Hi all

Currently up to my elbows in bits of Ikea wardrobe (my brother, the future engineering student, has given up...[:)]). There's doors and another shelf to attach to one, then another to build from the flat pack. Lessons learned so far include that if you fit the doors first the shelves won't go in, and that if you fit the clothes rail it pulls the sides in so the shelves won't go in. They're well-designed but I wi***hey'd mention this stuff in the instructions!

About the Fog Lights - I didn't realise they weren't fitted over there. John has it right, they're high-intensity (red) tail lights intended to stop people rear-ending slow moving vehicles in thick fog. I think they're now a legal requirement on new vehicles though front foglights are optional (usually only found on high-specification vehicles - my Disco doesn't have them but the next model up does - having said that, off road they're just something else to break as they hang under the bumper). Do you guys get reversing lights fitted as standard? Noticed philnrunt mentioning that he fitted an aftermarket one, so curious if they're not a standard fit. They make reversing at night (especially with a trailer on) a lot easier as you can see what you're about to hit!

Well, back to the piles of chipboard, screws, and weird-shaped bits of metal that according to the instructions will become a wardrobe, I'll believe it when I see it [:D].

Good morning, Zoe, are you awake yet? 'Cause I think I might need a cup of 50-50 regular coffee mixed with that weathering grade, to get me completely awake...[zzz] [|)] Oops, sorry, didn't mean to doze off on you there, Zoe. And could I have scrambled eggs and toast with some strawberry jam, since we seem to have an abundance of the jam today.[;)]

[soapbox] [Rant on] Mutter, mutter, [censored] backup beepers and dumpster trucks that come through at 5-[censored]-something in the morning. [|(] Couldn't get back to sleep after what sounded like at least the third one in my neighborhood. We sure must have clear and quiet air that early in the morning here. Didn't realize there were that many different dumpsters around here (that had to back up, at least).[/Rant off] But since I'm up, thought I'd come keep you company, Zoe. I'm sure even *** isn't up just yet. Matt might be, but his time zone's ahead of ours.

Philnrunt, we're all afraid like you that the Cornwallis' mishap might turn out to be [oops]Fergie-inspired. Oh, surely not! [swg] Well, I'm sure his ears have been burning lately with all our guesses...

Matt and Philnrunt, it might appear that the 'American way' of thought might be - If one really bright backup light is good, lots of 'em must be better, right? Pity any poor person trying to play 'ghosts' with night goggles who comes up behind those.

Our weather guesser is forecasting fairly clear today, with possible rain by the weekend. We had some upper level sNoah in the area that evaporated before it hit the ground yesterday, so I guess that's what happened to the possible sNoah my co-workers told me about yesterday. Hey, Tim - guess our forecaster is as (in)accurate as the west coast one, huh?[;)] But if we're not getting the wet or icy stuff, maybe at least our Coffee Shop patrons from the N.England/Nova Scotia area won't get hammered. Maybe it'll thaw out enough for the rescue crew to get to the Cornwallis, Fergie![}:)][;)]

Well, got my eggs and toast (and jam) finished, so I'll get going. Laundry trip awaits today, and it's my day(after being on-call) off. Going to call my friend Paul and see for sure if he can get my plywood cut to shape, then get a haircut, and probably read some MRR books and mags in the afternoon.

Blessings on everyone's events and stuff of the day,

matt: Our 1-ton has auto reversing lights, but it also has a pair of halogen lights mounted on the headache rack with a switch inside the cab, they're great when you're feeding cattle at night. The newer chevy's have front fog lights from the factory, but they don't last long on farm trucks, big weeds just knock them right out, and they drag off somewhere between the field and town.

Judging from all those late night posts yesterday, we might have to get us a neon sign that says "Open 24 Hours" We're just like WalMart!!!

Well, time to go to school now,

Morning all: Rain and fog, and when I took Kris' mom into thte Harbour for her weekly clinic, there were 6 cruisers and 3 SUVs in RCMP colours, plus a good number of plain clothers cars at the cop shop. Wonder what's up! (normal compliment 2 vehicles)

Paul and Jim:
QUOTE: The Cornwallis is dead in the water? I wonder if that has anything to do with a soldering iron.
QUOTE: Guess we'll have to check for news reports about the Cornwallis and see if they mention a soldering iron and/or an electrical cause for the ship's being 'stalled' in the ice. Kind of bad when the icebreaker needs help! Made me think of the car ad (Volkswagen?) several years back, that asked "Ever wonder how the snow plow driver gets to the snow plow?" (and showed him driving up in a VW)

Here's the latest from Fergie, to answer your question. Not soldering irons, that he's admitting to anyway[:D]
QUOTE: Good Morning Gents. Well they fixed us! The Terry Fox came alongside last night and lent us an Electrical Officer for an hour or two. Turns out the problem was a faulty circuit board, Duh!
Anyway we are now in open water heading for god knows were and in the middel of a storm. So
hopefully this will blow through quickly as it's awful lumpy right now. Later Gents Fergie

Paul:
QUOTE: So today I glued my hand with the hot glue.
Ouch! Not the really high temp stuff I hope!
Ed:

and here's a note from Chuck Butler of Everbank
QUOTE: I see where the equipment truck has arrived at the Cardinals spring training facility in Jupiter, Fl. Won't be long now, and the crack of the bats and the pops of the glove will be heard... I CAN'T WAIT!
I feel I should give a bible verse to herald the start of Spring Training, so if you would all turn please to your NIV translation of Proverbs 6:12-13 "A scoundrel and villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth, who winks with his eye, signals with his feet, and motions with his fingers......"[(-D]
Matt:
QUOTE: Do you guys get reversing lights fitted as standard?
Yes, and when you watch from the rear someone in an automatic transmission vehicle put same into drive, the back up lights flash as the lever passes through reverse! Our Ford van has spaces to fit front fog lights, filled on our model with plastic inserts that get scraped off in snowbanks along the driveway[V]

Thanks for the coffe, excellent as always, but now Imust get on with the rest of the day.

Good Morning Coffee Club!

No fog this morning, yea!!!!
And the drive in was not bad at all today, got into work on time!!!

How about a spot of green tea today, I need to relax the muscles a bit this morning!

I put down another couple of rows of tiles last night in the train room, after a two-day break and at it again the knees and back still feeling the work this morning.

Jim,
Thanks for the Rix website links, I like those structures, might just have to get one of those for my layout.

SilverSpike - I love Sweet Potatoes like that as well, but the restaurant we went to, makes some scrumptious Sweet Potato Fries.

JP,
Yea, Sweet Potato Fries are good, and they are heart healthy too. And for Weight Watchers they are less points, yum!!!

QUOTE: Railroading_Brit
Ryan, I agree about people not bothering with lights - we get it here too. Even worse are those who switch on their rear fog light then don't switch it off when the fog clears, so anyone behind ends up partially blinded. Strangely enough they often are the same ones driving at 40mph with a 10-car tailback (who can't see to overtake due to the red glow ruining their vision)...

Matt,
Yep, it never ceases to amaze me how some people will drive with no regard for other peoples life and safety, and putting themselves in harms way. BTW, I like your references to the “Red Coats”, when I have studied military history I have always wondered how those guys were able to fight with wearing all that heavy wool clothing for uniforms!

QUOTE: egmurphy
Have you checked out the following website? It has a bunch of trackplans for N scale starting as small as 2' x 4'.

Anyway, so now I’m snowed under with comments to respond to.

Ed,
Great web site, even for non-N scale devotees it has some great ideas for small layout designs.

Yep, I have committed to trying to read at least once a day now, or else it takes so long to play catch up! But, hey, the conversation is good!

QUOTE: trollyboy
Ryan hope you saw the post on your pulp car thread, take care of that it's a real piece of history treasure it.

Rob,
Thanks for the post on my thread with the pulpwood car. Yes, it is a keepsake item that has been cherished and will be for a long time. I have thought of reconditioning the piece, but I do like it just the way it is, a reminder of days gone by. BTW, how’s your layout coming along?

QUOTE: Noah Hofrichter
I also want to introduce my new website. www.freewebs.com/arkrailroadco So far all I've got is stuff all of you have all ready seen, but I'm working on it.

Noah,
I checked out your site and it looks like a great beginning! Thanks for sharing it with us. Keep us posted on updates with the site. BTW, the structure looks great!

Ryan:
The show that I told you about is outside and free, it's probably about 2 maybe 4 blocks long. Are you flying or driving? If you drive, talk to me as I'm in the tour business and have driven it many times. After all you HAVE to eat in the resturant mentioned in John Madden's book. It's a good mexican resturant in Van Horn. (Well for Ed it's Tex-Mex food.) Again, if you drive you'll be comming down I-10 and I'm only 11 miles off it so ask the wife if she'll give you 30 minutes. It's actually closer to come through Port Atrhur then go through Beaumont. When I went to Aggro's profile it wouldn't go back that far so I'm going to try it again.

Bob,
We are flying to Vegas, and then renting an SUV for the four corners driving tour. We thought about driving the whole way, but we were limited on time so chose the flying option. Where is Van Horn? The Mrs. has some cousins that live in the Houston and La Porte area, we visited them on the July 4th weekend last year, I am very familiar with the Port Arthur area. Yep, I-10 is a straight shot from New Orleans. There is an option to view archived posts within the profile, that is how I found the one you were looking for the other day.

QUOTE: fec153
Ryan, yours should get to you friday.

Flip,
Thanks again, looking forward to them!

Ryan, we're in the Blue Ridge mountains. They run from Virginia, on the east side of the Shennandoah Valley ( the Alleghanies are to the west of the valley) all the way down into north Alabama. The Great Smokies, in western NC and east Tennessee are a particular section of the Blue Ridge.

Tom,
How about that! The Mrs. and I spent our honeymoon in the Smoky Mountains and have gone back there with the kids for vacations twice since then. We love the area so much, we even thought of possibly moving up there after the kids fly the nest. Years ago I worked for a tree service company that would go up to the areas around Cashiers and Asheville and we would cut Christmas trees and drive them back to New Orleans during the Thanksgiving holiday. I remember a place in Ashville where we would have Thanksgiving dinner, the Daniel Boone Inn. It was great family dining at its best. Fond memories!

QUOTE: der5997
By Sunday morning the sea will be "smoking", which is an awesome sight, especially in a light offshore breeze, as you can see the ice fog rolling away from the shore. Drive safely.

John,
I bet that is a beautiful sight on the coastline!
No fog today, but that could change tomorrow, the temps are supposed to drop again tonight, so you never know from one day to the next what might happen. It does get thicker as you go over areas of water, parts of I-10 that cross Lake Pontchartrain are notorious for having super thick fog, and people still drive at 70 +, what are they thinking!

QUOTE: brclem
I have posted a new image of what I think is an alright idea for my layout on my new website. http://www.freewebs.com/brclem/ I hope people can see the image this time.

Brian,
Great start on the web site. The track plan kind of reminds me of the “time saver” and may prove to be a switching puzzle.

That’s enuf for now!

John, you'll have to fill us in with what the deal was on your local 'crime wave' (or maybe special on donuts? [;)]) in your area.[:)]

I never realized the Bible came down hard on third-base coaches.[}:)] Might have to ask our pastor about that one - he's a red-blooded Cardinals fan (as well as Rams) [;)]

I'm not so sure all the beep-beep-beep-beep...'s I heard were just from one dumpster truck. If it was, that was one busy truck! As you may have surmised, I am *not* a morning person (not before at least 6:30 or 7 local time, anyway). [|)][zzz]

When Fergie gets back, we'll have to grill him - still seems a bit suspicious that it was something electrical that stopped the Cornwallis. Hmmm...[}:)][:-^] Like you said, that's what he's admitting to for now.

Got laundry done, and I'm at a local coffee shop. Haircut about noon, and stop to check out what's new at LHS on the return trip home.[:)][:D]

Everyone have a blessed day and keep MRR'ing,

Good afternoon guys, rough day today. The storm last night caused all the roads and driveway to ice-up real fast. Many accidents around here today, even a death in the Boston area! My son went over the embankment of his spiral driveway on a long stretch of ice. It took us 2 hours to get the car out of the deep snow, off logs and rocks and onto the flatbed tow truck pulling him up out of the woods. The Ford Crown Vic seemes to have survived Ok, but received dents and dings and body bruises, the undercarriage looked Ok.

The wife and I will be headed up to the great North Woods of New Hampshire tomorrow for a week of fun and snowmobiling etc. at Bartlett, NH. Of course I will be visiting my favorite HS there too.

I don't think I will be online too much because there is no Hi-speed enet at the place, and after I climb Bear Mountain with a wire in my teeth up a tall pine at the top, I might get a signal. The phone modem is at best 28Kb, so if the WiFi signal from the mountain top can get through, I might be in business, but that is a BIG "if" in such a mountaneous area.

I received an email from Fergie, the problem was a circuit board, he is underway again.

See you all later, Blessings to all,
Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Ed, I was going to do that yesterday after my post and then I realized what time it was. Did it first thing today, it’s there now.

Well, I took the Placement test for High school English. I think I did pretty well, it was easier than I was expecting.

I better get going, the layout calls.

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Another warm day down here in (what, at least for another few weeks, is) Paradise. We’re actually at that nice time of the year when, while it warms up considerably during the day, it cools off sufficiently in the evening to be comfortable. In fact, sitting out in the swing on the terrace in the evening with a cup of good coffee (from Veracruz, of course) or your adult beverage of choice is really enjoyable. [^]

Spent most of the morning again out at the grove. With the amount of OJ and fresh oranges that you guys go through here in the Coffee Shop, keeping traffic moving on the FCVN is a full time job {{{gasp}}}. [:0]

Very little work done on the layout today, just enough to be able to say I did something. I did daydream a lot about what I’m supposed to be doing, and what it will look like in a few weeks!

So Fergie put the Cornwallis out of commission trying to solder a DCC chip into the ship’s control circuit??? Is that what we’re hearing here? [(-D]

QUOTE: Good Morning Gents. Well they fixed us! The Terry Fox came alongside last night and lent us an Electrical Officer for an hour or two. Turns out the problem was a faulty circuit board…
Yeah, right, blame it on the vendor. Was it a Lenz decoder he was installing? Obviously the Cornwallis isn’t “Plug & Play”. [;)]

Tom, I’m glad your outing with Bill went well. Often it works out like that, if you have something interesting enough to do, you can avoid thinking about the weather, and the day turns out great. It’s nice that there is still enough of the old infrastructure in place to make research fun.

QUOTE: der: Incidentaly we were at Stamford Bridge in 1966 for the 900th. There was a re-enactment of the battle…
Must have been something to see. I’ll assume they also did a re-enactment at Hastings? Incidentally, for my first job out of university I was assigned to a project in Hastings. Of course that Hastings was in West Virginia.

Brian, That plan would work fine, and allow you both some continuous running and some switching. You’re right, that’s an improvement on the website you had before. Nice storyline……. [tup]

It would probably be deemed to be in violation of the Geneva Convention. Something about violating their rights as POW’s.

Looks like you got some responses to your post over on the Trains Magazine forum. Too bad it looks like you’re going to be in the middle of a fairly barren spot, railroad-wise. We were out there this summer and did 3 National Parks plus two tourist railroads. Unfortunately it’s off season for D&S and the Cumbres & Toltec.

QUOTE: (CG)Jim: And Ed, would there be a special team that is starting spring training today?
What an opening!!! Glad you asked the question. I can’t speak for other teams, but The World Champion Boston Red Sox opened their Spring Training Camp today. A few changes in the pitching rotation including letting go of Pedro Martinez, they picked up Edgar Rentaria as shortstop, most of the rest of last year’s starting lineup seems to be intact. Signed Varitek to a multi-year contract and named him Captain. Same outfield. Still have David Ortiz as DH. [:D]

Whoops, sorry, got carried away. I know, “Take it to a sports forum!” [swg]

QUOTE: der: "A scoundrel and villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth, who winks with his eye, signals with his feet, and motions with his fingers......"
I’m amazed that they had baseball that far back. And the third base coaches were like that even then? [:D]

QUOTE: grayfox: My son went over the embankment of his spiral driveway on a long stretch of ice. It took us 2 hours to get the car out of the deep snow, off logs and rocks and onto the flatbed tow truck pulling him up out of the woods.
Ouch! [:0] Glad he wasn’t hurt. Slick ice is really treacherous. Once you start to skid it’s often too late to do anything, especially on a slope. Enjoy your week up north. Sounds like fun. And a LHS to boot?!

QUOTE: Noah: Well, I took the Placement test for High school English. I think I did pretty well, it was easier than I was expecting.
Good for you. Congrats.

Brian, you’re logo isn’t coming through. I get the dreaded ‘red x’.

You guys all have a good evening. Take care.

Hasta mañana,

Ed

Yeah, right, blame it on the vendor. Was it a Lenz decoder he was installing? Obviously the Cornwallis isn’t “Plug & Play”. [;)]

I guess that means Fergie's article for MRR on re-fitting older engines won't be going into the next issue? [;)] Oh, darn![}:)]

It would probably be deemed to be in violation of the Geneva Convention. Something about violating their rights as POW’s.

And how many glue sticks would you be able to carry on your ammo belt (especially in hot weather)? [swg]

Ed- You beat me to the question re- Fergie. Your way is funnier than what I was going to say. I'll[bow] to your quip.
Goodnight all. Oh, by the way- Deb's neck and shoulder pain is gone.
Many thanks to all for the prayers and concern.
Respectfully,

Maybe Fergie was trying to melt there way out of the ice with his soldering iron and it overloaded. Could happen.

Just a short one tonight and to bed. I'm pooped.

Good evening all: I'll have a hot chocolate please Chloe, there's packs of sugar free in back of the cupboard next to Greg's soggy bickies[(-D]
Ed:
QUOTE: Must have been something to see. I’ll assume they also did a re-enactment at Hastings?

A bit tame as regards numbers, and the only guy on a horse was Harold! However, the Danes put up a strong resistance, falling back to higher ground (now a farmstead) when they had lost the bridge. The river is not very wide, but is quite deep, so a real obstacle.
Incidentally, where we lived in before coming to Canada was a community in the North East, not far from where Harold's elder brother was assasinated. (A fascinating piece of road, if you are into English history. You turn off the highway past a castle with the smallest extant Norman keep in the country, go down to the Tyne river, and Harold's brother was murdered at the bridge that is still there, go up out of the valley, and you come to a T junction. The road facing you was built on top of the route of Hadrian's Wall in 1745 to put down the rebellion of Bonnie Prince Charlie. The rather military looking farm buildings on your left are built from a Roman mile castle on the Wall. And you haven't gone more than about 5 miles from where we lived in a burb built onto a mining village from the industrial revolution coal fields, now mined out.)
***: Glad your son wasn't hurt. Temperatures dropping here tonight. However, the really cold they forecast a day or two ago for this weekend don't seem to be guessed any more. No smoking sea this time, I expect.
It's bedtime again, I see, so Goodnight all, and God Bless.

Good evening all! Zoe, I'll have one of Ed's famous OJ's - on Paul, who apparently turned over a new page for us.[:)]

Brian, if you have a raiimages account, you could post a copy of the logo and link to it from there (but use /albums/ instead of /gallery/ in the URL link). Email me if you want and we can get it working. I'm going to be sending you an email with an idea for your layout.

Hopefully, Fergie and the Cornwallis will both be back safe and sound soon enough. May have to send him to help Ed make sure the FCVN can keep up with the shipments. Either that, or we'd have to go back to just drinking coffee and such.

Noah, great news on your test - you're on a roll, young'un! [:D][bow]

Good that your son wasn't hurt (other than possible embarassment), ***.
Hard to keep it under control when the road twists and turns (and is icy).

Phil, good to hear Deb's doing better - give her a hug from all of us.

Time to head out, Chloe. I washed out my cup and put it on the shelf where you've been keeping our coffee cups/mugs. Now why does it feel like Sunday evening instead of Thursday? [%-)]

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau
