Broodjes eh? A bunch of Crown Vics and Impalas at the donut shop or a bunch of VW's and Volvos at the Broodjes Shop. Some language's are universal.
Went to bed at 0130, got up at 0400, watched a bit o' video, just tried to lay down for a nap and a catfight out my front door brought me up rather quickly.Screamed at them almost dozed off again when there was a bigger fight. Fired off a round and ol' Tom headed for the field. He'll be back but for now- peace and quiet.

Hi all! Happy Fater's Day to all the dad's out there! I had my 1st ride in a Diesel yesterday afternoon courtesy of the crew of Finger Lakes Railway GP9 # 1701!
What a exciting time it was for me! If any of the crewmen read this, I want to extend my thanks to you all again for a enjoyable experience!

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010

I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017

Morning boys and girls (afternoon Lupo)

All that donut and broodje talk didn't bother me today because I logged on after already having eaten breakfast.

QUOTE: Fired off a round and ol' Tom headed for the field
- Hope that indicates you live out in the country Phil!!

I did a double take yesterday when you mentioned you had 28 locos and only 3-4 had ever been run. I thought to myself, 'That's a lot of motive power.' Then I started thinking, and reviewed the list of locos that I have. Comes to about 15 (not including some real old ones that I don't think run but which I refuse to throw away), and I don't even have an operating layout. And I'm looking at the sale ads for more!!! Really want an Atlantic and a 10 Wheeler if they ever come out in N scale. Actually Bachmann was supposed to release a 10 Wheeler late this year but they revised production schedule to release the 2-6-6-2 instead. Supposedly the 10 Wheeler is scheduled for 2005. And Model Power is showing pix on their site of a 4-4-0 and a 2-6-0 that they say are due for late 2004 release. I know Atlas just came out with a 2-6-0 but it's too early for my layout, and even the Roundhouse 2-6-0 that is just hitting the shops is a bit early also (even though I'm considering getting it).

Phil, if you've completed demo and are going to start benchwork, how come you decided not to participate in that 6 week layout project thread? When I read your response I thought you'd be still involved in demo. I liked the idea, but being on vacation through the missle of the project just didn't make it practical.

Well guys, almost tournament time. See you later.

Regards

Ed

Ed, as soon as I hit the submit button I knew I should have explained more but I was to tired to edit it. We have a festival called butter fest each year because a number (like twenty)of years ago we called our selves the butter capital of the world, and we celebrate that every year with a parade and carnival and demo derby, tractor pulls, ect. I think it was more an excuse for a party.

One word, "bored" Train should come tonight though. And Jim, keep you eyes open, as I might send you a couple of pics later, if I get time. If not today tomarrow.

6 DAYS TILL GALESBURG RR DAYS!!!

Dave Lotz (A member of the Burlington Route HS), is going to meet me at the train show there, somehow we're going to try to find the measurements for the Burlington, IA coaling dock. But he's also bringing his inventory of Q Connection kits, I'll probably buy an interlocking tower and a caboose. (waycar)

Hello again all.

lupo, I joined in December 2002 to take advantage of the MR express column and the new product updates. I've always posted to other forums until now. I must admit, I like this little coffe house.

Must run

John

<John jfire15 ! hope you like the friendly and sometimes off topic-ish atmosphere in the coffee shop.
maybe a stupid question, but I see you joined december 2002, yet you are making your first post today?>

Okay folks,

Here I am crying in my beer (actually a last Cuba Libre) because the U.S. Open is over and Phil Mickelson came in second. Played very well, but a double bogey on 17 cost him the lead. It was a very interesting tournament. Incredibly tough course. Today, there were no rounds under par. Only two players finished the tournament under par. But enough of that...

Welcome John (jfire). Like you I used to hang out at Atlas. I liked it a lot because of the volume of posts and the wealth on info available. While I had, and still have, several other mrr forum sites bookmarked, I gravitated here after Atlas shut down, and would expect to maintain my presence (such as it is) here even after Atlas is back up and running. Being retired I have enough spare time for two forums. [:D]

Noah - well I came pretty close with the cheese guess. Not bad for a complete shot in the dark. How's the repair work on your mrr coming?

John (?) (jpowell) congrats on the diesel cab ride!! [wow] I suspect that this type of experience will get to be even more rare than it is now as concerns about liability and security continue to restrict things. Treasure the moment.

Another day with zip progress on the little diorama. I've extropolated my time to build my 3'x7' layout (hollow core wood door) based on progress on the diorama, factoring in some extra time since the diorama has no wiring, and conservatively calculate that I will die before I get trains running. [swg] It's 'paralysis by analysis'. All I have to do is put down some dirt and ground foam. I've read so many articles, have so many options, and have so many recommendations that I can't make up my mind. Tomorrow, come hell or high water, we're going to glue something down. I mean, it's not like I have to live with it the rest of my life. I'm probably subconsciously stalling until the trip up north.

Aaahhh, the confusion of old age. When you do a countdown do you count the day you leave??? Today is Sunday. We leave next Sunday. Is my magic number 7 or is it more like 6 and a wake-up ??? [(-D][:D].

See you guys tomorrow.

Ed

Jim is just a little excited tonight. [:D]

I submitted a photo to Railpictures.net. [;)]

This is the first photo I have ever submitted to them.

(Actually I submitted it twice and got an error message twice)

But they both got through, even though they were the same pic. [B)]

Ed- Yes way out in the country. Surrounded by cornfields and flatlands.Good fields of fire.
About the engines, that was 28 in the front room. Altogether I think I have about 45. A long long time ago in a galaxy far away, I had a decent job and the ability to stop in any hobby shop within a 10-county area. Alot were also gifts. I had a girl that also had a good job. She traveled alot and would bring back an engine about 4 times a year. Those were the days. The last layout used exactly 5. 4 Atlas Alcos and a P2K SW 900. I guess I'm not alone in saying that engines call to me, and I have all types and roadnames, no rhyme or reason to it. Just like 'em.
Now as for the benchwork, the trainshop still looks like I took the last parts down with a handgrenade, It will take, going at the Speed of Phil (just a tad bit slower than the Speed of Light), about a month or two to get everything sorted, broke down and salvaged. Then, if all goes to plan, I'll be busy planning my 50th birthday camping and 4-wheeling trip, for Sept. Then, when Oct sets in with it's cooler weather, I will start building.
The plan is a dedicated factory switching layout based on the Muncie & Western in the mid-seventies. We'll see how many changes THAT goes thru before actual building commences. Also, I hope to build the benchwork at a friends well equipped workshop and truck them to my place. He's up for it, but he's the one building a house and they will need a break from construction. So at best guess, Oct will be the target month.
Noah- BUTTER DAY? Well, our local deal is called Glass Days. I guess small towns take their glory where they find it.

Phil [:)]

Should you EVER want to get rid of them Alcos, you just let me know. [;)]

I know what you mean when you say "they" call to you. My mainstays are Frisco, but there seems to be a lot of visitors too. [;)] I even sport a Frisco Mountain steam engine pulling a nice long set of Frisco heaveyweight passenger cars. You just never know when the 3 E units might need a little old fashioned help. [;)] If UP can do it, then Jim's Frisco can do it. [;)] [:)] [:p]

Just want to wish all the Dads in the cofffee shop a wonderful Happy Father's Day. I had a great day- started out with a big breakfast, followed by a nap, got up watched the U.S. Grand Prix from Indy, then another short nap, until dinner was done, and it was exceptional. Spent an hour on the phone w/ my 19 yr old son and had a good talk - the kind every Dad hopes they can finally have w/ their teenager. The wife presented me w/ a huge 1/8 scale 1932 Ford Revell model car kit (350+ parts, and it builds out to approx 30" in length). I'll need a dedicated shelf just for it. (As if I don't have enough distractions w/ model trains, model cars also compete for my time.)

Am looking forward to spending a week w/ my daughter and her family in San Jose this Sept. It's been quite awhile since I've been back to the left coast. I just hate to fly anymore. When I was in the semiconductor business I was on a plane about every third day, and sometimes in two or three cities a day, skipping across the USA, for all of North America was my responsibility. It got so my love of airplanes evolved into a total dislike of flying, and that was way before the increased hastle and trepidation of flying in a post 911 world. One day I just 'called in sick' and never returned to work. I had had enough. Now I'm my own boss, although my wife would disagree.

Sure do miss the financial ability to walk out of every hobby shop I visited with yet another toy ! Guess that's how I ended up with an engine roster for whatever railroad's paint sheme appealed to me at themoment of purchase. Most of those acquisitions are going to the next swap meet, so I can get serious about modeling a prototype. Finally.

Has anyone ever attempted to design a model railroad around a particular engine paint treatment, or worse yet, several railroads that didn't interchange, or necessarily exist or operate in the locale you're modeling? Yeah, I've even tried to rewrite history, or create crazy leased pool power arrangements, or fabricated fictitious mergers, or lay new trackage sometimes thru mountain passes that don't exist in an atlas! Like trying to rationalize incorporating the Rock Island early "Route of the Rockets" paint schemes for freight and the Seaboard's 'citrus' colors for passenger E units. . . Or justify Baldwin Sharks and Heislers in north Georgia. Or worse, how to incorporate a port scene in the north Georgia mountains !

You know, I'm apparantly not used to all the sleep I've had on and off today, for I'm just aimlessly rambling, so I'm going to put some coffee on - it's only 12:30 am or so, and get back to sorting out the 'puter, and drive that targetword/information search thingamajig doohickie straight to hell. If I can, that is. . .

Hope you folks had a great day !

Happy Daddy Day...

I love living in the country, but there are some new challenges that we are still getting used to. I'm hearing several country dogs barking-away right now. The Bear must be back - starting to think it lives on my property down by the creek, but since I don't hunt or have a gun, someone else will have to be the crackshot. we've lived hear for three years now and seen several bears, cougar, pheasants, wild turkeys, eagles, skunks, racoon, woodpeckers, and tons of species of birds... the kids have even found garter snakes and a number of frogs... At this time of year, the kids stay near the house, when playing outside. For us though, it beats city traffic.
I'll need a mocha now...

cheers, krump

Yes, Jim...well put.

Good morning gents. Coffee, black please. Another dreary morning in SoCal, and June Gloom continues. No rain but no sun. No modeling done this weekend other than spending a couple of hours down at the club going through old records..but that doesn't count. The rest of the weekend was spent working on retaining wall and fence.....so I had to go back to work to get some rest...today's menu special black coffee and Motrin.

EGMURPHY - John (?) (jpowell) congrats on the diesel cab ride!! I suspect that this type of experience will get to be even more rare than it is now as concerns about liability and security continue to restrict things. Treasure the moment. - Thanks EG, and yes, I will treasure it. I had a great-grandfather who was a conductor on the NYC when it ran through Upstate NY, so trains are in my blood to an extent. I'm sure he was all smiles while watching me from the heavens above! The ride has now made me want to go find a GP9 for my freight / industrial layout that I'm currently building. Of course, I'll even have to decorate it in FGLK colors, unless I find one already done up as such! Thanks again EG!

Ed, Repair work? don't even mention it. I don't have the time, (well I do, but I'm to lazy to use it) right now, but I'll get around to it eventualy. I've been working constantly on my Scratchbuilding model, which I'm still wondering if I'm going to finnish. I better get done so I can go work on it.

I sent Bergie a letter about deleting those nonsense posts, we'll se what he says.

Forgot to add, the Engineer, who I know well, threw a copy of the switch list that they used last night to me last night. One of the cars had to be spotted where it wasn't sposed to go because it had a air hose problem. I would bet they made the changes to the list, and faxed it when they stopped for supper in town to headquarters, and they gave me the old one, or at least I would bet that's what happened. Another thing to add to the file for things to model down the road. I'm trying to figure out how to read it. SOme things are obvious, but others will take some thinking. I've already gone over it 30 times, so here comes another 30.

Jim-Thanks, I thought we had some decent posts and I was going to get a good read with my iced joe,it turned out not to be so. Well said.
Looks like we are headed for rain again. It makes it soooo much better for the skeeters. Anything to make their life easier.Them and IRS agents. And lawyers. And leeches.
Bill- This hobby is just another form of dementia, I have taken whole states off of the map to get desired geographical features. Ended up putting them back, not fair to the people that lived in them. When I go on vaca, I usually try to buy a loco or car representing the area I visit. This is where Athearn blue box is so appreciated. Good looks, and not too much $. I have FEC GP's, SP SDs, UP U-boats, Kaiser Alum units, and many more, just collecting dust here and there. And every time I think" No more", I see something I want. I've talked myself out of the River St. Rambler two times on trips to Savannah, but I think I hear it's jazz music way back in my head. There is just no end to it.
Makes for an interesting front room, but not much practical use for modeling.

There is a place in Ft Wayne In that will train (ha ha) you and then let you drive a 44 tonner. I think they are the same folk that own 765, but I'm not sure. Had a guy that did it give me a paper for it, I'll nose around and see if I can find it.
Just finished the iced joe(warm enough again, thank heavens) and need to get activated.
Take care guys.

Belated Good Morning (Late Noon here) Gents.

Did someone say rain? Of course they did went camping with the cubs this weekend and man o man the forecasted showers were actually a torential downpour. But this is what memories are made of. The kids watching Akela digging a trench before the flood waters breech the tent entrances, made it just in time. Oh well enough of this said wanted to do train spotting of the Windsor and Hantsport but with the kids and wife and no showers for two days all for not. Hopefully Next time.

I'm off to sea in two days and managed to make it to the LHS today and bought a Cornerstone kit The Mid state Marble Company, looks promising.
Hey Lupo hopefully I'll have time to work on the logo, pretty bad when ya gotta go back to work for a rest!

Regards

Fergie

Yeah Jim, thanks from me too. I was biting my tongue waiting for someone with more tact to step in and provide some guidance.

I'm constantly surprised at the amount of rain all you guys (except Mr Harmon) are having. It's really been exceptionally dry (rain, not humidity) here this month, which is odd for June. Maybe it was the wet May. Maybe it's global warming. Maybe it'll rain next week.

No big deal, 'cause the magic number is down to 5 and a wake up.

Going to visit the daughter first. We'll be there in Houston for the 4th. Really looking forward to seeing some good fireworks display. Also looking forward to stopping in at the LHS! [:D]

Have a good cruise, Ferg. [4:-)]

Jeez, Phil, if you're going to freelance, what's another state here or there. You do whatever you need to justify the motive power you want to run. While there certainly are drawbacks to being down here where there are no other model railroaders, one of the good things is that there are no rivet counters either! [(-D]

What are you scratchbuilding, Noah?

Ooops, got to run. It's cocktail time.

Hasta luego

Ed- Absolute power corrupts absolutely! Sure, get rid of a state here, move one there, soon you're putting Wales next to Iowa and the trans Siberian RR into Boise! Someone has to step up and STOP THE MADNESS!!!![:D][;)][:D]
Hmmmmm, ya know, having some of those 18" slate haulers running around Des Moines might just be the thing. No! NOOOOOO!!!!![banghead]The voices usually tell me sensible things!
You have a great time and be careful, take lots of pix and enjoy being here for awhile.
We did get rain again tonight, picked up a bit, but not as bad as it has been.
Fergie- You also be careful, do you have access at all to the internet when on sea duty? How long before your dulcet tones bless our little group again?
Noah- I'm sure you told us, but what model are you building for the contest? Unless it's secret, in that case I apologize in advance.
dharmon-Retaining walls and fence seem to be themes this month, Bill and others are all working on them. I don't need retaining walls, but I'm thinking of starting to fill sandbags, just in case.Keep that Motrin handy.
Take care, all.

Well the great wall of harmon is more to keep our little chunk of California heaven from crumbling into the street and the neighbor's from becoming part of our patio. Affordable housing in SoCal means "charming fixer-upper", so you could say the last year and a half has been charming. The fence was required, as I'm not sure the existing one would survive another Santa Anna season without heading down the hill. Termites, sun and original poor workmanship have finally done it in. I had to tie it to stakes in a couple of place for the time being while more pressing objectives were met, like updating an early 70's electrical system and fixing 30 years of band aid patches to things....it had been a rent house for a long time. If it rained here more than it does, I'm sure I'd have a host of additional issues. Now I guess I'd say I'm moving to the home improvement phase and leaving the home reclamation phase. But on the bright side I did venture out to the garage tonight and piddle around adding weight to some dummy locos to improve tracking and the local club is just down the street. This weekend though, between soccer coach meetings will be ...sod. WEEE HAAA!

" It's been quite awhile since I've been back to the left coast."

Hey Bill, ... depends on your perspective,... from my angle that's the right coast [^], but then again, I know that you've always LOOKED "UP" TO ME[(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D][oX)][:o)]

cheers, krump

Hi Everyone. [:)]

Thank you all for the kind words. [:)]

I really didn't want to say anything but felt as if I needed to. [:(]

We are missing a young fellow who posted some "odd" topics a while back. Others have "fallen off the face of the earth" too, earth meaning the forums. [;)]
I wouldn't want a new comer to also become AWOL. [;)]

There are actually several others who appear to be chasing stars here lately. [V] Believe it or not, after so many stars you just don't even pay attention anymore. I remember when I first started and saw people with 2 or 3 stars. I thought it would take a long time to get there. I also didn't start posting at first either. But that is neither here nor there.

I saw some trains today, but they were all too far away to get any numbers. [:(]

Everyone take care. [:)]

I don't have any hard feelings against anyone here in the forums. I sincerely hope that no one else does either. Let's all let bygones be long gone. [;)]

Jim- one of the first questions I asked was about the stars, and as soon as I knew what they were, they faded away as a topic. And with so much going on in peoples lives and the world, if you get really upset over this forum, you need to re-priortize. Getting crazy over model trains is just not worth it. And having people with differing opinions and ideas is just what I like most about this place. Hopefully everyone puts it in perspective. Some of us know how to say one thing, and others know how to get a different thought across. I agree with Ed, I'm glad you did it so tactfully.
dharmon- California sounds like paradise, until you watch the news or speak with a resident, then you realize that it is part of this earth, and like everyplace, has it's natural ...features. The one thing you DO have alot of is people, and alot of people and nature sometimes don't see eye to eye. It still amazes me when we think we can change natures mind.
krump- At a Rand McNally store I saw a map of N America from a Canadians viewpoint, and it shocked me. I never even thought about what this continent looks like from up there. Made me think . Changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes.
Looks like another slow night here, so I think I'll dig deep into the forum and see if I can bring an old and forgotten topic up for some fresh air.
BUT before I go, I looked at the Bachman website (Bachman curves post) and saw something called "electronic auto reversing track". Does anyone know anything about this track? If it means that I can slap down a reversing loop without extra wiring , let me know! Then I might start considering doing the Cartier' Mining Railroad. Another choice to think about, just what we all need!

It will be 28 days unless we get into homeport to pick up supplies or program gear. I suspect we will be in for the first 24 to 36 hrs before we head out. Hopefully this months trip will be at a slower pace as last month was shear madness! I'll have a few kits and the turntable with me to work on. I saw a Blair Line kit yesterday, what are they like?

And Mr Harmon I read about your wall , been there and done it and though you wouldn't think it by the pictures the little retaining wall I replaced in the back yard required the moving of 12 to 14 tons of materials.

If I get up to Sydney this trip I'll take the camera and get some pictures of Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia repair shops. last time I was there last month the batteries went dead in the camera. There was a Burlington Northern Unit there[:0]
