The more you are able to ignore the immature soap opera that is High School, the better off you are when it ends and you step in to the real world.  We have several new interns at work and "its like, omy gawd, so totaly yesterday" and they drive their bosses insane.  In one years time it will be "Like getting fired was totaly unfair, i mean gawd."

Get my feeling?  Ignore it, stick to what you like.  Doing so may make getting a prom date tough, but hey, I did it and I am the biggest geek I know, then and now.

Hi, all, Christmas party here at work today so things are more relaxed than usual.

Dick, I've been around, just not posting much due to dialup frustration.  I do most of my reading here at work.  Sometimes I can post from here and sometimes I can't, depends on how cooperative our security system is being.  SSA is extremely paranoid about computer security.  Once my broadband is up and running next Friday I will be around more regularly.

One thing I forgot to mention last time for claymore/Dave, now that you are in Maryland you will have to go to the Great Scale Model Train Show at the Timonium fair grounds.  The next show is February 3-4.  There are four shows a year.  The October and February shows are the best, more vendors and customers.  Some of us have met there in person.  I met Cary(Duce) and KenL there about a year or so ago.  Ken hangs out at the forum across the street mostly now but still pops in here from time to time.  Check out the web site at www.gsmts.com .

See you later.

Good morning to one and all!  The power went out sometime between 1:00a.m. and 3:00 a.m. along about 80 miles of our coast.  It wasn’t weather related, “a transmission problem” (Well, Yes!, Hello!)   They said at 3:10 that it would be back on at 4:45, then at 6 they said it would be back on at 8, then at 8 they said 9.  8:35 we got power, just as I had fixed up Ellen’s “emergency” water breaker so she could do her teeth, etc. Good thing we have the wood stove, got the house warm from 6:30, and breakfast tea made.

Had more good news on the mrr front yesterday.  The Atlas 100 ton trucks and “Accumate” couplers I ordered in the spring have finally been produced, and are in Toronto.  They should be here in time for Christmas.

OZJim:  Sorry to hear you have the ‘flu.  If you haven’t had that before, to the human race!

MDDave et al: Fascinating about all this high tech electronics stuff.  I don’t understand more than about one word in ten, but you never know when a light will go on, and a workable idea will come.  I did at least figure that the load had to be split on that 15 amp draw through the dimmer…Hope that day surgery thing for you M-I-L goes well.Angel [angel]

JR:

Shouldn't be too hard to find a place for a short line a couple of scale miles long.

Let’s see, 5280 x 2 =10560. Divide by 160 = 66.  Shouldn’t be too hard to find an extra 66 feet of running space in my 12 x 16 room!

Ryan:

Der John, good news on your research findings about the short line to the saw mill. It is fun too learning about the past and prototype operations for your modeling research.
…or it will be when I can get into Halifax with enough time to go to the Archives.

That won’t be until the new year, I expect.

Colby: Have a good one!

Jeff:  I hope the back is some better this morning.

Dick: Your font is slipping again!   Mercy!

SlappyMike:

i just found out today that if i dont bring up my grades, i have to got to a "Alternitive Learning Center".

what the hell does that mean??

…Don’t know exactly, but it doesn’t sound like an attractive career path. (I see MDDave has pointed this out already) …Crack those books old son, however unpleasant it may appear… and ask questions if you don’t understand.  I didn’t, and have always regretted it. THERE ARE NO DUMB QUESTIONS.  The teacher’s job is to teach, take advantage of it.

Fergie:  I didn’t think of your dad when the Narwalk thing was on the news. That is difficult. Let’s hope they get on top of it PDQ…and now Lisa’s mother…prayers for you allAngel [angel]

Good news on the renovations. The weather isn’t hurting that project either, eh?

Looking forward to looking at the helicopter videos, if I can get them to download on this dial up.

KirbyvilleRob: Good to see you back here again! Bad luck on the house fire.  Good thing there was no one there! Pity about the mags and other stuff.  It is just stuff, though when all is said and done.  Kris is downstairs sorting out Christmas decorations.  She’s decided that we really don’t need so much.  I’d not given it any thought, but, you know, she’s right, even though there are memories attached to some of it.

Attaboy:  No chance of cable here, and the line of sight thing doesn’t work for a towered solution either, and any rate for us on the island. That’s why broadband over power line makes so much sense to me, but other people just can’t get their heads in that space.Banged Head [banghead]

Yeah, Don, but nowadays it’s mostly C++ with assembly subroutines/API’s to make calls to, I think. Lisp is “so 20th century...” as I think the trendies would say. Wink [;)] Oh, if you really want to pay for this round, maybe Claymore/Dave would let you - just ask him nice and all. Laugh [(-D]

Jeff, good to hear you’re feeling better - but don’t overdo it today. You may still want to consider that doctor’s visit.

JR, I was wondering where those chips and sockets were coming from on the corner table. Don’t want the Shop to be confused for a local Radio Shack store, right? Wink [;)]

Tonight’s my on-call for this month, so hoping that “all is calm, all is bright...” (if I might use a seasonal phrase). But tomorrow is FRIDAY!

It never fails, always around the holidays.  Do you have a roof to stay under tonight?  Its a big of a haul, but we have room here in MD!

I am making the assumption that every person made it out alright since the top of the fatality list was MRR mags?

Regardless, mine and my family's prayers are with you and yours.

<cringes painfully>  I'm really really sorry.  I guess it could be worse.  You could have been in the house instead of the old MRR issues.

GMT, I am a bit of a neat freak, so it wouldn't happen again, no worries!  Looks like I need to put on the Neat-Police hat:)

PA-BELT:  I was in High School a little over a decade ago and so I still remember what its like.  Its very difficult for teenagers nowadays to see anything beyond highschool, and even when they do, the thought process usually only goes as far as college!

Having been through the system pretty recently, I can honestly tell you that grades matter... but not for what you may think.  Grades will get your resume looked at by an employer and get you in the door to a job.  Once there your existing skills, intelligence and eagerness to learn the job will keep you that job.  Skills and intelligence are, in part, aquired while you endeavor to get good grades, while the eagerness to learn the job can be forced, but usually comes easily if you are doing something you find interesting.

Grades are the gateway to that high paying job that you are after.  Do the best you can, don't be afraid to talk to parents and educators about how to get better.  Socialization is important, but never prioritize being popular over your education.  I just went back for my 10 year reunion and heres what I saw:  All the 'popular-ites' where married, fat, had kids, had low paying jobs and still lived in the same little town they graduated highschool from.  All the others who put their efforts into their education left town, finished college, have decent to well paying jobs that they love, some were married and happy others were single and happy.... the split was phenominal.  Trust those on this thread when they say that Highschool is THE MOST IMPORTANT time in your education.

Being a teacher for 5 years, I can honestly say this:  Some people just can't learn from books and classroom enviornments.  Its ashame to see these intelligent people fail because the teachers can't figure out the students learning style.  But if I ever had a choice of working with someone who breezed through school with little effort and landed a 4.0 or someone who busted their *** 24/7 for 4 years straight and pulled a 2.9 average.... I would pick the 2.9 person anyday because they know what a work ethic is.

Don't be lazy, bust your *** and do the best that you possibly can (with as much help as you need) and I gurantee Life will deal you a pretty decent hand.

Good Morning All,

Damp and dark out - if I owned an Indian weather forcasting stone I couldn't do a forecast cause I couldn't find it in the murk. Nonetheless, I'll have a regular coffee and a donut please.

Dick - of your entire list the only thing I am supposedly allowed was the blessed carrot stick!

Jeff - Hope you're feeling better today and that if not, you see the doc asap.

PA(Slappy) - You go to school to get an education. You get an education so you can get a job when you finish school. The only proof you did either will be your grades and diploma. Here the alternate school is not for discipline problems - we have two other programs for them. A proper alternate school is for those that don't fit in with the regular format i.e. a round peg the system is trying to pound into a square hole. We graduate 75% of our alternate students and most of them go on to college. That said, you are better off buckling down and raising your grades in a regular classroom setting because most mainstream high schools have a wider range of courses than the alternates. Make an appointment to visit(revisit) your guidance counselor with your parent(s). Pin down what the issues are and work to eliminate them.  It is easy to get caught up in everything unimportant at school - you need to look out for yourself and  your own best interests and worry about the rest later.

Fergie - Actual work on the home improvements ! We're impressed. Best wishes and prayers for your MIL and Dad. Just think - someday you'll see your train layout again.

Good evening gents, it is an insane 47F here now at 11:15pm, on December 13th, and we had 10+ Robins in the back yard....in all my 67+ years, I have never seen anything like this in mid December here in New England....we defintely have Global Warming. I may even have to cut the grass if it gets any longer!!! 72 degrees north latitude? Cut grass in December??

JEFF: Maybe a mud bath would help, they seem to have healing powers so many have said.

DAVE: COBOL.....that brings back some memories of college course back in 1968..COmmon Business Orientated Language. C++ is what my friend now developes programs in.

ATTABOY: Good to see you again in the CS, where have you been? You like those eatin rules for the holidays huh?

FERGIE: It just doesn't stop for you does it??? At least the project is moving ahead, and the weather is holding so far. We will add Lisa's mom to our prayers..... and hopefully dad will be home for Christmas.

Time to hit the sack...see you guys in the morning,

Evening all,

Just figured I'd pop in to introduce myself & say hi.

A little background;

Mid 30s, just re-entering the hobby after a 15 year hiatus.........

BIIIIGGGGGG CPR fan.......which is handy, 'cause I spend about 8 1/2 hours a day within 250 feet of their Minnedosa sub in Manitoba.

Gonna be modelling CP's Minnedosa sub in HO. I've got a 14'x 22' room to start off in, with an adjacent 14'x16' room to expand into. I figure to start out with 26"-32" wide benchwork on 2 sides (with temporary return loops at each end) and try to reasonably complete a section before staring the next (you know, so I don't spend half a year on benchwork, then another on trackwork, and so on..........). I'm working out my track plan right now, and gettin' a little excited about it, too, I don't mind telling you......

I've got 10 locos at this point, almost exclusively Athearn, and about 40 peices of rolling stock, so when I say I'm just getting rolling, well.........

Anyhoo, I'll be in here a lot, trying to benefit from the experience of others, so to speak, and I look forward to talking with alla y'all.

Chloe, I'll have a hot fudge sundae, please, and a cup of coffee, please. Hopefully, I won't get the TOP again (PC, if I do, I didn't do it on purpose - I promise I didn't!) Shock [:O] Evil [}:)]

Jeff, you better have your doctor check things out. Don't mess around with trying to do too much until you find out or get things fixed up, okay?  We'd like you to be around for a while.

LilRob (TexasRailNut) - good to hear from you, but definitely sorry to hear about losing the stuff. I hope no one was hurt in the fire (it's bad enough to lose the stuff!). And a belated Happy B-Day [bday] - stay in touch, okay? We will be praying for you and your family. Angel [angel]Angel [angel]

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] what Attaboy said, PA - work on pulling up those grades, 'cause an alternative school here is pretty much what he described in his area. There, you probably will have other students who will interfere with your studying, so you do not want to be there. As Attaboy said, your grades now can help how things go for you later on (good or bad). Study up (for your sake, not ours), okay?

And good to see you back, Attaboy - whatcha been doing while you've been away, fella? Fill us in, please. Yeah, I'm sure if you had broadband in the past, it'll all come back really quick once you get it installed. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] That sure is frustrating, to be that close to those other places with broadband(!)...

Fergie, that is some chopper, all right! You got one of those on your Christmas list, do you? Wink [;)]

Not much new to report myself; still waiting on those eBay items. I guess if they get here next week, I can just put them under the tree and call 'em Christmas presents? (Ho, ho, ho?)

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Evening all, thought I would drop in for a cup of hot chocolate before bed.

Cape Jim and der, I had cable broadband before moving here so I know what I'm missing.  That is part of what make it so frustrating and annoying.  I also live just about 15 miles straight line distance from the state capital building in Harrisburg.  Everyone in the surrounding areas has had broadband service for years.  We just got DSL this past summer and of course cable broadband is being connected now.  I think Embarq pushed DSL through to try to get people signed up before the cable was done.

Happy B-Day [bday], Colby, enjoy the celebration.

Jeff, take care of yourself, no need to push too hard now, you're retired remember? Big Smile [:D]

Dick, how are those rules for eating during the holidays different from the rest of the year?  I eat like that all the time. Big Smile [:D]  I think that's why my doctor gave up on me.  There was story in I think it was Fortune magazine a while back on rules for living after retirement.  The premise was that our goal is to go face down in a 12 oz. steak at the age of 90.  Don't know if I'll make it to 90 but I have a good chance of going face down in some sort fattening food. Big Smile [:D]

PA, if altenative schoo there is like it is here, its where they put all the "problem" students.  You don't want to be there.  Just study harder and get your grades up, it will affect the rest of your life.

Guess that's about  it for tonight.  See you all later.

The last time I heard about COBOL (professionally) was in the mid 80's. Fortran and C were what I cut my teeth on, then I discovered Apple's ASM assembler and it really snowballed from there. After a while I was showing the teachers things THEY didn't know.

Hey all,

I haven't been around for awhile. I've been busy, with the move and all.

Well, my old house (the one I showed y'all before, by the tracks), it caught fire this evening (around 4:00 pm, CST). Most of my MR mags were still in it. More than likely, they are burnt pages. I'll update y'all about it later. We still had other stuff as well in it.

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to all the newbies. Happy B-Day [bday] to those who had them, including myself (Dec. 2nd).

Catch up with y'all later,

LilRob
