Well I was going to sign off an hour ago but the house behind ours was on fire. Not sure what caused it but the siding on the side of the house was fully involved and several of us were able to muster enough garden hoses to keep the flames at bay until the FD arrived. Good thing I got 100' of the stuff so I was able to run it up the rockery, crunching a garden light then running through a wild rose bush, in the rain. It still wasn't my idea of fun. Good thing was everyone was out of the house. Bad thing... what caused it?!?

Now try running up this in the rain and in the dark.

Ken: really impressed by your latest project, Like the trucks, excellent job.

Well I might try going to bed now but I doubt if I will sleep as the adrenaline is still pumping. Time to go back to work and relax! Sad isn't it!!

Later all

J.R. When I first went to Tucker's, I said to myself, this cannot be the place, but the sign in the window said ....yes it is. It is an old Victorian style house, built pre 1900 I would say, and he uses the lower level of the house as his store. He has every available inch, and I mean INCH ( sorry Mike, no pun intended here ) jam packed with stuff. You really have to look around. But there are some nice buys, probably because of his low overhead ( no glitzy store ). The owner, Bob, is an elderly gentleman in his 80's, and knows more about trains and railroads then anyone I have ever met, a great guy to talk trains and hobby with. If it isn't in the store, he will order it for you. And , the Steaming Tender is now open in Palmer, Wed through Sundays, 11 am to 9 pm, at the Diamond. I will let you know when I head out there again. Probably in a couple of weeks.

Nothing to be jealous of yet. Right now it's just a field by a lake with a freshly paved street running past it.

All,
Can you tell I'm just the least bit tierd and lazy tonight? I'm not combining my answers into one post, I'm just answering on the fly. Time to go to bed!

Quick in-n-out tonight. I got my order from hobbylinc today and have 1 of the GP30s done. I'll hopefully start on the other one tomorrow.

Also, they sent me brass flextrack instead of nickel/silver. So I'll have to e-mail them and see how the problem will be resolved.

Mornin all, just some coffee for now Zoe.
Alls quiet here, cool n damp, temp 54, still a chance of rain today. May be frost on the pumpkin plants in tomorrow morning, with lows in the 30s.

Grayfox , glad your washer repair project went well and the CFO’s happy for the moment.
I wish I could clean our pellet stove for the year, but it’s going to be cold the next couple days, so the heat still going and I’m not burning propane. Price is just to high for it while I still have pellets.
That hobby shop sounds bout like the one I go to up in by Springfield. Nothing but train in the place, can’t hardly walk through it in places.
Thanks for the gas tax list, Ill. is in the top five, but the tax is higher since then, and we still have losey roads.

Atta Boy , nice shots of those cars. There’s some cars that come through here that are similar to those and a friend of mine said they were used to survey tracks and shuttle the big wigs around on line inspections. I don’t know if those are used the some way, but that’d be my guess.

Ken L , good pics of the trucks. You’ve given me some ideas now.

Fergie , glad your neighbors made it out Ok. We’ll be thinking of them down here.

PC , I can be jealous if I want too, train room and fishing in the back yard, sounds good to me.

Still not found the scale rule, but I did find some pics of a train wreck over by Marshall, I took back in Oct. of 70. I’m going to try and scan them. If that works, I’ll post them some time.
Time for some chores, be back in laters with some more pics.

Morning all,

Hi Chloe. Since I see that Bill didn't bring any coffee or donuts, just those cars to tease me with, I think I'll go for a hot chocolate. (under his breath)Darn that Bill and his corvette[;)]........Oh, thanks Chloe.

Hey inch,

Strange, your weather report looks just like mine! Imagine that!

I was teasing the wife (well, sort of) the other day by telling her that we're going to put the hot tub close enough to the lake that I can fish from there.

Attaboy,

I've been looking at those cars, and I don't have a clue what they're for. Could it be the modern equivalent of the rainmaker car? [swg] http://www.catskillarchive.com/rrextra/odrain.Html
Really though, it would be interesting to watch and see what they do with those cars.

Oh, and BTW Ken,

That's some fine modeling you've been doing lately!

All,

I've not forgotten you in my prayers, not even last night when I was so tierd I don't even know why I was on here instead of in bed.

To all the newbi's, glad to have you around! Come on in and grab a seat. Duke is buying, so get whatever you want. (sorry Duke)

Well since anything goes here........[;)]

A good friend of mine is a pilot for United. He got a call a few months ago to audition for a role in a movie about United 93. He is not an actor but the director did not want an actor but a real pilot. He will play the role of Captain Jason M. Dahl. The gentleman playing the role of the First Officer is an UPS pilot and some of the flight attendants work for United.

I am really proud of him and the other airline people who participated in this project. It has been living through 9/11 twice and they have handled it very well.

Well the time has come for my friends big movie debut. It premieres today at the Tribecca Film Festival.

Here is a link to the movie site: http://movies.aol.com/movie/united-93/23445/main?uid=4402&date=20060420&_pgtyp=pdct

Also Larry King will be interviewing some of the actors on April 28th from 9pm to 10pm.

Morning guys!
Quick question... Since I value the opinions of those in here, I'll ask here 1st before heading out ot the main forum and posting it as a topic.

Anyone have a rough idea as to the current value of a 1950's Lionel Locomotive unused in the original wrapper and box? I have a co-worker who's g/f's father has one along with some other items. I'll have more info on this Thursday morning, and I know that when I get that info, I'll just do a 'google' on it and use the various internet dealers and ebay to figure it out. But, in the mean time, any thoughts/ideas are welcomed.

Hey Gumby, Thats pretty cool! Is that the movie they've been advertising the last week or so, or is that another one?

Oh, BTW, it's standard operating procedure around here that if you hit the top of the page, you buy for the whole page. Since you're kind of new around here I'll sponsor you this time.

ALL,

I'm showing my new friend Gumby around, so this round is on me! (Be nice guy's)

As long as it's coffee and donuts I don't mind buying.

As for the movie.... Yes, it's the one make noise right now. Iwas real nervous about who was making the movie but Paul Greengrass is a real pro so I feel the movie will be of high quality.

When I do get to see the movie, it will be funny to see certain scenes since I now know the "details" of what went in to make it. On the other hand it will be tough to see since 9/11 had such a direct and person effect on my life as well as my friend.

I saw that and thought it looked like a high quality movie. Should stir up some feelings though. On second thought though, maybe that's a good thing. We should occasionally review the past and rediscover what moved us to where we're at now.

Good morning everyone, the sun is out today and it is up to 57F already, so we should hit the mid 60's by 3pm. Todays outside tasks call for working in the blueberry patch. I have to move some 4x4 poles that support the deer netting ( for the birds ). Then later I should have time to do more MRR reading of books and manuals.

LUC Steak and eggs ?????? Cloe, he has to watch his Cholesterol, give him oatmeal cerial and SKIM milk., and of course Ed's OJ. Make sure Luc takes his 1 a day Senior Vitamin pill too.[:D][:D]

INCH53 How's the weather down south today? Any CSX freight runs coming through?

Time to get outside, see you guys at lunch table..

Good morning CS! I need coffee today, and lots of it, sleep the past few nights has been interrupted and now my eyes are feeling it.
Not much news to report from my way this morning, just been walking in the evening with the misses and did some cooking last night too. I made a new eggplant bake dish, an Italian version with some red wine in it too. Yum!!

QUOTE: Posted by Phillip,
Yup, that's the place. They also have a fully restored turn of the century trolly that runs off of an overhead wire through the park that you can ride for free with the price of admission into the museum. Outside the museum there's a fully restored and operational merry-go-round for the kids along with putt-putt golf and swimming. There's also a big people's golf course for those who'd rather go that route.

Hey Phillip, Sounds like you could spend the whole day or weekend there with all the transportation exhibits and the golf course too. I did a Google Map too and it’s about a 14 hour drive from our house.

Hey Inch, Glad you liked the fish story. And the gas price issue unfortunately will only be resolved if we reduce our dependence on oil. Cutting back our usage is the only way to lower the price, and reduced demand will make the supply go up. Basic economics is at work here, unfortunately our current economy and society rely so much on oil that until economical alternatives are developed we will continue to see gas prices at the pump going up, and up, and up.

QUOTE: Posted by ***,
RYAN I misunderstood your original message, I thought you had an OUTSIDE monitor station like my neighbors. He had to put a solar panel on his, and it is working great. His is located about 30' from his house on a pole.
When inside, you really should have DIRECT sunlight to get full charging current. As for over-voltage with xformer, you can use a clamping Zener Diode to clamp the voltage at 3.5V so as not to overvoltage the LCD display.

***, The remote monitor unit that is outside is powered by a AAA battery, and it should last a long time, I have yet to replace it. It is the base station that is indoors that needs a new set of AA batteries every ten days. Thanks for the info on staging down the power, and I will look into that solution. Also, great job on the washer repair, bet that saved a lot in labor $$ if you had to have called out someone!

John, You are welcome! And thanks for the gas tax update on California and other states.

Thanks Attaboy, for the great NS photos. I too wonder what those cars served in research.

Ken, Great job on the propane trucks, and thanks for the quick tutorial and with photos too!

Fergie, Sorry to hear about your neighbors house, hope everyone is OK. Sounds like an exciting evening too, and it reminds me, I need to buy some new garden hoses for the new house, we left all the olds ones back in New Orleans before the move.

Good Morning all

Got the garage cleaned up this AM and some work done it the garden. And no I didn't sleep well last night, not well at all. When we were dowsing the flames last night I asked the owner's son how it started? He said it must have been arson as it seemed to have started on the outside wall. Well nothing like a random act to get you worried and bent out of shape! However looking at the location of the damage and where it is in proximity with the clothes dryer vents it got me thinking. People NEVER check their dryer vents for lint build up! And it can be a cause of fire! Which reminds me I will be cleaning mine today.

Welcome Gumby! Have a seat and tell us a bit about yourself.

LUC! Step away from the Steak... and the eggs and assume the position! Hands in front where we can see them that's it, Oh and put that fork down.

Later All

One newspaper headline I seen this morning, MIDWEST INVADED BY a cold front from CANADA!!

*** , I think that says it all. Tracks been right busy outback so far, wi***he weather was better

Been fooling round in the house with some odds n ends, too cold, damp, n windy outside. Got the stove ready to fire laters and some cleaning done in the train room, bout it.

PC , HEY, that hot tub idea is an sounds bout right to me. We’ve always wanted to dam up the holler behind us for a pond, but have never had the money. If we ever hit the lottery, hum?
The weather forecast being same, doesn’t surprise me, seeing we’re bout 90 mile WSW. of you.
Interesting link you found there on a research car.

Gumby welcome to the CF sit back n enjoy n let PC handle the tab [ his credit card has cooled of abit] . We haven’t decided if we’re going to see that movie yet, but glad their using real people in it rather than just all Hollywood actors.
Tell us abit bout yourself, modeling interest, scale, where you hale from n such?

Here’s a pic from Sunday., when I was talking to the W. bound crew, I found out they were from Indy on their way to Salem, Ill., through St. Elmo, bout 30 mile W. of Effingham. aftr that their string would be UP's problem.
They’d layover night there an head back up to Indy.
They were running behind, because, the engine they normal used was down for maintenance, and the one they got, wouldn’t start.
Mechanic had to come out and bleed the injector lines to get going.
They said it was running Ok so far, as they could run 60+ to make up some time.

Here’s a video link of them pulling out

Chloe, I already had breakfast so I'll give PC's credit card a rest...

Good morning shop dwellers, and [#welcome] Gumby!

First of all, thanx for all the positive feedback on the propane truck conversion, I hope some of you will actually find it useful. John, I used Plastruct Plastic Weld to cement the chassis back together: First, I glued the two long pieces of strip styrene to the longest frame sections and let those 'set'; then, I glued-on the rear axel section (to both the chassis and the white strips); then I glued the flat rectangular white piece onto the ends of the two long whites strips and let that harden; and finally (with the chassis upside-down) I glued the last frame piece to both the chassis and the rectangular piece. I wish I wouldv'e taken the time to photograph these steps but I was in too much of a hurry...

Ryan and Fergie, I didn't get much sleep last night either - woke up at 2:30am and couldn't relax. I was dreading the meeting at work that I would have to sit through for two hours...[xx(]

JP, I bet RT will be able to answer your Lionel question if anyone can...

Attaboy - Nice pix, those "research" cars ought to make some nifty models!

. . .
Back soon!

It's a small park, but in the summertime you could make a day of it. 14hrs is kind of a long day trip though.

I was kind of going for a "tongue in cheek" thing with the weather. Guess I missed the mark on that one.

And the hot tub thing,.....I was only half joking. She doesn't know that though.

I thought the research car was interesting too.

Interesting about your UA friend. We’ll have to look out for the film.
Re-living those times must be tough. When ever they show the towers collapse, it touches a nerve.
Your bio doesn’t say a whole lot about your mrr or railfan interests, when you’ve had the donuts, care to tell us more?
BTW, your Bonhoeffer quote just about sums up my experience of seminary![V]

About me?? First time in the Coffee Shop. Current I'm an airline pilot for NWA. That should change after the company gets the new contract signed and the furloughs begin. 9/11 for all practical purposes destoryed my career. Fortunately I have more skills that just drilling holes in the sky so I will land on my feet somewhere.

I really new to MRR. My kids are the real drive behind my MRR activities. My "hobby" is music but anything that let's me spend time with my kids I'll do with great enthusiasm. I had a Lionel set and a tyco set as a child but they rarely got used. Now they are a major part of my kids set up. I was originally from Chicago so I love Chicago & Northwestern stock. My kids are into New York Central but are looking into Southern Pacific after seeing a video on the Daylight steam engine. Also, we have a little battle here with my kids into steam engines and I prefer diesels.

We also like to go out to Strasburg but are planning a trip to Wilmington to check out the Wilmington & Western railroad.

So there is the quick and dirty.

OBTW, being now from NJ, it will be Dunkin Donuts.

I know, 14 hours is about what it takes to drive back to New Orleans. We may have to pass on making a road trip this year, still trying to catch up on all the moving expenses.
