Evening all, too late for coffee for me, unless anyone has some Decaf (yech!). Second clear day out here in Northern Calif--we had tornadoes about 7 miles north of me in Natomas two days ago--did some major fence and tile damage, but no injuries that I heard of . Funny thing about tornadoes in the Sacramento Valley, every time we have one, it takes the newscasters and the regional weather office about two days to admit that we DID have one. ("Oh no, I think it was a funnel-cloud, instead--"). Anyhow, just spent a day on the layout putting in benchwork for a reverse loop that I fouled up first time around, so thought I'd say 'hi' before I hit the sack.
By the way, Lil'Rob, if you can't come up with a tender for that Y-6, let me know, I have an old one from a Rivarossi that bit the dust some years back. A little battered, but serviceable. Well, guys, have a good night, let's hope the forum settles down a bit (whew!).

Hi guys, I am just starting out building my first "adult" layout...after a break of nearly 30 years. I have been enjoying sitting back and reading the forums for a little while but decided it was time to be more than a passenger.... I am sure I can find most of the info I need by searching but I may just ask the odd stupid question or two just to save a little time :D. Getting into it as my son is nearly 6 and hanging to play with the trains........and I am hanging to do something as well. A few trips to the local hobby shop have unearthed an absolute gem of a shop owner which seems in stark contrast to most of what I am reading... anyways GL HF.

Morning all

Posting in between lectures - have an hour gap so tend to find a free computer and check emails, etc. Snow's pretty much gone, though I passed a gritter/plow truck on my way over - he actually had the (demountable) plow attached so was obviously expecting problems - usually they just have the gritter body.

Welcome to all the new members, this seems a good place to hang out - flame free even if you need nomex underwear to get through some of the other topics at the moment! Hope it'll die down soon and civil normality will return.

Grubby, remember my old physics teacher saying that the only stupid question is the one you don't ask, so ask away - the answers will probably help quite a few people. I think the LHS posts are the same as most reviews - people only bother posting if they've had a bad experience, so you only read about the bad ones and not the good, this is in my experience anyway - I've been to plenty of LHS and only found one bad one, which closed shortly after!

Well, not much else going on here - have been reading through Fleischmann parts lists with a view to repairing my N scale rack electric loco (little green boxcab thing with a working rack drive), the pickups and worm gear are o/s, but should be replaceable. Bye for now!

Wow, flack jacket time out on the main forum. [:0] But this is beyond your normal flaming. Hopefully Bergie has the ability to block ISP addresses.

Cloudy down here today. In fact the forecast is for clouds and a chance of showers for several days. That’s great because the farmers down here really need it. This area has practically no artificial irrigation (small farms, non-availability of credit) and the farmers live and die with the rains. We’ve had no significant rain to speak of in two months and it’s well into spring planting time.

Plus, clouds and rain mean lower temperatures!! [^] Added bonus for me. Last night I probably should have bit the bullet and turned on the a/c. But I had the overhead fan on warp speed and a floor stand fan blowing directly on me. I was determined to make it through two complete months without resorting to a/c and we’re almost through February.


Trent, missed your post yesterday as you posted it just seconds ahead of the post I was working on. Welcome to the forum. In what part of the great state of Texas do you live? As someone else mentioned, we already have one other law enforcement type, Phil, who’s on vacation right now. But come to think of it, we also have a Youth Probation Officer (Krump) who hasn’t been in here lately. What scale do you model in? Teffy is our resident Santa Fe aficionado, so he’ll also be happy to have some company.


Duke, when I email you regarding the plane, the first one will come through the forum mail. In case you haven’t received anything like that before, I believe it shows a Trains.com return address, then shows the original sender’s home email in the “reply to” box.

It does take a lot of steps because you have to manually type in the brackets with the quote or /quote. But after a bit you’ll get the hang of it. Try using the “preview reply” button before posting. That way you can see how your post will actually look. Then, if you’ve messed up you can correct it before sending the post. You can also go back and “edit” your posts afterwards.

What you want to do is actually ‘save’ your post in Word. For example, as soon as I start a new reply in Word, I save it as “postX”. I periodically hit save as I’m writing it (old habit). One of the beauties of the hobby is that nothing is so fouled up that it can’t be redone. I don’t normally associate tornados with California, but it’s been a weird year everywhere.

Nothing wrong with asking before searching. There are only one or two people out on the main forum who will complain, just ignore them. No one really expects a newcomer to the forum to wade through all the back stuff before asking questions. Keep in mind though that while it’s fine to ask questions here in the Coffee Shop, you’ll usually get a better response to general questions out on the forum itself. The Coffee Shop, while it has a lot of posts, actually has only about 25 regulars who hang out here, plus the ones who drop in from time to time. So there isn’t a huge knowledge base here (not to say that we don’t have some pretty good modelers here, just talking about sheer numbers).

Bad press sells better than compliments, don't judge the average LHS owner by what you read. My LHS owner (although some 700 miles away) is a great guy. Happens to be Teffy’s LHS too, but he lives closer, only about 90 miles away from the LHS.

Well, see we've calmed down a bit from last night--let's all give a big cheer to Joe Fugate for doing a lot of late-night posting to shove that other stuff off of page one, all right? I have to admit that I got sucked into one of the posts (must have been half-asleep), which unfortunately kept it up longer than it deserved, but I got out of there FAST, once I saw where it was headed.

Try the General Discussion area for more brain trust. We only get about 10 to 15 people in here a day. I even been able to answer a few myself, having gotten back into the hobby too after about a 10 year hiatus.

I am so glad that I missed most of the Biggie Smalls, Parker Legend stuff from last night. I did see the sticky post when it appeared yesterday morning and wondered how long it would take for him to join again and with a vengeance. I try to avoid those kinds of posts now; it is too easy for me to get sucked into them.

Some of you may know that it is National Engineer's Week this week, and I got to participate in the Southwestern division of their ceremonies yesterday. Xerox sponsored me as an Engineer for a Day, and then they gave me tickets to the Engineer's banquet in Oklahoma City last night. Xerox was fun, they let us run one of the robotic arms, and we toured the plant and had a lot of hands-on experience with the equipment there. It was quite a day.

Snow started later than we thought it would, which meant I was able to restock the wood in the dry. Not much wind, so no blizzard. It was really coming down to stay by the time we got back from shopping in the Harbour. Still doing it at 3:00, going on 4:00.

Duke, here’s what I do. I open up Word even before coming to the Coffee Shop. Then I come in and read the posts. Only at the ones I want to reply or add to, I copy that bit, making a note in my head as to who it is (in this case, your good self)
The I go to my Word page, type in the person’s name (Duke: [ quote]) and paste the copied bit, and fini***hat with the [ /quote] I just keep on doing that down the pages in the shop I’m ploughing through. When I’m done I go back to the top of the Word page and put in my greetings, order for coffee etc. Then I come down to the end, type in a sign off. Select All, and copy. Over to the shop message box or Reply to box and paste the whole thing. Preview to catch things that Word hasn’t already and add in any smilies that I don’t know the codes for, and Submit.

They had a summer place on Stokes Bay, Tom and Minerva Austin. He was about 90 when we knew them. Had a son who did the hunting. We can’t remember his name. If you think of it, ask Doreen about them.

I forgot to add something in my previous post.... yesterday was a nice day with the sun out and hardly any clouds in the sky.... then around 7 last night we got hit hard for about 30 - 45 minutes.... with lightning and thunder.... we got probably a half inch of rain in that time period or more....

Now today we are back to partly cloudy skies but there are still scattered showers mainly in the mountains now.... come sunday night or monday we are expecting another storm to pass through for a couple more days.... at least they are saying that it's not going to be as bad as this last one.... at least I hope that it's not nearly as bad as this last one.

Glad to see "round 2" of the flaming seems to have been ended, not sure how many more waves we'll see, hoping he'll get bored soon though. In event of restart this'll probably be the only bit of the forum I visit - had to put up with enough of that kind of thing back in high school. Ah well, on to happier subjects!

TrolleyRob: Meant to mention this earlier but forgot. www.ehattons.com have some tram power trucks that might be of use - they're based on twin powered 4-wheel trucks supplied as fairly simple kits, various wheelbases/wheel sizes are available. Intended for Briti***rams so they'll be great for a trolley as well. They also stock the Corgi trams which are nice models, though they need a set of power trucks to be usable as they're really aimed at the diecast collector market, though the shells are nicely detailed and are to 4mm=1ft scale (OO). www.modeltrams.co.uk also has information on the hobby from this end which might be of use - they have grooved-rail track which can be tricky to find. Hope this is of help!

Snow was interesting on the way home - anyone remember the "starfield" screensaver on older Windows versions? Imagine that coming at you at about 60mph (plus whatever the wind speed was) and you'd have a pretty good idea of my forward view this afternoon. It wasn't sticking though. [sigh]

The one we keep referring to is Papa Ben’s Train Place. There are a couple of good ones in Houston, but we both prefer Papa Ben’s, not only for it’s selection, but also for the friendliness of the staff. It’s just south of the Southwest Freeway at Kirby. Take the Kirby exit, go south under the freeway for about 4 blocks (+/-). Turn left on South Blvd (I think there’s a big car wash on the corner). Not to steal Tim’s thunder, but it’s a great tasting dessert, and the specialty of Brennan’s Restaurant in New Orleans.

The following is from the “Brennan’s Restaurant” website:

In the 1950's, New Orleans was the major port of entry for bananas shipped from Central and South America. Owen Edward Brennan challenged his talented chef, Paul Blangé, to include bananas in a new culinary creation - Owen's way of promoting the imported fruit. Simultaneously, Holiday Magazine had asked Owen to provide a new recipe to appear in a feature article on Brennan's.

In 1951, Chef Paul created Bananas Foster. The scrumptious dessert was named for Richard Foster, who, as chairman, served with Owen on the New Orleans Crime Commission, a civic effort to clean up the French Quarter. Richard Foster, owner of the Foster Awning Company, was a frequent customer of Brennan's and a very good friend of Owen.

Little did anyone realize that Bananas Foster would become an international favorite and is the most requested item on the restaurant's menu. Thirty-five thousand pounds of bananas are flamed each year at Brennan's in the preparation of its world-famous dessert.


Banana's Foster
• ¼ cup (½ stick) butter
• 1 cup brown sugar
• ½ teaspoon cinnamon
• ¼ cup banana liqueur
• 4 bananas, cut in half
lengthwise, then halved
• ¼ cup dark rum
• 4 scoops vanilla ice cream
Combine the butter, sugar, and cinnamon in a flambé pan or skillet. Place the pan over low heat either on an alcohol burner or on top of the stove, and cook, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Stir in the banana liqueur, then place the bananas in the pan. When the banana sections soften and begin to brown, carefully add the rum. Continue to cook the sauce until the rum is hot, then tip the pan slightly to ignite the rum. When the flames subside, lift the bananas out of the pan and place four pieces over each portion of ice cream. Generously spoon warm sauce over the top of the ice cream and serve immediately.

Good afternoon gents....just got back home from a week in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, at Attitash Mountain in Bartlett. For those not familiar with the location, Bartlett is in Crawford Notch RT302, about 50 miles from the Canadian Border. We had snow 5 of the 7 days, about 15 inches in total. Then when we arrived back home ...COWABUNGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! another 15 inches of snow here to shovel...WOW !! AND, we have another Nor'easter bearing down on us Monday and Tuesday!!! Where is that little critter from PA ????????????

Lots of winter fun, and I got an empty wallet at my favorite not so local HS. Bought code 83 track, a tortoise to play with and familiarize myself with operation and mountings. I also bought two Atlas turnouts, I am still not sure about using Atlas code 83 turnouts or the new Peco code 83 turnouts yet, still undecided. I am also undecided about using insulated or non-insulated frogs with my DCC wiring.

I heard from Fergie several times via email, as I had my Laptop with me, but there was no Hispeed enet service deep in the mountains, only dial-up modem at 20kb.....so slow that I could almost beat the email via smoke signal or dogsled. So I didn't go online to this forum at all....gee , I left when we were at page 305, now we are at......page 315 !!!!! Wow !!!

I see that Bergie sent Parker, aka Biggie Smallie, packing....I guess he hit the hornets nest with his big stick once too many times.

Tim: thanks for the driving concern...the trip went well most of the way. But when we got to Franconia Notch ( old man of the mountain ), we hit a white-out for about 10 miles, then we were Ok the rest of the way.


Fergie: Aye Captain...I'm givin ya all she's got!!!!!! We'll blow the phase array if I push her any more!!!

Matt: Aim your satellite antenna a little more towards the SW, you might pickup the US or Canada stations.

Tim: Is it too soon to start the animals two by two in to your Arc yet? We are seeing all the pictures on TV here on the East coast of the houses falling down the cliffs, the huge rock that they are trying to break apart before it crashes into homes on the other side of the highway.....really spectacular shots. We are happy to see that your family is Ok Tim, thank God !!!

Bergie looks like He’s getting things cleaned up. He’s kind of become a friend of mine and I know his home e-mail for the weekend. Somebody flag me in the shop here or by e-mail if I miss something that Bergie needs to know about and I’ll get in touch with him to make sure he sees it, but I bet he’ll be patrolling the place anyway once and a while. If you can provide links either in a post here or in an e-mail to me it would help. I might see the e-mail quicker.

Well, I’ll have a Fresh Squeezed OJ on ***’s bill, it’s his turn to pay today. I’ll also have a hamburger with cheese and a squirt of ketchup with a nice sweet pickle on the side.

Guess what day it is for those of you who live in here....... That right, Friday!!!!!! This means that it’s the Weekend! And for that I made some Cinnamon rolls, they should be done in a few minutes. I just hope you all don’t eat them right away, and I get to at lease try one. But, I really should get going, I’ve got modeling to do and things to plan for this weekend. Nope. I'm pretty sure that's the one on 610 Loop South at South Main. That's the one that Bellaire Roundhouse bought out and is now called Houston Roundhouse. Also a decent place with good selection.

But I think it's possible that Ben and/or some of his staff may have been involved in Trainsource. Teffy knows the story better. Papa Ben's store used to be Ben Pearlman's studio for production of video stuff. He converted it and had it totally redone as a train store.

Speaking of Teffy, where is our resident Santa Fe fan??
