Hello hello.

Man, was the weekend fun. Too bad that was the last I'll ever skate at Sportsmans Hall Roller Rink. The very last sessions...It's too bad that the (idiot) owner sold it. It's his own stupid fault he didn't run it right and lost money from it. I'll miss the place. But now, I must move onto another roller rink to take over...I mean...Skate at.[:D]

PC: Pawn Shops are always fun. Them and Goodwill Stores.[8D]

I'll get back to y'all later.[:)]

Good evening gents. Another quick run throuhg for me today.

Matt That tram's starting to look good. I'm not suprised as to how solid those 100+ year old bits of your house are holding up, they were built to last. Our house is just over the 100 marks well. I like to think that it's alot better built then the new thrown together in less than a month houses you see popping up all over the place.

luc Main street's looking mighty fine there sir [tup][:D]

Ed That's some nice looking railfanning that you have there in Mexico city,I have to say thouhg, that old alco 2-8-0 is the cats meow.

Scott roller rink, [:O][wow] we haven't ha done of those animals around here in likley 20 years. I had thought that that form of entertainment had pretty much gone the way of the dinosaurs.

Ryan Hey gla to see you back, good to hear that you folks are making out well in your new home. [tup]

Well folks that's it for me today.

Boss won't be happy about it raining today he would rather it rain last night /tonight this past weekend anything but when I'm supose to be working as all he can come up with is outside work doesn't know what someone can do as far as inside work LOL but mike my co-worker and I always find plenty to do for inside work.

Good Morning All,
Regular to go please Zoe. Just another run through as I spent all my time catching up this AM. Worked all weekend but did have a couple of hours n the train room tidying up and putting up trim. I am now ready to start tackling the lower level benchwork.
All the cars are loaded for Birmingham save for three we left for today as we need to do full alignments on them first. Loading went well as we had good weather though as usual I put my back out ducking under the ramps.
Hope all our friends in the heartland were missed by the bad weather. I suspect we'll have more of this as time passes. With recent evidence of polar ice caps melting and the salinity in the oceans changing, I wonder what the future holds in store. Modern biologists say they have no data for these conditions, but maybe they need to talk to the archeologists, some of this sounds familiar.
Hope the rest of you are doing well, Trent I'm glad you're down to worrying about a root canal and dust bunnies, you've been through the wringer this last winter.
Did anyone notice what a kind and gentle soul Paul is? Why the man even watered his weeds! [:D].
All for now, time to pick up tools. CUL, J.R.

Good afternoon gents, it finally looks like our spell of great weather is over, at least for a bit, as we have heavy rains due in here tonight. It started beautiful today with full sun temps near 50, then the clouds came rolling in. Northern New England will even get 6+ inches of snow tonight, and we could get some tomorrow morning as a secondary storm forms off the Atlantic coastline.
As long as it is a nice day this coming Saturday. My #2 son, Mike, is getting married. If some of you older members of the CS may remember, Mike lost his 1st wife 3 years ago to a sudden illness at age 33 leaving him with three boys. He has met a wonderful Irish young lady who had just lost her two parents a year earlier, so they have really been great for each other, and the boys love her, so we thank God for His gift to our family.

On the Hobby front, we went to the Great Train Expo ( formerly called Greenberg )on Sunday, it was my 1st to this show, and I was very satisfied. There were some really good deals. I picked up 7 cars, 5 for $10. A refir, 5 tankers, and a Gondola. I also picked up a set of 6 coal hoppers ( new ) for $60.

LUC Ahhhhh, you caught me and Fergie trying to hop that Old Dutch Cleanser box car . I'm just not as fast as I was with these old knees. BTW, where is FERGIE? Is he all tied up with the contractors at his house for the addition?

ED Are you in Texas to see the 1st game?? This is your big chance Ed, the Red Sox don't get much closer to you than this do they? And, Theo is talking with the Roger!!!! I think they are trying to get him as a closer. If they do, he would not be available until after the Allstar break.

INCH53 Mike, that was one hellava storm!! I was watching it on the Weather Channel and the local TV stations did a piece on it also. I think we are in for more of these storms as global warming gets worse and worse.

J.R. I was up at Tuckers last Wednesday, I thought I might run into you up there. He has a lot of new stock , I picked up several cars.

PAUL I totally agree with you Paul regarding soft Americans. God help us if we ever have a real widespread national disaster. People are so used to a soft life, buy everything they need at the store, cannot raise their own food, can't hunt, and even if they did manage to kill a deer, they wouldn't even know how to dress it or prepare it. Many can't fish, can't clean them, and don't know how to cook them either. It is really frightening to me. At least I am some sort of a veggie gardener, and we know how to freeze and can our produce and berries. BTW what's for supper tonight? LOL

CAPE JIM Yes, we all hit those lulls in train action once in awhile, especially when the weather is as nice as it has been, and we have all the yard and garden prep work to do right?

Talk later gents,
Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Hi all

Well, I now have more time to spend on trains due to having finished the dissertation. If I have to reference another page it may lead to me becoming a nervous wreck! Currently preparing for my brother's LAN party tomorrow - he's got five mates coming over to play computer games, each bringing their own machine, and to think that people say computer gaming isn't a social activity!

Fergie, a 5-axle C-Liner eh? Very nice! My two (standard 4-axle NYC ones) are still awaiting decent decoders, they'll probably get Lenz Silver when funds allow as these seem to give good results on pretty much anything - even managed to get an old Lima "pancake" to run smoothly at low speed using one.

Rob, it's certainly an interesting experience. We went from an 80's standard house to a 1905-built monster of a place with around 20 rooms. Some of the wiring has been a tad eccentric (the last owner was something of a cheapskate and didn't tend to get jobs done to a high standard) but we think we've found everything dodgy and fixed it. I'm now one of few people of my age who knows how to service sash windows (have replaced more than my fair share of sash cords over the past few years). Equally electrics and plumbing now hold few fears!

***, not sure about the hunting example, but I agree people in large areas of the world have become less capable. I've heard of more than a few people who are unable to do the simplest domestic repairs - something that MRR gives us transferrable skills for. That's my excuse for spending hours building trams anyway...

Bye for now

Good afternoon coffee Shoppers! Got our ditch burned out a day ahead of the Fire Permit Season. Kept it safe, with a good spray nozzle on the hose, and wet brooms to beat out stray flames.
Rather a pleasant surprise Saturday lunch time. We were in the Fairwinds Restaurant, Sheet Harbour when the Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister walked in. (He’s also our local Federal Member of Parliament, and was on his way home for the weekend [:D]) Anyway, it was interesting because he had with him a techie chap working on High Speed Internet for rural areas. Seems like there is a move afoot to get Fed and Provincial cash into the pot for a Satellite-to-Ground Station then Wireless-to- Home system. Clear line of sight for up to 16 km (10 miles) for the wireless. We shall see if anything comes of it in our lifetimes, but it was encouraging to hear.[^]

INBill Thanks for the coffee, have you seen this? I think Luc may have installed it a while back[(-D]

Good day all in the CS today!

[:D]Looks like I am buying this round! Drinks are on me today![8D]

Had a great weekend, we went to the beaches around Wilmington, NC including Wrightsville Beach, Kure Beach, and Fort Fisher. All were very relaxing, but we will most likely return to Fort Fisher beach, it is a park that used be a Civil War Fort back in the 1800’s. Got a little sun laying on the beach, but no swimming just yet, water is still too cold.

Had a violent rain storm pass through early this morning, roads were wet getting into work and lightning was flashing and thunder crashing all over. And I forgot the travel mug of coffee on the kitchen counter…. Oh, I need another cup of hot Joe this afternoon, trying to keep my focus after lunch today is a load.

Duke,

I have heard about the steam event in Apex, and I am looking forward to it. I heard that there is a guy who has a live steam circuit on his land near there, sounds like a lot of fun. Please give the details on the event!

Ken,
Glad to hear you are still among the regulars in the CS these days, and I hope your step sister has success with the treatments. Yep, the train room is going to involve a whole re-do on the plans, but that makes it exciting again to come up with a new plan.

Jim in Cape Girardeau,
Glad to hear from you too! Looks like you are keeping busy too! And good news on the tax refund, we still need to get our in, I hear that Katrina victims have been given an extension until August 15 to file.

Ed,
Thanks for sharing all the rail images from your excursions, what a great variety of action!

Luc,
Great photos of the layout!

Trolley Rob,
Thanks for the thumbs up! Need all the moral support we can get!!!

Thanks for the coffee Bill Tidler Jr. and [#welcome]

Cheers,

Actually Ryan, I try to get here once in awhile, but my posts are so infrequent that most of the time people don't even notice I've stopped in.[B)] Ever since the infamous weekend lockdown that occurred last October 1-2, my main forum 'home' has been MRF (modelrailroadforums.com). BTW We'll be vacationing in your state this summer, though not your area - we're going to the Outer Banks near Cape Hatteras.

Ooops look at the time, gotta pickup my daughter from her Monday art lesson - toodles!

Hey y'all (southern for good morn'in) Is this "coffee shop" thing something we have to vote on or am I the first to use it. Seems like a good idea Big_Boy. I've just returned from the hospital for major surgery performed by the staff of the 4077th MASH unit so I've been out of the loop for the past week. I dont know whats worse, the pain or the pain killer pills I have to take. Seems like someone has changed the keys around on my keyboard and Bubba (>^..^<) thinks my mouse is the real deal. OK, now I've always said to the new people that there are no dumb qwestions, but I have one. What is the DOS topic that was closed, or what does DOS stand fore? BTW it is good to be back among friends here again and so far everything has been going fine, all my pluming is now all hooked back up and functioning like an old steam engine beltching smoke and fire. Thanks all, I really missed y'all while at sickbay. Lupo, The pot shouldn't become sticky if it is maintained correctly. You never (NEVER) wash a good coffee pot, just rinse it with cold water, and when you brew a new batch you throw a little salt on top of the grounds and add an eggshell to it and let her brew. (old Navy trick) I really like this idea here, so thanks Big_Boy for bringing this to us. No topic to adhere to, just let her rip with whats on your mind. OH-OH, Bubba (>^..^<) just stopped by to see whats goin on and he got that cat demon look in his eyes!!

Well, you know what they say... If you don't win the first one you can't win them all. You'll be glad to know that the Boston RedSox won their season opener against the Texas Rangers today, 7-3. Ortiz goes 3-5 with a home run. Schilling pitches 7 innings, 2 earned runs, 5 strikeouts.

"Wait 'til this year!"

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Howdy y'all. An arousing welcome from B-to-the-izzose. Bose is in the hiz-ouse.[:p] I have no idea what I'm saying...[:o)]

Man, did we just get hit with a bunch of rain, wind, lightning, and thunder. The sky suddenly opened and dropped a weather bomb. Tornado Advisories are in place to the south of me.

Trolley Rob and RT: [:0] You two cannot be serious! No roller rinks??? Sure, it may not be mainstream anymore, but we have two or three less than thirty minutes from our house. I'm actually going to be going to the one tomorrow for the 7-9:30 session. And the roller rinks I have gone to have actually been pretty crowded, especially Sportsmans Hall. Many, many little kids under ten, and plenty of teenagers as well. Now...It's almost like model railroading...You never know who exactly is in the hobby. I've been roller skating for eight years, and have only ever really known a small group of kids my age who like to roller skate.

I've been roller skating for eight years now. I have "apprenticed" under the floor guard from Sportsmans. He has won competitions in his years. And now I must go on to other rinks to claim to be my "second home." I'd love to open my own though.[;)]

I'll catch you all later. [8D]

Hi Gang:

Ryan: I didn't say welcome back,so WELCOME BACK!!! I hope the enthusiasume makes up for being tardy. You know the lod saying "It's an ill wind that blows no one good"? I guess that could apply to Katrina in your case. I know that you have been through the ringer but things seem tobe working out. I know we were all pulling for you.

Jerry: Have fun with that iNvisable layout for your son. Just be careful of the dark side or have you already been corrupted? I can't remember. Of course I can't remember to put the Round Up in the sprayer ether.

Oh yea. I checked the 7.5 track tonight and the grass and weeds seem to be in fine health. I think that I'll try and grow them on the track. I'll fertalize and water and talk nice and they will surly die, like my lawn.

Well I think that I'll hit the sack. Good Night to One and All

Iced Tea w/lemon please,Ladies.
Ryan- glad to hear from you stop by more if you can.
Ken L.- Wish you'd stop by more too.
Slow day at the Shop so I reorganized the H.O. misc. wall. Things w/o a home have one there. Woodland Scenics has REDI-GRASS mats out but after talkins to a rep they are mostly for beginners who don't want to get too adventurous but want grass. It takes a heat gun to secure it to small hills and a type of glue to glue it to a flat area. All this you have to buy to get started. In my opinion it is easier(although a touch messy) to do it the old way as any alteration to the mat takes scraping w/a scraper or putty knife.
I ordered the new Athearn SF freight GP comming out and will post pics as soon as it comes.
Well thats all for now GOD bless and keep each and everyone.

Glad your surgery went well. Lupo hasn't been around for quite a while. I send the odd email from time to time, but no replies, and no visits here.

Trent: I would think the WS grass mat would be pretty much the one colour al over too. So, if you wanted to vary it, you would have to drop on some ground foam. So, as you say, why not stick to the old method? Looks like a money grab to me.

Ken L. Good to see you around from time to time. I signed up for your new "home", but really find one forum is enough, and once this one got up and running again. inertia and friendship kept me here.[:D]

It's Tuesday here already. Must getto bed.
Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for your recovery Jessie, and for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.[angel]

Good Morning All,
After the rains last night had the choice of car or ark to work this AM. Yesterday went less than brilliantly - gearbox and motor mounts didn't fit properly, manifolds foul the frame, doom and gloom. Ready to rebound today and catch back up.
Scott - Lothar and the Hand People recorded an album in the late 60's featuring the Theramin. Probably only a trivia collector would have a copy and don't know if any of it is available as a download anywhere. I think the wavery sound in Good Vibrations was done with a Theramin as well - at least it was a one string instrument IIRC. Dave Biro was (is) into all the early electronic instruments and long ago was trying to develop a synthisyzer that played more than one note at a time. Mind you, at the time home computers didn't exist and the computers that were about were huge room size devices that had little computing power. You had a 50/50 chance of beating them at chess.

Ed - nice pics. Out our way it is more and more dificult to keep steam running as the FRA seems to erect barriers as fast as you fix the last issue they raised. Last bid to restore the engine in our yard was just shy of a cool million. If I ever get the time one of my personal goals is to qualify as a steam mechanic so I can do that sort of work.

*** - Gave Greenburgs' a miss as my season starts up. I'm staying away from Tuckers as they have a brass I-5 NHRR steamer I must have and I'm not sure I'll stay rational around it. Need to save up for that.

Back to work and off to Alabama tomorrow AM. [:D]CUL, J.R.

well folks, i have decided on a location as to where im modeling, i have decided to model a part of the UP line over the Dragoons with Atsf/Bnsf thrown in for fun, i got the inspiration from an issue of railfan and railroad, very inspirational

in other news, we had a violent storm this evening which is unusual for autumn here, it was 34 degrees today! warmest april day for 67 years, reports of 10 people being struck by lightning too.

also i had maccas for lunch today, man did i regret it, im normally not for maccas but it was the closest place to eat, but im never going back, well maybe for a strawberry shake, i think subway looks better and better every day.

back to Mrr'ing i asked my parents for another 4 feet on one end of the layout, the first response was no, so i'm currently in negotiations, i will report any news on my negotiations when it comes in.

bye for now

Hi gang,

Thanx for the [sort of] welcome-back Trent/Phillip/John/Paul/* - I never really thought I'd been "disowned". You guys will always be my friends. But let me provide some background info on why I landed on the "dark side".

[* - anybody else I might not have mentioned]

It seems that a half-dozen members who hang out in the MRF coffeeshop are from the Birmingham, Alabama region - a place where I regularly visit at least every other summer. So I have a built-in network of my own friends to see whenever Vicky wants us all to spend a week with her sister's family.

I got some dreadful money-related news yesterday. It seems that because of the 'budget billing' payment plan I'm on with my electric company [BG&E], it took them an entire year to figure out I was using more electricity per month than a year ago. They just recalculated the monthly bill, and it is now $200/mo higher than before![:O] I never dreamed that heating a 24x24 garage would cost that much! As if that wasn't bad enough, BG&E plans to raise their standard rate by 72% in July because that's when the artificial rate freeze expires - so I may end up being charged an additional $300/month over what I have to pay now!

I remarked that I'll probably have to tear down my layout, but Vicky said 'No don't do that just yet' - but I don't know where I'm supposed to find the extra money to support my hobby if BG&E is taking it all from me. And I can't have the extreme temp/humidity fluctuations that existed in the garage before I installed the heat pump.

Enough from me, don't want wreck anybody else's day...

Good Morning Fellow CS imbibers…

I’ll have a tall OJ and some fresh brewed Java today!

We had a tornado scare last night, the storms that ravaged Tennessee on Sunday made its way through the east coast in the early evening. Warnings were posted until midnight, and we escaped unharmed… That was a close call; and we were starting to worry again. Having lived through Katrina we are still a little gun shy about major weather events these days. My son and I even scoped out what rooms we could hide in should we need to seek shelter from the winds.

I got an interesting email the other day about useless information, or as some may call trivia:

On Wednesday this week at exactly two minutes and three seconds after one o’clock in the morning the time and date will be 01:02:03 04/05/06. And it will be another hundred years before that will happen again. BTW, I will not be staying up to see it happen.

Hey Ken, you have most likely been more of a regular in the CS than myself lately. We are going to visit the Beaufort, NC area around the July 4th holidays, and I think the Outer Banks are about a 4 hour drive from our house, I would love to see Cape Hatteras too. There is so much to see and do here in terms of visiting geographic sites (beaches, mountains, etc.); we are still learning the area.

Jessie2001, [#welcome] to the CS! Hope your recovery from the re-plumb goes smoothly and fast.

Hello Ed!

Hello Paul, better late than never is fine with me! Thanks for thinking of us, and yes, “put through the ringer” is an understatement. Glad to hear from you again.

Trent, I saw that Redi-Grass a few weeks back at the LHS in Cary and it looked interesting. Have you tried working with it yet? It almost looks like sand paper, huh!

Well, back to work for me. I owe, I owe, so its off to work I go…..

Cheers,

Ryan
