATOR, the
GUNS, and the DOG...???

Let's talk about the dog: A highly trained Black Lab used for RETRIEVING.
Especially things thrown by the owner. You guessed it: the dog takes off
across the ice at a high rate of speed and grabs the stick of dynamite, with
the burning 40-second fuse, just as it hits the ice.

The two men swallow, blink, start waving their arms and, with veins in their
necks swelling to resemble stalks of rhubarb, scream and holler at the dog
to stop. The dog, now apparently cheered on by his master, keeps coming. One
hunter panics, grabs the shotgun and shoots the dog. The shotgun is loaded
with #8 bird shot, hardly big enough to stop a Black Lab. The dog stops for a moment, slightly confused then continues on. Another shot, and this time the dog, still standing, becomes really confused and of course terrified, thinks these two geniuses have gone insane. The dog takes off to find cover, under the brand new Navigator. The men continue to scream as they run. The red hot exhaust pipe on the truck touches the dogs rear end, he yelps, drop the dynamite under the truck and takes off after his master.

Then """"""""""BOOOOOOOOOOOOM""""""""""!!!!

The truck is blown to bits and sinks to the bottom of the lake, leaving the
two idiots standing there with "I can't believe this just happened" looks on
their faces.

The insurance company says that sinking a vehicle in a lake by illegal use
of explosives is NOT COVERED by the policy.

...And he still had yet to make the first of those $560.00 a! month
payments...The dog is okay...

Hey everyone! Just thought I would stop in and say Hi and also Happy Birthday to the Coffee Shop! 2 years (and 1 day [:D])! I can't belive it!

Currently I am working on purchasing a Gauge 1 Ruby 0-4-0 live steam engine, doing lots of research and stuff. From all the reviews I have read and the people I have talked to, it seems to be a great engine and I am going to go ahead and buy the kit soon. I plan on converting it to a 2-4-0 or 2-4-2, I have'nt decided yet. I will keep you posted!

Mornin all, coffee Janie please, I see they got the place cleaned up from the party.
Rained all night here, and suppose to be this way thur Tues. and rain again Thur., so it’ll be a fun week. Only plans for are to spend some more time in the train room and watch the Nascar race on TV, along with the normals of everyday.

Grayfox , we have a lot of deer round here, even in the yard at times. My biggest problem I think for this year is going to rabbits getting into the garden and flowerbeds.

John , liked the way your hiding the hatch handle. May try your stipple idea.

Noah , doesn’t seem like derailments happen at the most in opportune times, they do here. Looking forward for some more pics.

Sorry I haven't been in here much this weekend, been very busy with scenery work and my 13yr-old son's Confirmation.

Ryan - I'll try to post some pix of that styrene roadbed painted with the River Rock (BTW I lightened it with white so it would have more of a 'bleached' appearance like most asphalt roads).

Chuck - thanx for the kind words about the propane depot. We've got a cat, but she always can't make up her mind whether she wants in or out - regardless of the weather! Hope you and Kathy are 'maintaining', healthwise...

Hi Gang: We just dropped Ed and Fran off at the motel. We had a great day looking at the 7.5in railroads and at my HO. Ed says it's nice to be able to see the trains with out a magnifier. I think that Fran is going to do the trees for Ed's layout. I gave Ed a piece of furnace filter and Fran figured out that it was for trees right away. I've got to give her a couple of bags of ground foam to go with the filter. We're going to meet for breakfast in the morning and if I can talk them into it we'll take a ride on the 7.5. Ed wants to get to Dallas and see the Big Boy at the state fair grounds in Dallas. We came out OK with the storms last night. They went north of us and we didn't get any additional rain. Oh yea, the trains on the HO ran without any problems except I noticed that the 2-8-0 on the inside track slowed down on the back side of the layout. I may have some problems with bad rail joints. I really need to put feeders to each section of track. Well it's late and I'm pooped. I'll say Good Night and I'll see you all tomorrow.

Oh, so this is to be a mostly bare rock face. I get it. See, I model Maine, and while they do have rock faces, theres usually a ton of trees around too, so I work that in.

When I need a tree for a special purpose like the handle idea, I usually make one from twisted wire and leave extra long "roots" on it to go through the scenery and then spread out so that it is VERY firmly planted. I've done this on two or three hatches in the past and it works pretty good. It doesn't look like a handle but it's durable enough to work well.

Hey guys,

Well, I'm back from my first day of the show. I haven't had a chance to get many shots yet of my module or the rest of the layout, hopefully that will come tomorrow. I have had a chance though to get a shot of my first big derailment:

I was driving the WSOR locomoves in this shot (the red locos). A guy running in front of me had lost the rear half of his ore train without knowing it, and I wasn't over there to see it. Infact, no one was. So I'm sitting there watching the Power round the corner, and just when it gets out of my veiw it stops. I cut the power, head over, and what do I find but this mess (sorry Fergie!)! I ran into the rear of the cars, and they were weighted enough to pu***he power off the track, but not before I moved the string. The slack caused a few of the cars on the bridge at the top of the picture to derail, and they shoved right into the side of the steam photo freight running by on the other main. It was mess alright! I got before the standing board of inquiry tomorrow, and I better hope I can keep my job!

I’ve been working on a section of the layout that doesn’t matter too much if I goof up. So I’m experimenting with ways of doing things.
Here’s a textured ground cover of stipple, latex paint and wood ash. You can’t see the texture in this photo. Maybe this one shows the difference between the rough and the smoothed out roadway beyond the tracks.
Then I cut drainage ditches all along the section I was working on, plus the main line behind it. Some of those do show in the photo foreground.
After that I cut the sides of a couple of unconnected foam beams that carry the track to make slopes, and filled in the spaces between them with masking tape so that I can fill in with the sawdust/glue mix tomorrow. Looks like I have to press that tape down better at the seams!
I’ve been looking in my Railimages for a shot of those beams “before”. As far as I can tell, I took everything else around there but that!
TV program I want to see in 25 mins. “New Tricks”, do you know it UKMatt?, Steve? We’ve been watching for some weeks now and really enjoy it.

Good evening everyone, just got in from a full day outside , working on the blueberry posts, netting, fertilzing, etc., and none too soon. We just say a buck, a doe and three young deer near the garden. They like to eat new buds on plants, but luckily the deer netting on the sides not only serves to keep out the birds, but deer as well. We nver had this many deer around here, in fact, I never saw a deer at all here in Central Mass until about 8 years ago. I think it is due to dogs now having to be restrained, not running loose, and, not as many people hunting as in days of olde.

CAPE JIM When I was a boy, we lived in an old mill house with hardly any yard at all, so no room to grow a garden. I loved blueberries, so I would travel the woods and fields of home and bring back a gallon or two about every three days when they were in season. Now, we have about 3 cleared acres behind the house ( ask DUKE, he was there last Summer ) so I have planted 28 bushes. Is there anything any better in the morning than bluebserries on your cereal?

CHUCK Good to see that you folks are seeing some sun out there in the far Northwest in the Subtropical rain forest. I see you have four 4-footed meteorologists also....very handy to have around when the power goes out. LOL
