Good Morning Coffee Shoppers! Zoe, I'd like one of Bill T.'s donuts and a JR coffee, please.

Dave, if you wait a day or so, you should get some rain. We started last night with rain, and it's supposed to become pretty much continuous by tonight before ending tomorrow. So it's probably on its way to those of those of you east of me.

DerJohn, I think that toilet seat takes 'togetherness' a bit too far. Shock [:O] You guys won't mind if I use it alone, will you? (Got! to call up and ask those plumbers...)

I'll be heading out for now. Will check back later and see who's come by then. Everyone keep yourselves safe and good luck finishing up your remaining preparations for Christmas.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good Morning All,

A little more like winter this morning - frost on the windshield. No flurries that were mentioned, as a possibility but at least it's colder. I mean really why suffer through mosquito season here if we are not going to have all four seasons.

Spent the evening at the museum working on the HO exhibit. We're nearly operational and I've now put in the rest of the trackage for the roundhouse and yard. Made an axel storage track that is for two rows interwoven so the axels take up less space. next will painting ties and rail, then ballast.

Derjohn - what you need is to borrow someones helmet cam or figure out how to shoulder mount the video camera. Ours has a swing out panel so you can set up the shot and see where you are going at the same time. Handy when you're walking near the edge.

Lilrob - It would be nce if you can salvage stuff, but as PC has said, we can help especially in the magazine department. we get so many magazines donated at the museum that they just put the duplicates in a "free box" by the library door. Lots of Model Railroader  and occasionally  others. When you get the chance let us know what you need.

Jerry - Too bad the auction didn't work out. We haven't been through the N scale stuff yet so I don't know what will be surplus, but I'll keep you in mind. We seem to have boxes and boxes of HO tyco and LL cars and power. We're all manuvering for the unbuilt Athearn and Walthers kits. Cleaning up last night I found a few boxes of old steel sided Athearn boxcar kits. Most are in bad shape and are at best described as pre weathered.

Dick - I had no end of trouble with my passenger cars uncoupling especially those with three axel trucks. I changed all the couplers to Kaydees', checked heights and for binding with no luck. It is hard to get fore and aft deflection without loosening the trucks up so the cars stagger like drunken sailors (it's ok guys - i'm ex navy remember). I finally changed all the couplers to horn hook and no more issues. now all I need is an old Atlas uncoupler track for my passenger yard and I'm laughing. At any rate if you uncouple in only one spot it's got to be the track and check for elevation changes there. If it is always on car of the set, check the deflection and overhang on curves/switches. If nothing is obvious, dig into your junk box and get those trusty NMRA spec couplers out.

Time to get on with it here at work. Hope you all have a good day.   Cheers, J.R.

Ah, top of the page. Breakfast is on me! Todays' menu includes blueberry pancakes, link sausage, home fries, fresh fruit, eggs your way with whole wheat, sourdough, or rye bread and the ever popular SOS or chipped beef on toast with gravy for you civilian types ( a great delicacy ).

Ah I love the rain.  Problem is we aren't getting any here today!  Perhaps I should move to Washington state eh?

High of 48 here, looks and feels a bit more like Christmas!

I'll take a bacon and egg sammich please Zoe!

The forums haven't been as busy as of late, is that because of the holiday season or is this pretty typical?

Good Morning from Ohio,

I just got in from boarding a boat down at the Port Authority, my last one until next shipping season.  I see CSX does all the local switching on third trick so I wandered around the area a little bit to see what was going on.  Sorry none of the pictures came out, the headlights on the locomotives were way to bright for the camera.

Yeah, it's about sack time for me too. I had a busy day today. Only two of us in the shop today, but we still got 45 boxes done today, and that's really good!

Good evening gents, I see it has been a fairly quiet day in the CS, I guess everyone is out either Christmas shopping or partying. I have been trying to find out why the passenger cars get decoupled at one spot on the alyout around the tree. I switched the positions of the cars to see if it was one coupler on one car, but now the 1st car is having trouble in the same spot. The track seems fine, the coupler isn't hitting the ties, I can only assume that little Leprichans are at work here.

PAUL: What a crazy season for weather in December. You are way down in Texas and have ice and snow, we are way up here at 72.5North Latitude and we have green grass and are about to set the record for the warmest December on record, and no snow, not a trace. We saw a few flakes in the air a few weeks ago, but that was it. 27F right now at 11:40pm on December 19th.....normally we would be about 15F and have a foot of snow on the ground here in the hills. I totally agree with you re ice on the interstate. I wouldn't even venture out up here either...ice is something that you cannot compete against, even spiked tires are no joy ride on icy roads.

OK, time to hit the sack, see you gents tomorrow,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Evening Gang: It looks like the trip has been post poned at least one day. I-40 west of Amarillo Tex is closed with at least 1/4 inch of ice on the road and 1inch expected. Snow I can handle but Ice is another matter. We may leave tomorrow afternoon and RON somewhere then make the run to Albuquerque. ( the place where Bugs should have turned left).

I'll try and check in tomorrow but for now it's to bed.

Goodevening Coffee Shop patrons.  I’ll have a JR Regular please Chloë, and a couple of those fresh sausage rolls as well, thanks.

The back porch is once again stocked with firewood. So we can enjoy these dark cold nights with the wood stove merrily crackling.

Dick:  Thanks for the technical suggestions about that walking video. I think it would take a very long time to zoom as you suggest at a walking pace, and I’d be standing still for extended periods, drawing attention to myself.  The car idea is also fraught with difficulties, because driving at walking speed would either cause traffic difficulties, or elicit multiple offers of help from the neighbours along the way!  The resultant stops and conversations would mitigate against a realistic result!  I’ll see if I can find a hand / wrist position that gives the correct angle for the camera.

PC: Congratulations!

MTL:

well guys there is the bathroom.
…Ah, but did you look inside yet?…now maybe someone can answer Jeff’s question about the girls bathroom

Well, that’s got me to the end of page 1334, and it’s an early start tomorrow, so I’ll say Goodnight all, and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort, and peace.Angel [angel]

Good Evening, Chloe - A cup of hot cocoa with some of those mini-marshmallows in it, and a stick of cinnamon to stir it with, please.

It finally got cooler here; our high was ‘only’ about 50 F today,, and it’s down to 40 tonight (I know - that’s nothing but barbeque weather for our Canadian brethren...) Wink [;)] They have been modifying our forecast some, but still not predicting any of that white stuff to stick (maybe just a few flakes, mostly). Jerry and Inch - you guys might stand a better chance at the white stuff.

Today at work I found out that I won’t need to be expecting any additional help after the start of the new year (which I was led to believe earlier...). Boy, was I Censored [censored].... I (with some restraint) said to our clinical director after she’d told me “It’d be nice to have a little light at the end of the tunnel...”

I got the lights up on my tree (white lights) and around my living room window (colored lights). Yet this week to do - putting the ornaments on the tree. But since I keep my tree up until Twelfth Night (Epiphany - Jan. 6th), I’ll still get some enjoyment out of the decorations. My friend in Memphis sent me a battery-operated train and track last year, but the thing runs too fast for the curves (jumps ‘em), so I’m trying to figure how to slow the thing down and be able to set it up around the base of my little tree. We’ll see what I can do...

Dan, sorry ‘bout that - I remembered your layout design once I saw it again. Remember to post whatever ideas you come up with for your layout. Smile [:)]

Congratulations on getting all but the little stuff done on your degree, PC. For what it’s worth, when I got my BS, I ended up (re-)taking American history my last semester before graduating. (I’d made the mistake of attempting an honors section and got a D, which didn’t transfer when I changed colleges later) PC - you sure you’re not interested in that Master’s degree next? Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^]

DerJohn, I’m glad that at least you got us a ‘two-holer’ - but I’ll be glad when the plumbing crew gets done with the repairs & remodeling on our old men’s room here inside the Shop. That wind some evenings on the way out to the ‘Johnny-on-the-spot’ gets a bit cool! Shock [:O]

JP, I’m jealous - sounds like you’ve finished your shopping (though you still have some wrapping)! I’m trying to decide which way to go for my daughter and son-in-law. I’ve considered getting her a gift certificate from the Apple Store for most of an iPod’s price (a Nano, and let her pick up the extra if she wants a bigger model). But haven’t a clue on what to get for the S-I-L. My brother and I will likely exchange Amazon.Com gift certificates again. (Ho hum, so exciting, aren’t we....?) That sounds like a mess with the CSX train-truck deal.

LilRob, hope you find more of the MR’s that only got the edges a little black, especially if you had many of the older ones. Sent you an email about something, too.

I’ve ordered two smaller chucks for the Dremel. Will just manually change them when I have smaller drill bits to use. Not too hard to do, so not that big of a deal.

I got in some building kits, but am waiting to see a couple of Kadee boxcars I won on eBay (might arrive next week), and those Revell kits (four different ones). I hope next week to maybe finish up tracklaying and see about wiring so I can get to running a little switching this year. If I don’t, I figure I’ll work on putting together some building kits that I already have. Of course, I could get my ‘clock’ off and (in spite of Dick’s admonitions about running) sleep in some, perhaps. Wink [;)]

That’ll be about it for me tonight. Maybe see everyone in the morning!

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Jerry,

I haven't gotten much done lately on the benchwork.  I've done some crossbrace work and cut the subroadbed for a few curves.  Cut one 270 degree, 22"r curve out of one piece of wood.  Man the thing is big!  It's going at the bottom of the helix and it needs to be very solid, that's why I did it in one piece.  Other then that, not much.

We have near normal temps today, 36F at 11:30am, clear skies, and GREEN GRASS!!! El Nino..TAKE A HIKE !!!!!! I want a White Christmas doggone it!

It has been brought to my attention that some of you guys have NOT been rising on time these shorter, darker, colder, Winter mornings, so I want to remind you of a wise old saying from Africa:

Every morning in Africa, a Gazelle wakes up. It knows that it must run faster than the fastest Lion or it will be killed.

Every morning, a Lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest Gazelle or it will starve to death.

It doesn't matter whether you are a Lion or a Gazelle: When the sun comes up, you'd better be running!!!!!!!!!!

So guys, get your a** in gear!!!!!!!!

JEFF: This does not apply to you Jeff, your health comes first, so make sure you are well rested before starting to run.

DER JOHN: I heard that ED used your "potty" on the mountain top along the Cabot trail, and that is why we haven't seen Ed in the CS for months, is this true????? It is also rumored that a voice was heard echoing........is the toilet paper strong enough to hold me? Is this TRUE John ??? Tsk, tsk....no parachutes provided????

So what are each of you hoping to receive for Christmas? I told the wife that if the kids want to know what to get Grampa, a gift certificate to the LHS is just fine. It is better for us to pick out what we need than have S guage when we run HO or N etc. right guys? Or, to receive a thrid soldering iron, or a 10th pair of needle nose pliers, etc.

I hear the lunch bell ringing, so I am headed for the corner table, Zoe, I'll have the cajon style meatloaf with mashed sweet potatoes, peas, and 9 grain whole wheat bread.

John,

CSX up here running on the former Conrail lines has had an increase in Locomotive assisted suicides.  I would say I get several reports every 6 months of these events, I couldn't believe it.  Plus the normal, drunk driving into the side of a moving train and what not.

Chilly out here this morning, 39 for the high, but looking at 49 Wednesday.

Only 6 days until Christmas!

And 13 days until the New Year!

Philip, congratulations on completing the core subjects for your degree program. Now you can breathe a bit easier knowing the hard part is over.

Jeff, hope you are feeling better today!

Dick, we have done our own pictures a few years ago, and might just go back to doing that again. I know what you mean about the temps and not feeling like the holidays, our high temp broke records the other day with 74 degrees. I do the same with my generator, start it up every month or so and let it run for 15 - 20 minutes, then turn off the valve and allow the gas to run out to empty the carburetor and such.

Paul, now I made my last grass cutting for the season back around Halloween. I hope to be able to wait until March or April before I pull out the mower again.

John, CSX is really making the news in your area these days, eh! Sorry to hear about the fatality.

Cheers,

Morning all -

Yeah, I know... Long time, no see! Sorry for not stopping in sooner, but I have been comsumed by work, shopping, and women. Anyway, How's everyone doing? I'm doing just fine. Spent most of the weekend shopping for gifts. I'll be doing the wrapping and such this weekend. I think I'll be going to midnight mass with my folks Sunday night and then I'll spend a few hours Christmas Morning with Kristin and Josh so I can give him the gifts I've bought for him, before heading over to my parents for dinner.

Well, on the RR front, lots has been going on here in the last week. First off, CSX had 2 accidents between late Thursday afternoon and early Sunday morning. And lastly, an energy entrepreneur plans to build a facility capable of transforming 10,000 tons of coal per day into natural gas for use in homes, businesses or power plants.

Thursday afternoon, at approximately 520pm, CSX had a Train v. CSX Truck accident. Train was moving in reverse and hit the passenger side of the pick-up the employee was driving, rolling it over onto the driver's side and crushing it. Driver, unfortunately, was pronunced dead at the scene by the 1st arriving units - Ambulance Crew, 1 Town Police Officer and 1 Asst Fire Chief, all of whom reported that this would be a recovery effort and not a rescue effort right from the start. 1 Engine was left on scene incase of possible fires from leaking fluids in / around the engine compartment. plus, the CSX truck was carrying Cutting Torches in the bed, so Fire, Police and CSX officials were worried about the possibility of them exploding. Recovery efforts began shortly after 12midnight and was completed by 330am Friday morning.

Late Saturday night, a switch moved while a train was going through it, causing at least 4 cars of an Intermodal Train to derail. One of the cars was carrying a UPS trailer, which was pretty mangled from what I saw on TV.

And then there's this: From Sunday's paper, comes this story - Coal-to-gas facility proposed at old cement factory near Jamesville. It would employ up to 150 people.

On the MRR front - NOTHING!

  Well guys, enjoy the day!

Take care!
