Good Afternoon Coffee Clubbers,

After my comment about needing rain last night it clouded up and we had a soft rain all night. Ended just in time for us to take the dogs with us for our morning constitutional. Stayed cloudy all day, so although the temperature got up into the mid-80’s or more, it never got real uncomfortable. [^]

Nothing exciting today, spent some time trying to find some decent hotel deals on the web for next week’s trip NOB.

[C=:-)] Couldn’t complain about the eats today. Fran made fajitas for lunch, plus some home made soup. And this afternoon’s “Adventures in Smoothieland” featured a peanut butter and banana smoothie. Yum. The experiments continue. I was thinking about throwing some avocado in just for the color, but maybe next time.

Haven’t seen anything from Flip, I suppose it’s still too soon to hear about Deb’s operation. Hope things went well.

QUOTE: Capt_Turk: I'll try to post a pic. It ain't much to look at now, but someday soon! By the way, how do you post a pic here?
As John suggested, I’ve gone ahead and emailed you an explanation of the process. Hope you get it. Let us know if you still have questions.

QUOTE: (northern)Phil: I think Smersh or Spectre trains them. Thru***rains lawyers. (Now how many have any idea what that was about?)
You mean like “The name is Phil…. Northern Phil….. Put some vodka in that martini smoothie, shaken, not stirred. And forget the blender, that’s overkill.”

Congrats on the new engines… now get busy on layout planning.

QUOTE: Ken L: The heat pump and insulation on my [future] train room are working as planned. Sorry about talking this thing to death, but after spending nearly $3000 that was originally earmarked for 'direct' model railroading purchases, I need to keep convincing myself that it was a worthwhile expense…
Congrats on having a comfortable place to build your layout. Don’t worry about talking anything to death, we do it all the time here. It’s a time honored Coffee Shop tradition. [:D]

(CG)Jim, I’m glad the links worked in helping locate a club near you. Hope they turn out to be a nice bunch.

Okay, that’s about it for now. I’ll drop back later and see what activity there is.

Hasta luego,

Ed

Zoe, I'll have a cherry coke.

Good evening clubbers,

Today was a short workday for me, so I began clearing the clutter from my garage. I was shocked to see the warping-related damage done to some homasote modules (steel mill trackwork from my previous pike) that I planned to use on the new layout; I had 'parked' them on the benchwork back in 2001 to see how they would fit, and they sat there thru several winters and summers. I truly hope that I can salvage them, I put huge amounts of time and money into those sections.[:(]

[OOPS - I just noticed there are a lot more replies for me, I was looking at the wrong page! I'll get back to the rest of you guys later, I promise![:I] ]

Ken, if it isn't too nosey, what was the cost of getting the heat pump in your garage. I have a garage I plan to use for my main layout but it needs a heat pump too. Just wondering what I might need to do it.

Not nosey at all! My 12000btu window-mounted heat pump cost about $1900, another ~$300 for the fiberglass insulation (ceiling only), plus a few hundred to have a 240vac/20amp circuit installed to power the unit (the electrician who did this rolled it into a larger rewiring job, so I'm not sure of the exact amount).
You should make sure you measure the area of your garage first (mine is 528 sq ft) to ensure that you get a large enough unit. Other things to consider: (1) Is your garage separate [exposed on all 4 sides], or is it part of the house? (2) Is there a ceiling, or open rafters? (3) Are there any windows, and if so, what type? I had a heating contractor evaluate my garage's heating needs - you should probably do the same. I saved several hundred by installing the unit myself, rather than the HVAC company doing it.
...
Need to take care of some family issues, see you all later.

Hi, I'm back, fortunately. I got home tonight and hit the power switch on my puter and...nothing. It wouldn't power up at all.[:(] I checked all the usual culprits - power cord, surge protector, breaker box, and so on. Nothing helped. I finally disconnected everything and took it to a nearby repair shop. It needed a new power supply. Thankfully the shop owner put one in while I waited. Pretty good service for these days![tup]

Rob,
QUOTE: Did you all know there is a town in Texas called, Canadian. Or one named, Buck Naked. Just thought I'd throw that last one in for some amusement

Just Buck Naked? We have towns in PA named Blue Ball, Intercourse, and then...Paradise![:P]

QUOTE: I was thinking about throwing some avocado in just for the color, but maybe next time.

Ed, save the avocado for St. Pat's Day on Thursday

Ken, thanks for the info. I'll have to measure the garage but just guesstimating I'd say it's probably a bit smaller than yours. It is free standing, but is alreading insulated and has a ceiling. Two steel insulated garage doors that will be replaced with 2X4 framed insulated walls and two small double hung windows. It also has electricity in place but it is only a 100 amp subpanel. Will need to go to at least 150 amp for heat pump and railroad.

I see Cape Jim is here, get your favorite beverage and join me.[:)]

Well all - Just checking in. The trip to Texas (San Antonio) was good. Now, I have to go in front of a 'board' on Thursday, as a formality, before they'll promote me. Everyone is saying that it should be effective 1 April....YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Things are cold back here in Central New York. Wish I was still in TX as it was 70-80 for the past 2 weeks, w/ little rain. (Beautiful, if you ask me!)
As for the homefront, for those of you that know of my situation, well the weeknd home was like 'walking on eggshells' if you catch my drift. She called me yesterday and asked me if I would be willing to ask my parents if I could stay w/ them till she moves out in May. Of course they said yes. So, here I sit on my dad's cpu checking in to let everyone know that I'm back in CNY alive and well. Once she moves out, then I'll have the place till I move out at the end of June.
Anyways, I have to go and do some studying for the 'board' I'll try and check in either from work or from here tomorrow.
Have a safe and enjoyable evening all!

Good Evening, and Chloe, a mocha please (coffee). On Attaboy, please. [:)]

Thanks - Mitchell was a definite help.

Ryan, I figured just from the sheer hours of practice that you must be getting pretty good on the tile-laying. [:)] Sounds like once you get the benchwork going in April, you’ll have one terrific trainroom![tup]

Still waiting for word from Flip on Deb’s surgery/recovery. (Impatiently, but waiting and continuing to keep them in my prayers and thoughts).

Boy, with some of the questions here I had to check to make sure I wasn’t in the Lowe’s or HD forum. [}:)] We do cover a lot of topics in here (and really, FTC’s - Forum Topic Cops - it’s MRR-related! [;-)]) Oops, did I say ***’s favorite phrase (HD)? [(-D]

Hi, JohnP! Good to see you around again - how’ve things been going? Did you get a new place/moved in yet? Hopefully soon, if you haven’t. Attaboy’s buying your beverage (and dinner) tonight. Just give Chloe your order, as usual. [:)] May your reading be quick!

Noah, if you might want to borrow/steal/use any of my module design (which is really a double module), feel free to use any that works for your needs. (or not, if it doesn’t match what you want/need). I’ll email you the link, since it was a while back.

Gonna kick back and read some in one of my new MRR books tonight. After getting off work an hour later than expected (and spending about 12 hours at work yesterday)[censored], I’m ready to relax tonight![xx(] Stopped by local Fazoli's [dinner] on the way home.

Enjoy the evening, modelers![:D]

Just a quick visit tonight.

I've been watching a National Geographic special on PBS about Arlington Cemetery. It never ceases to amaze me that no matter what country you are from, the traditions of the military are transparent of any border and will always command respect from anyone who was/is connect to it. Yes, I know, I am so far off topic I should be on another forum but I had to share this.

JP - Congrats on your forthcoming promotion. Well deserved I'm sure. As to the other stuff I understand how you feel, I was there about 11 yrs ago. Hang in there. You have my support.

The show is back on, I must go

Hi John! Actually, the weather was looking like the western part of TX might be getting some wet stuff soon (rain or snow, depending on whether it actually makes it to the ground or not). We'll wait for Teffy's weather report on that, though.[;)]

Will pray for your board appearanceconfirmation Thursday. Once you get the job, you should be close enough maybe for a trip to visit Teffy or Ed, right? Now, that April 1st start date - they're not pulling your leg, are they? [;)]

Blessings, and see you later,

I thought of it while I was putting screws in the sub floor or our house when we did some remodeling. I found that getting up from a sitting position is a lot easier and have you noticed how the ground seems to be getting farther down all the time??

Noah-Good for you on finding a club to work with. [tup]

Ken-It would really be nice to have the garage for a layout but I am afraid I would have to share the room with my bike(motorcycle) the one other thing that really makes the day. Oh and don’t tell Ed that planes do fall in there too,I wouldn’t want to be accused of helping to lead Junior astray.

Ryan, the challenge for me is getting people to try new technology (read: spend money on it). You would think an aerospace R&D lab would be bleeding-edge, but apparently that doesn’t apply to their ‘business’ software – non-engineering DBA’s like myself are the Rodney Dangerfields of the funding food chain. But I have found that, if I can somehow make a manager believe a new approach was his/her idea (not mine), I get better cooperation.

Steve, I forgot to mention – a standard 115-volt AC/heater unit was available for $1400, but I opted for the heat pump because it would give me lower electricity bills.

Hi Everyone;

Flip; I’m thinking about you and Deb. I’m make a special prayer.

Cat Tom; I’d forgotten about the Rio Grande borrowing the Yellowstone’s . Still they really look more at home with a string of ore cars at on the tail end.

Capt T; Where did you get the steam winch engine. I located some in Duluth off the Irvin C. Clymer but couldn’t get them in the trunk of Mom’s car. I’m waiting to see the Pictures.

Cat Tom; Oh Well; as long as they agree.

JP; Yea; I miss the warm dry weather too. It’s in the 30s and raining here in north Texas. It sure was a short summer. Almost forgot, the panhandle is getting a bunch of Snoah.

Well; I see that everyone has left so I’ll head for bed. Ill see you all tomorrow.

Good evening Clubers- Got home about 30 mins. ago Tired. 9(hours at the hospital.
Thankyou toall for your prayers and kind thoughts. They have been answered. The
surgeon came out around 5:20 , told me all went well. He must be into Z scale. He
removed some spurs, scraped some and used them as a base for 2 brackets/wedges and screwed them in place so the discs would not press on the nerves. Talk about scratch building, wow.
Teffy had called while I was out and I called him back. Had a short but very nice chat.
By short, under 25 minutes.
To many posts to read. I'll catch up in a couple days.
Thanks again for all the prayers and good wishes.

Flip, very good to hear Deb's surgery went well (maybe that doctor is a MRR'er![;)]) I also am sure that all of us will be continuing to keep Deb's recovery in our thoughts and prayers (and you as well).

And we should mark it down on the calendar - Teffy only talked 25 minutes?[}:)] That's amazing, too!

Hope by now you're getting some rest (and that Deb is sleeping soundly).

Just got back from choir practice, Fr. Anthony has been raving about my Garage Empire to all and sundry at the parish--something about a post-Easter potluck at my place. I told him that model railroads were notorious for not running properly for company, he said he'll come over early and perform an Exorcism, yuk-yuk. Ah, those Franciscans!!

Luct: HILARIOUS!! Thank you so much--Spooky took one look at it and headed for the hills--she thinks I went out and installed a cat in the Compaq. BTW, on your other post, I mean it about the Cornish Pasties if you open that bar and grill in Cornwall. How about Penzance or St. Austle? I have some shirt-tail relatives over there on my father's side--ever notice how Cornish last names begin either with Pen or Tre or Perry? Out here in California, they're called "Cousin Jacks", don't know if that's a nickname used in other parts of the country. Me Gram' on Dad's side was raised in Cornwall (St. Austle), made the most incredible meat Pasties I've ever eaten. Yummy!!

Paul: Right about those Yellowstones and ore trains--got a Video of some of them working in 1960--talk about spectacular! I still say they're the handsomest Articulateds that God ever created. Did you know that Baldwin based them largely upon 2-8-8-2's they'd built earlier for the Western Pacific? From the front, it's almost impossible to tell one from the other.

Flip: Glad the surgery went well. Sounds as if your doctor isn't a model railroader, he SHOULD be! Hope Deb recuperates quickly. She's still in our Parish prayers.

Well, got Highway 49 paved to the Sierra City town limits this morning, and the concrete railroad overpass built. Now to install it. Woodland Scenics has come out with some nifty '40's and '50's automobiles, also some ready-built WWII era town buildings, but Holy Crackers--the PRICES!! I could buy five more Accurail refrigerator cars for one General Store. Oh well--they're pretty attractive, I'll probably bite! Tomorrow i'll fini***he paving, then ballast the mainline and plant some trees. Oh yah, maybe run a train or two, since I built all this scenery for them, right?
Getting late, need my sleep. Still laughing about that Cat Screen Cleaner! Gonna download THAT one!
Later,
Cat Tom (okay, it works for me)[:P][:P][:P]

Its a quarter til three, no one in the place 'cept....me. Oh well, the life of a graveyarder.
FLIP- Brilliant. Great to hear Deb is ok, is that the end of the operations? Hope so, take a break then get back in here.
TomWatkins,Siberianmo, KenLarsen and trolleyboy- Spent the last 3 hours working on USS#1, got windshield wipers and MU hoses on, didn't bring any CA with me(DUH) so the grabs will need to wait til tomorrow. Using the chiefs magniviewers is a huge help. i'm not sure if I could have done this type of work even when I did have good eyes. But back then, I know I didn't have the patience to do it. And trolly, I resisted the urge to rush up to the UPS man and climb on the hood, beating on the windshield begging him to hurry up! I figured he'd not take it in the spirit it was intended. I sure do like these engines, things seem to go together reasonably easily, and the results are impressive to me.At the rate I'm working on them, they probably won't be finished for a week, but at least they won't be rushed together, something I have had problems with in the past. As for the layout, the trackplan has been set for a few years, I just need to get it started.
Which brings me to Kenlarsen's comment about his heat pump- Believe me, it was worth it, my trainshop has no heat as of yet, and it sets idle anytime it gets below 40F. Thats another thing on the to do list. Sounds like Ken is doing it right from the beginning.
JimRCG- We'll take any temps over 33F. Weatherguessers SAY its gonna get near 50 this week, we'll see.
twhite- be the Alpha engine, and tell those Yellowstones they'll haul whatever you want them to! But whatever you do, don't upset them, that could cause trouble.
JPowell- Take it one day at a time and hang in there. We're always here as a sounding board.
Ed- Of course, I knew you'd get it,being licensed to chill as you are! Your smoothies sound great, vicariously of course. Have another one for me. Going to the dr today to hear more stuff I can't do or eat. Ratz, this diabetes stuff sure does bite. Wish you'd get on your thinking cap and cure it. Maybe by tomorrow, ok?
Gonna get back to USS#1, I'll keep you posted on the progress!

OOOPS- JimRCG- I really like that scheme, the yellow is there for safety, but maybe just a rust colored stripe at the top? Just my 2 cents, the blue throws it off just a tad.
But my MIDWest scheme is dirty grey and yellow, so when it comes to the higher colors, I'm a bit challenged.

Chloe, I need a tall mug of coffee.

I’d say good morning, but there’s nobody else here so I’ll just leave a few messages.

Flip, glad to hear Deb’s surgery was successful.

Which brings me to Kenlarsen's comment about his heat pump- Believe me, it was worth it, my trainshop has no heat as of yet, and it sets idle anytime it gets below 40F. Thats another thing on the to do list. Sounds like Ken is doing it right from the beginning.

Northern Phil, thanx for the kind words. Except if I really had “done it right” when I moved in here in July 2000, my layout would’ve been functional several years ago[(-D]!

CatTom, will he have time to do exorcisms on all the small kids who would be there? If not, I’d put up serious amounts of Plexiglas pronto

Good Morning Coffee Club!

A double espresso for me!

I got to stay awake today, and I’ve been up since 3:30 am with the thunder and lightening. Rattling windows and driving rain kept me up most of the night, so I just hope I can make it through work today!

Flip,
Great news about the operation! Give Deb and yourself a hug from me! Prayers and thoughts are with you my friend.

Fergie,
Good luck with the computer; I know how missing it can be! What did we ever do without them?

Noah,
Good luck with the studies, glad to hear that the homework has slowed down!

Ed,
Yum, fajitas are good! Speaking of avocados, I found an avocado soup recipe the other day, though I have never tried the preparation it looked good. Let me know if you want a copy!

Attaboy,
I have seen a few computer power supply units go out, and they are usually a quick swap out. Glad to hear it worked out for you, sometimes when they start to go out they can fry the motherboard and other components.

Jim in Cape Girardeau,
Not only has my confidence level in my DIY abilities gone up, but that grouting really works the upper body muscles. Kind of like an exercise program that I don’t have to pay anyone to attend or buy any special equipment. I will post some updated photos of the progress later this week.

JP,
Good luck with the promotion!

Duke,
LOL! I agree with you, getting up from the ground level is not as easy as it used to be. Thanks again for the tip; I like that idea especially for working under the benchwork.

Ken,
It is amazing how management at many organizations see IT as only a support department, and not a solution provider for improved business processes. Yes, I agree, new technology is a good thing, sifting through all the options available are another issue. When we look at changing a technology solution we have spent up to six months researching all the various vendors and choices available before making a decision. Sometimes the decision process seems to get bogged down in the fine details, one solution provides this and the other one that and neither is the perfect solution alone.

[#welcome] to Brent! Have a cup on me!

Well, gotta get ready for work. Talk at you all later!

Brent: [#welcome] This makes 3 from OZ that we know about in the Coffee Shop. I see you know about Zoe and Chloe, so order up virtually anything [(-D]

Time for today's definitions:
5. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period.

6. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high.

Flip, I'll pass your good news about Deb along to our churches' prayer chain. [yeah] ....and surgical skills are sometimes needed in mrr it seems [(-D]

I hear "Boots and saddles" being sounded, so had better get going for the trip to town.

Good Mornin' Folks! I've been lurking around here for a coupla weeks and decided I should probably join in. I'm an old school HO scratchbuilder (learned from my dad, scratcher of fine detail brass 4-6-2's), but the wife says we don't have room for HO, so I'm switching to N. Anyways, a big thumbs up to Deb for her recovery (back surgery ain't cool) and I'll be wandering in every once in a while.

Cheers,
Jim

Good Mornin' Everybody,

Flip, Outstanding! That is wonderful news. In my opinion, really good orthopedic or neurosurgeons are at least wizards, and border on true miracle workers. I'm so glad it went well, and you know that you will both be in our thoughts and prayers through the recovery process. Take care, and tell Deb we said hi.

It's another gray rainy day in the mountains today. The coffee is excellent and the to do list is mercifully short this morning. Tonight and tomorrow we're supposed to have another dose of the ever popular "winter mix" blow in. Spring is close, but winter's not done yet.

Yesterday's list took a lot longer to get done than I'd expected ( so what else is new) and consequently I only got one side's worth of air pipes done. That's OK, it's still progress.

When I make my post office run this morning, I'm going to stop by the library at the college to see if they have access to the Sandborn maps for Ga. The NC maps are available through their library system and they are worth their weight in gold. I need to get cranked up on the layout plan for the club and Sandborn maps for a number of towns on the old Hook and Eye line would be very helpful. The layout won't be truly prototypical, but we want a number of places to be highly recognizable. I really need another major project to fill all the idle hours, but it will be fun.

Siberianmo, basackwards works just fine sometimes. I do some of my best work that way, especially if I've done something and I'm not happy with the results or if a better way suggests itself at some point in the project.

Ken, I think time and money spent on making the layout room comfortable and attractive is well spent. It creates a better working environment, a nicer place to be in, and sets standards for the quality of work on the railroad.

JimRCGMO, I like the color scheme. It's very attractive and wouldn't be hard to do, either in full size for the prototype or on a model.

CatTom, It sounds like the Yellowstones themselves know what they're about. Hauling lots of produce to market is useful work.

Der, those are hilarious! Please keep them coming. Thus far my favorite is Bozone. Wow, is that true, sad, but true.

JP, I'm glad the trip went well and things are looking up on that front. Hang in, and know that we're all thinking about you and praying for you. Things will get better.

Luc, you're right, of course. The best traditions of the military are universal. They are all based on honor, integrity, and service to a cause that one believes is right and worth serving. Places like Arlington are perhaps where it shows the brightest, and those places are found all over the world.

BJ, thanks for the drink last night. It being late, I went for the decaf, which although low octane, is still very good. I agree, the ground is getting lower, or maybe gravity is getting stronger.

Phil, the magnaviewers or something like them are a huge help. I've got a couple of pairs of reading half glasses that I use. One is 2.5 diopter and the other is 2.75, and they really help for really small stuff.. Since they are like the bottom lenses of bifocals, I can look over the tops when I need to reach for something and then back down to focus on the work.

HPVTsunami, welcome to the coffee shop! Have a deep fried and enjoy. Tell Mitchell we said hi.

I'd better go for now and get some stuff done.
Have a great day, everybody,
Ga.Tom
