Swish, ooo... Swoosh, aaah... the cable man just left.  I finally have broadband. Big Smile [:D]Yeah!! [yeah]Thumbs Up [tup]  It only took a few seconds to get in here this morning.  Chloe, I'll take a couple eggs sunny side up, a few strips of bacon, toast with real butter, and an orange juice to wash it down to celebrate.  Forget that healthy stuff, I'm going to enjoy whatever time I have left.

Again, thanks for the suggestions on the computer.  I rolled it back to a startup point about three days earlier when I knew it was working right.  I'll check into the problem in more depth maybe later today.  Dick, I know drivers can cause a lot of problems.  I alway keep the box and all the paperwork for any components I put in this computer, thay way I know what I have and can get what I need at a time like this.

Fergie, good to hear your Dad is home.

mmm, I wondered why my credit card bill was going up when I haven't used it for several weeks.  Seems I've been switched to top-of-the-page honors a couple pages back.  Good thing we can pay virtual credit cards with virtual cash.

Well, better get in gear and change a few things around so I can cancel my dialup service when the bill comes due a couple weeks.  Starting my info for this site.  See you later.

Well, well! Looks like I have the TOP duties for now!

Merry Christmas and burn the plastic....err....ummmm......no plastic left to burn.....Okay. Chloe, just put it on my tab, I promise to pay up before years end. Whistling [:-^] Dinner [dinner]

Only 3 days until Christmas!

And only 10 days until the New Year!

Jerry, the wife and I have been on various diets over the years and it seems that at our age now the best thing is to get regular exercise. Seems like the air I breathe now has calories too!

Jim, yea, salads are okay if you hold the dressing and sub for the no fat varieties. The no carb dressings have a lot of calories and fat though. And the snow load is quite perishable, melting can happen once they enter the lower 48 eh! Breakfast casserole yesterday was no help on the diet either!

Hummmmm!

Dick, 185 for 5'10" frame huh! The last time I was 185 was about 20 years and 50 lbs. ago! I need to do more outside work like that, heck, once I lost 5 lbs. conducting 2 hours of strenuous yard work.

RYAN: I hear that New Orleans is being tested with flooding waters again from all the rain down there. Will those poor neighbors ever see dry land for a few months?

I saw that too last night on the Weather Channel. It is a common occurrence anytime it rains more than 1" per hour, and the streets start to flood 6" to 18" in no time flat.

Way back on April 1, 1988 I was living in Uptown New Orleans and renting a ½ house in the Garden District. We got a huge downpour in the early evening and it rained about 2" in the first hour, and continued for some time. This area of the city most houses do not have drive ways, you park on the street. I looked out the front window from the upstairs bedroom and the street below was starting to flood, about 6 inches at this point. I put on my shoes, ran down the stairs and put on my rain coat so that I could move the truck to higher ground. By the time I got to the truck it had 6 inches of water in the cab, and only maybe 5 or 10 minutes had passed from the time I first looked out the window and then got into the truck. Since the tail pipe was slightly under water, it took a few attempts to get the engine to turn over. Finally moved the truck to the neutral ground (median) and it was draining. The next day the cab stunk like a wet sock on a sunny day. I had just bought the truck in March of that year; it only had 800 miles on the odometer.

Duke, glad to see you have arisen from the quiet slumber of the comfy corner booth!  I like to practice the dozing off thing too, but my retirement is still about 25+ years away....

Neal, sorry I missed that great lunch spread you had out on Wednesday! That is a great ole Southern traditional meal too!

Glad you got the card too! And thanks again for the model cars. Three days for cross country mail delivery isn't too bad, mailed it out on Monday.

Fergie, great news about dad coming home! Please give him our wishes for great health and happy holidays too!

And well put statements on the subject of subjects in the CS!

Philip, Digitrax Super Chief Radio eh! Wise choice my man! Now that's what I'm talkin' about.....great bonus checks expenditures.....oh my!

Ryan,

I just got some mail.  Thanks, and Merry Christmas to you and yours too!

P.S. - Let me know how your son likes his new cars.

Oh, good! We were waiting till the midnight hour (literally) for the photographer to deliver the Christmas cards with the family photo on Sunday evening, and I mailed them out on Monday morning. That was great mail delivery; you got the card in three days! And thanks again for the model cars. And will do!

Attaboy, sorry to hear about the PC stuck in a loop. You might want to boot into safe mode and then run the diagnostic disk if you have one available. Or try a rollback to a previous date when all was working well. Sounds like the audio or sound card drivers are in conflict with the operating system. Have you tried removing the sound card and then starting up the PC? If the PC does boot successfully without the sound card then you have found the culprit. What is the model of the SB sound card? Oh, I see Dan has covered all the bases on your request.

We are leaving for our trip to New Orleans this afternoon, so I will try to get back into the CS when I can. We will most likely be driving through rain on the way to Atlanta today, and then tomorrow we hope to drive into New Orleans by late afternoon, 4 or 5ish.

Merry Christmas
and
Happy New Year

Good Morning All, A regular and one of Bills powdered donuts please Zoe. These virtual donuts are the bees knees as I can eat all I want and the powder doesn't get in my beard or all down my shirt(no worries dudes I'll leave the rest of you some donuts). Snuck out yesterday noon and finished the rewiring on the museum backhoe so the lights work again. I had to walk away for a bit as I'd just burnt a quarter sized hole in my pants leg welding which isn't so bad were it not for my leg being next in the way of the blob of metal. Stupid. Der - many bike (powered or not) enthusiasts use the helmet cams. They are a "pencil lens" with a cord to plug into an aux connector on your existing camera. Radio Shack has a larger one in the catalog if you want to see what they actually look like. A couple of our drivers have them velcroed to their helmets so they can record their exploits on the track. I for one prefer not to have evidence after the fact. Believe it or not, I actually found a similar device to your uncoupler in a box of treasures after you posted the pic. I always wondered what it was and hadn't a clue. If i can fit it in it will work well in my future passenger yard. Hoople - thanks for the info on the Paiste's I will try another I guess. I had the trouble back in the sixties and forgot to mention that I used 2S drum sticks back then as well (I did mention we were loud). Put some more track in last night and worked out the last couple of fiddly bits i knew about. All I need now is three or four uninterupted weeks and I can get enough done to run again. Since that won't happen I'll settle for a few more hours and get the upper level set up again as it's disappeared under the construction debris. Time to pick up tools - CUL,J.R.

Good evening gents, another warm night here , a balmy 35F at almost midnight on December 21st, the first day of the Winter Soltice, and 35 days of above average temps.

DER JOHN: 13 1/2 Font size on WORD? Here on the forum it says 14pt. Is it too big or too small for you? Now, as for the camera......you only go this way once, you deserve a nice camera, Sony has a great model that uses a Hard Drive, no more tapes to fool around with, and you can download directly to your PC, then burn a DVD that you can show on TV or here in the CS.....that will keep DUKE awake ( he's asleep at the corner table again ). This camera has anti-shake stabilizer built in....so it is just what you need. Santa, please bring one of those for John.

FERGIE: We need a progress report on your big construction project. Ryan and all the rest of the guys were expecting a Power Point slide presentation showing the start of the project and each days progress. This will not look good at your annual performance review so says Cloe, if we don't see results by tomorrow afternoon or evening. Is the chimney down yet? Are the shingles on the roof? How about the siding ? Is the eelctrical started yet? Tsk, tsk, where is Bill North when you need him?

RYAN: I hear that New Orleans is being tested with flooding waters again from all the rain down there. Will those poor neighbors ever see dry land for a few months?

Time to hit the sack, big day tomorrow.......see you guys later,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Good Evening everyone.  Playing catch up here again. Nothing much on TV to distract, so maybe I can get it done!

JR:

Derjohn - what you need is to borrow someones helmet cam or figure out how to shoulder mount the video camera. Ours has a swing out panel so you can set up the shot and see where you are going at the same time. Handy when you're walking near the edge.
…I have no idea who around here has a helmet cam, or how one would connect that up to the Sony Handicam I’m using.  I tried taking the video first of all from shoulder height, but all I got was tree tops and sky! (well, not quite all, I also got a pretty stiff arm!) The Handicam has a swing out view screen too, but the power consumption is way more than the B&W viewfinder.  It’s about 45 minutes to an hour that I’m attempting here, and with the screen running I think I’ll drain the battery before getting back home.

now all I need is an old Atlas uncoupler track for my passenger yard and I'm laughing.
…if you are serious, email me your mailing address and I’ll send you a nifty uncoupler for horn hook that fits between the ties of HO track and can be moved from place to place.  No maker’s marks on the thing. Maybe someone here can identify it. It does work.

I'm sure on some level this is on topic. J.R.
…you betcha…it’s just as understandable as the computer fix stuff that just flew by here.

PC:  Nice job on the decorations!

Dick:

DER JOHN: Ok John, here is plan 3. Get yourself one of these new Video Cameras that has anti-shake......the picture will be rock steady. Mount the camera on your shoulder or head gear and have a ball.
Hey Dick, I don’t doubt for a moment that this would work, but buy an anti-shake video cam just to make a video for using on the odd nights that I can’t actually get out and walk….probably not!

BTW, your font translates into Word at 131/2 point.

JP:   Good to see you around again.

SlappyMike:Congratulations on the additional scenery.

what yo tou all think of the MRC Prodidgy Express for a starter set, its in my range , and its expandabke like its big brother.
…From what I’ve read in recent MRs, MRC DCC has improved greatly from what it was like in their earlier days.  I had an early Prodigy, but traded up to a NCE Powerhouse Pro.  However, so long as the MRC you are looking at is new, rather than some years old, I’d say go for it.  Being in budget helps a lot too.

Cleo:   I see that you are from Ottawa. You’ll find a sprinkling of Canadians in here.  3 of us are fromNova Scotia, there’s a Traction afficianado from around Milton, a new chap from Calgary, as well as one from the BC interior.

CapeJim:

I went and got some painting accessories for future buildings tonight - cosmetic sponges! I'd read in one of the Information Station pdf's about using them for painting a building to more closely look like stone.
…thanks for the tip..BTW, that’s not all those puppies will do in the paint department.  I find them useful for all sorts of dabbing and smoothing with acrylics. (Watch it, I would imagine, with paints that have petroleum based solvents as carriers, the sponge likely would dissolve – Yikes!)

Fergie:  Great to hear that your Dad is home at last.  Those C liners should cheer him up!

Thanks also for the explanation (with others, very well put) to Fargo. I didn’t see his post before it was removed, but I agree that the family flavour is worth preserving.  There’s plenty of alternatives on the web, I dare say, if people want to go down that track.

Time for a snack and off to bed.   Have to get the house tidy, or so Kris has decreed, for Christmas. So there goes tomorrow!

all, and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, com

Good evening, all! Chloe, a cup of hot cocoa - Neal, one good idea deserves another... Wink [;)]

Ahem... it appears that something moved the TOP's. Wonder what would do that? Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^]

Had fun tonight at the LHS owner/MRR club member's house. Three of us (two club members and another friend of Ron's) ran trains for a Cub Scout group that came over. I'd guess there were a dozen to 20 Cub Scouts, plus another 6-8 parents & leaders. They loved it! Ron had us running engines with sound on them (3 different trains - I had the passenger train), so when we'd go by the road crossings in front of the Cubs, we would sound the horn and the bell. Should've seen the lights come on in their eyes! I think I remember that feeling (though when I first saw some trains run, there weren't all the bells and whistles (literally). Several of the parents and leaders had digital cameras with them, and they got photos of the trains, the layout, of Ron with the kids, and of the Ron and "the engineers" (as one of the parents called us).

OzJim, enjoy your vacation (and don't forget your SPF15+...)Wink [;)]

Attaboy, when I came in earlier today, I almost drowned in the geekspeak - I gather you have had some computer problems. Not fun when those happen... Looks like you got plenty of helpful tips, at least.

Well put, Fergie! Sign - Ditto [#ditto] on Dick's comments about your Dad gaining weight once he gets to eating Lisa's  food in place of the hospital's. Yeah!! [yeah]Dinner [dinner]

And for me, tomorrow is Friday and payday - plus, I'll be off work for the next 10 days!!

***YIPPEE!!***

Now, I just need to decide what I'm getting my daughter and S-I-L (his will be easier, since he likes to read: a Barnes & Noble gift card?). Of course, they may not be in town this weekend, so I may have another day or two to decide and get Sarah's present...

Hope the rest of you are further along on your shopping than that. Shock [:O]

Blessings,

Fargo: Just to keep you in the loop you're not the first one to crack a joke that was questionable and probably won't be the last... We like to keep it respectable for the simple reason this is the longest standing thread in the MR forum. Why you may ask? simple! No Politics, Religion, or off colour humour. This promotes an atmoshpere which keeps Bergie at arms length with no chance of shutting us down. The Coffee Shop was created as a result of some of the more anal types not liking us more humourous off the wall types from sneeking in to the odd occassional boring thread and making it, how shall I say... FUN! Not that most of us didn't mind, just the odd one or too. Odd being the operative word.

So there you have it!

We're just here to "Watch Trains" and drink lots of Coffee.

Fergie

Hi Gang: I'm at our daughters. We got in about 3 hours ago and had no problems on the drive. We got off to a late start yesterday and drove all the way to 20 miles east of Amarillo before we saw any ice. The roads were in great shape so we went on to Tucumcarry and stayed there. We left there after a leasierly breakfast and again the roads were good. We did run into a slow ( and I do mean slow, about 5-10 mph ) streach about 60 miles east of Albuququere. It turned out to be a large wrecker towing a disabled simi with a sherriffs car protecting the rear. After we got past that somth sailing to their house.

( Clash of cymbols as band stricks up Happy Days Are Here Again for Fergies dad )

Fergie: I'm happy to hear that your dad is home, and the roof is tight again. Tell him that we all wish him a speedy recovery.

Well I'm going to see what's going on with the grand kids.

See you all later.

Good afternoon gents, a nice clear day here today, temp is a mild 47F, Robins in the yard, the grass is greener than early April, and not a sign of snow, maybe some on Christmas Day late. Today it was attendance at the local school to see our grandsons in Grade 3 and 5 for their Christmas Pageant...very nicely done as all the songs acknowledged all our neighbors celebrating this season no matter hwat their faith. Why can't we all just get along ?LOL

ATTABOY: You have received good info from the other guys, so I won't re-invent the wheel. I will advice you however, to be careful when you choose what upgraded driver to apply to your system. I have gone to that site because I have the same sound system. They have many models listed, so you MUST select the proper driver or you will get into deep doo doo.

JR: As soon as I get a chance, I will check out the new 0-8-0 and give it a haul test. Of course this loco will be a yard goat, so it won't be hauling cars up grades. Locomotives with no pilot wheels "hunt" like crazy on the rails.

NOAH: Where have you been? School is out, I thought you would be in the CS by now?

FERGIE: I am so happy for you and Lisa that dad is finally back home, and I'll bet after a few of Lisa's meals he will regain his weight and strength real fast. Also, great news on the roof being weather tight, at least the weather this year gave you a great break in getting closed-in before Winter sets in hard.

Later guys,

Are Paiste better than they used to be? I used only Zildjan after cracking three Paiste in one weekend (granted we did play real loud and the drums weren't miked). While the kids are on break next week we want to set the drums back up and I need to get another couple of cymbals and we really need some splash in 16" or 18". I'm sure on some level this is on topic. J.R.

Hi again.  Thanks for the suggestions guys.  This all happened fairly late yesterday and I didn't want to mess with it then.  Thought I would get some input before tackling it tonight.  Starting in safe mode (I do know how to do that from previous problems) and uninstalling the driver or rolling back to last good startup would probably be best.  My main concern is to have it running Friday morning when the cable tech is there to install broadband.  It would probably be a good idea to download an updated soundcard driver for XP with all the recent patches MS has put on it.

Morning all!

Fergie: Good to see you back.  It's been a while since I seen you in the coffee shop!

Attaboy: Have you tried rebooting into safemode, and doing a rollback? (start->all programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore)

Attaboy, don't have much time right now but heres a start:

Obviously the sound card drivers pissed off XP somehow and they need to be removed.  Restart the computer and continually hit F8.  Eventually you will see a 'boot screen' and it should allow you to boot into 'safemode.'  Do that and then use the add/remove software in the control panel to remove all things related to your soundcard.  Then restart normally and see what happens.

right after you get through any splash screens (but before the "windows" screen, with the blue "progress bar") hit the F8 key repeatedly.

What'll happen as a DOS-like screen with about 8 choices will pop up, one of them is "Safe Mode with Networking" (assuming that your Operating System is Windows XP with Service Pack 2, if it isn't plain old "Safe Mode" will work).  This should allow the computer to start up, and at least get you into windows.

You have two options now:

  1. Just uninstall everything relating to the SB card, the reboot in normal mode (easier)
  2. Reconfigure windows to not automatically restart on stop errors (a little involved, only useful if you have another computer that can get online and if uninstalling the SB drivers doesn't help)

If you do have another computer that can get online, you can make the "broken" one not auto-restart so you can see the error code.  To do this (while in safe mode)

  • Go into system properties (right click "My Computer", choose properties from the dropdown menu)
  • Go to the "Advanced Tab"
  • Click the "Settings" Button in the "Startup and Recovery" group box (it's the last one on that pane)
  • In the new window that opens, in the middle there is a group box with three checkboxes, UNCHECK the "Automatically Restart" one.

restart the computer, and when the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) shows up, there will be a stop error code, copy the entire thing - there's one hex number right after the "STOP" and then three or four in parenthasis after that.  copy all of them.  Go to google (or a search engine of your choice), and look up the eooro code (it's the first hex number, not the ones in parenthasis).  The other numbers can help in narrowing dows what you actually need to look at.

For example - if you had STOP 0x0000F4 (0x0008C4 0x000001 0x000044), you can ignore the search result that is like "If you get stop error 0x0000F4 followed by 0x000055 0x00000A 0x00007B" you can probably ignore it... as it isn't the same error code.

Hope this helps more than confuses you...

Good morning CS'ers! I'll have some of that breakfast casserole, Zoe. Smells like you put a little maple syrup in the mix. Yum!Dinner [dinner]

PC, maybe you were sleepwalking when you went to your LHS?Wink [;)] Congrats on the DCC and I hope you have fun getting it up and running.

Fergie, good to hear that your Dad's home. I'd agree with JR - hopefully, being with family (and eating home-cooked food) will help him on his recovery!

Grey and almost foggy today in Swampeast Missouri here - 57 degrees (F), and I think we got a bit over a half inch (about 1 cm.) of rain last night, with more to drizzle in today. Should be a good day for paperwork. Let's see, about four and a half weeks to catch up on...

Actually, Zoe - I think I'll also have one of those glazed donuts that Bill T. brought in, please. Need Want that sugar rush.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Blessings on your week and preparations for Christmas,

Jim

Morning everyone.

I have a question for all the computer geeks gurus here.  I'm supposed to get my broadband installed tomorrow morning but ran into a bit of a problem last night.  I was having some problems with my sound card not working quite right so ran a repair function from the disc that came with the card - a Soundblaster Audigy.  When it said to restart the computer everything was going fine, it booted all the way up and I reached for the mouse to check the sound card.  Before I even touched the mouse the screen went blank and it started to reboot again.  It seemed to be caught in a loop with rebooting all the way up then starting over again.  Any suggestions on a fix?  I'm thinking of putting the MS XP disc in and running the repair program for that. If I can get windows working right, I'll worry about the sound card later.
