Teffy; Tell you mom that I have a hearing problem to. Too many hours of the wop, wop, wop. Any way, I was driving Mary Ann out of the house listening to the tv. Too much volumn for her. I found a set of wireless head phones at Radio Shack. I think that they cost about $40. Now I can actually hear what's going on better than with the sound turned up. It's really great. The VA got me hearing aids but I seldom wear them. With the loss of my left ear drum I can't use one there anyway. Let her know that a fellow hearing imparied is thinking of her and wishes her well. Ask her to give those ear phones a try. She may really like them.

My vote is for Black Adder, Keeping Up Appearances, and Are You Being Served?

Also they have tables and chairs and plenty of good magizines. I like to take Mary Ann and have a bit of breakfast there on Sunday. We sit and talk and read and watch the world go by. Water has gone down alot and we now have 2 and 1/2" of snow, yard looks funny with lots of snow in some places and nothing where the water was. Haven't had water like this in 10 years. Got started with my layout again though, putting the trackboard down on the open grid. Should get enough done to start laying the track on Saturday.

Good Mornin' Everybody,
It's a gray chilly morning in the mountains. It cooled off considerably last night and we're supposed to have normal January weather for the next week or so. The coffee is very good this morning and it's going to be a good day.

I've got a few errands and light duty chores to get done this morning and then it will be time to start on some trees. I pulled out and cleaned up some Supertree material last night. I need to start it soaking in diluted matt medium before I head into town. That seals and preserves them very nicely. Kind of like treating lichen with glycerin except that it lasts longer.

Teffy, how is your Mom doing? I got a chuckle over the comment about everybody mumbling. That sounds familiar.

Kolja94 That will be a pretty drastic climate change, from Whidbey to Fallon. Years ago I had a friend who was in P-3s He went from NAS Jacksonville to somewhere in Mass. His first winter up there was a real learning experience.

Grayfox 1119, good choices. You won't regret the small additional expense. If my railroad ever expands into the adjacent room in the basement ( currently Shawna's dance studio) I'll use 3/4" plywood and 30" curves.

JDolan, I'm glad the water stayed outside where it belongs. Actually, it doesn't belong in the yard either, but much better there than in the house. I had one flood in the basement, right after I moved into the house. It was before I started the railroad, but it was a mess. I made a lot of improvements to the drainage immeadiately thereafter and everything important is always well up off the floor. Floods are no fun.

Luct, how is your wife doing? I hope she gets through this quickly. Those fortunate folks who've never had kidney stones really can't imagine how painful they are.

Paul, the wop, wop, wop, and lots of other noises from that time and place would really do a job on hearing. I could have gotten a small disability when I got out, IF I'd been willing to stay at El Toro long enough to get it processed. They said it probably would have taken a month or so to get it done. It was right before Christmas, and a week before my daughter's first birthday. I thought about it for maybe 2 nanoseconds and went on home.

Our favorite coffee place is a restaurant called the Sawmill Place. They're open only for breakfast and it's great. Wonderful coffee and great food. The bacon and sausage
are apple smoked and made locally. The pancakes and french toast are to die for. It's not the place to go if your worried about calories or cholesterol, but it sure is good.

Better go for now. It's time to get some stuff done.

Good morning guys.......boy do I need a coffee this morning. We had heavy rain last night and early today, and I had some water come into the basement. Not too bad, small seepage where the floor meets the walls in a couple of spots. The soil in the town is all hardpan clay, so water does NOT drain well at all. I have perimeter drains everywhere, but years ago they did not use silt blankets around the pipes, so I think after 38 years some of the drain pipes have blockages.

Cold is no better today, my nose is running faster than a big boy up the hills of Wyoming.
I am trying some new stuff the wife bought, we will see if this stops the cold in its tracks.

Most of the snow melted last night, we had a very thick fog. The temps is back down from 60 to 27 degrees right now, and the rain has changed to snow just 40 miles west of here in the Berkshires and moving this way fast.

Did't get a chance to work in the new train room today "yet", still doing water and drainage clearing in the yard......boy is it fun working in the pouring rain with a headcold.

Tim, I'm not surprised that you heard me sneeze all the way out there, I had quite a sneezing episode last night.

Thank you everyone for the well wishing on this darn cold, I thought I was going to be lucky as everyone else in the extended family had one over the holidays, but it got me!!

Okay, I'm expediting a tankcar load of fresh OJ to you. Massive doses of vitamin C are called for. Hope you have the Kleenex with the aloe vera in the paper so that it's kind to your schnoz.

You asked about tools. Here is a list of some that I suggested a couple of weeks ago in another thread. I can make a few suggestions on mrr tools that you will find useful. You'll eventually collect a lot, but here are some of the more basic ones that you need to start accumulating:

set of misc small pliers
set of jewelers screwdrivers
set of jewelers files
tweezers (a set of different ones, if possible)
scale rule
set of xacto knives (I'd recommend the wood boxed set with three different sized handles and an assortment of blades - but to start at least get one handle and a bunch of #11 blades)
Razor saw (w/ miter box, if possible)
pin vise and some small drill bits
small pencil soldering iron
NMRA track guage
sprue cutter (optional - I like it)
Xuron (or other make) rail cutter (use it only to cut rail)

A Dremel (or Dremel knockoff) is nice, but not an absolute necessity.

You might also check the grade up to the foundation all around the house (especially near the spots where the water seeped in) It's meant to be "Up to" but can over time become either level, or worse, "Down towards" the foundation. The only leak we ever had in Spruce Grove was caused by this negative grade "creep".
In that house we had installed a check valve in the sewer line when the house was built. Best additional $75 to that project, I think. I've mentioned this before, but repeat it now for the benefit of those "new to class'! [:D]

As for tools for the RR.
Clamps for holding the bench work together while you work on it. These will come in handy later, get lots, and several sizes. Both G clamps and the jaws type are handy.

A dedicated flush cut rail cutter. Don't yield to the temptation to use it for other cutting jobs.

I've not used laser levels, but find that a variety of levels of different lengths are helpful. One of the better buys I made in that regard was a small level that's meant to fit on a string (this is definitely pre laser technology!) It's only about 2 1/2 " long, so can fit in lots of small places where you need to check level, but the other ones are too large. This one is handy also for making a grade checking level.

A cordless drill.

A table saw is nice, if you have the room.
A jig saw
A razor saw

A solder gun like the Weller 100/140 Watt is handy. A lower powered iron say 20/30 Watt is better for smaller jobs and electronics. Use Rosin Flux , or rosin core solder, at any rate a NON ACID flux.

Needle nose pliers.

A good source of light and some magnification. I use a desk lamp that has a magnifying glass, Bob goes for a visor arrangement.

A cutting mat to put on your workbench.

A pin vise and a set of miniture drill bits (#s 61-80)

A "hands free" gadget that has at least 2 alligator clips that can be adjusted to hold stuff at various angles. I use mine a lot to hold wires next to parts for soldering. Mine also has a magnifier, but I find it not too convenient.

Start collecting storage jars, tubs, cans etc for parts and scenery materials. These are best with lids, and probably the size that would hold 1lb of some foodstuff is about right. Coffee cans are better for rocks etc.

Mixing bowls and sieves of various sizes. Garage sales are a good source.

A pump action spray bottle. The squeeze or trigger action type I find spurt large blobs sooner or later. The one I use is a FINESSE 300ml non-aerosol hair spray bottle. Even that leaks at the top, and so I find a rag held around the neck soaks this up while the spraying job ("wet water" for soaking scenery before applying glue, matte medium or whatever) continues.

Clean rags. Avoids the panic use of the household's bathroom towels. This preserves domestic harmony.[:D]

A Coupler height guage

A set of miniature screw drivers.

A set of miniature files. I got mine in a tools surpluss place. It has 5 different shapes of file.

A small metal spatula, the kind of thing artists use to mix/scrape paints.

The foresight to put in your layout lighting and room ceiling before you get the layout to the stage where doing so is, how shall we say, inconvenient! [(-D]

A supply, available from Canada, of ROBERTSON square slot screws and the drivers for same. These hold the screw onto the driver in any position, and are so much more convenient than straight slot, or Philips.

That's a first run through. Lots more can be added, no doubt.

You guys are aware that our Fergie is 43 years and 1 day old today. He's about the same as my oldest. Remember it's January 13 as I wont remember it till the end of this post.

Mom's surgery was this morning and only took 55 minutes, she is feeling good but is unhappy with the eye patch. Thanks for all the concern.

My 3/4" plywood is supported by 1X4's and their are only a few things that are deeper then that so if it rolls uder the fascia support it doesn't hit anything else.

I also found a desk chair that someone was throwing away because it was broken on the tilt back, I took the seat off and put on a piece of plywood for a seat and a back and it slides all over under the layout. Stephanie calls it the old man express.

When you start laying track I can't imagine getting along without a Dremel with a flex shaft, it also comes in handy around the house.

Also one of those wooden rules about a yard long (Hardware stores, fabric shops, those sorts of places use them for advetising. ) They are great for converting into a compass for laying out curves. A nail through at the zero end, and holes just big enough for a pencil (tight fit) drilled at the radii you think you'll be using most.

Too slippery out for safe walking tonight. So Rosie-the-dog loses out on a second walk today, and I am off to the new "fitness centre" with Kris. It would have opened earlier last Fall if someone hadn't forgotten to order the equipment. [sigh]

Well, I don't have much, but it's Friday!!!!! I've got the preliminary ARK decal scheme going, I think it will just be a slanted "ARK" letter with "The Appleton, Rivermooe, and Keenville" lettering below it. On boxcars I may include the slogan(to be determend) on the other side of the car. The lettering will usually be white or black. Car colors will follow the same scheme as the WSOR, Blue for boxcars, Red for RBL's, Black for gondolas, and Grey with black lettering for covered hoppers. I hope to include some metalic stripes on the Gondola. I hope to include it as a pack, and trade it with others who ahve free lanced roads sometime. It'll probably be a few month before I get the whole thing worked out, finding a person to print them, ect.

Well, I better get moving, I got a few things to do, and maybe a hour of work on the Building to night if I can spare the time. See ya!

The kids bought me a DVD player for Christmas. Cost them $19.95. Cheap skates. It was really a great gift and works really well. The cost of electronics just keeps going down. Of course when it gets to the point that a person can afford it they come up with something to make what you just got obsolete. You just can't win.

Tom; The Sawmill Place sounds good. I wi***hat they would get a good breakfast place here. I didn't do anything about my hearing until a couple of years ago. Mary Ann and a friend who was one of the crew chiefs I flew with finally pushed me into going to the VA. I ended up with a 40% disability. Fancy that. All I wanted was hearing aids. So it isn't too late.

***; MR ran a coupl of short articles recently on what tools are good to have. I think that they were in the Nov& Dec issue. I don't really have anything to add to what has been suggested. After 50+ years I've got so many that I've lost track of what I have. The little level is a called a string line level. Handy but superceded by the laser level. I have a laser level and it is really handy. I can shoot a spot all the way accross the room if needed and don't have to mess with a string.

Mitch; I like the Sponge Bob loco. I've been spending the last few days putting a new nose on the Sponge Bob figure at the park. Someone broke the old one off and made off with it. Fun,Fun,Fun.

If you want to save a tree or two, try opening up your browser to a fresh window for the page you want to refer to. (page 232 in this case) Then you can flip back and forth between the two. I get to the Coffee Shop through my browser's "History" (I'm using Netscape, so that's under "GO" for me) I click on the forum page I want in that history list, and bingo, there we all are! If you are coming in from the forum General Discussion > Coffee Shop, when it opens click back to the page you want. Either way, you have your page 233 open, and the other page too. You can do this for as many pages as your browser allows open at the same time.

It was my first visit to the fitness centre. A bit of a bust because the evening is crowded, so the best machines are heavilly booked. Also, the van has apparently developed a quirk in which the "door open" light is on all the time the ignition is on, although all the doors are firmly shut, and the interior lights go out as they should, but later than usual. Then, when the ignition is off, the interior lights are on all the time. So, I had to deal with that in the middle of the session, someone having come in to report that the lights were on in the van. It's in the garage now with the trickle charger on the battery so that it doesn't run down over night. I've got the light over the cargo door switched off, the bulb out of the Passenger light, but that leaves three other bulbs to get at before I can leave it parked for any length of time. What's the saying? Friends don't let friends drive a Ford! Any wisdom or insight into this condition would be welcome. Who knows when I can get an appointment to get it fixed. No blood sugar reduction from the exercise at the centre, probably because of the stress [V], and I didn't even have dessert first!

Thanks for the virtual 100% Columbian with the 18% cream, but now I must get some real tea!

I got Kadee's put on all the rock cars (11) today, so now I have a large pile of dummy couplers to put in my junkyard around the backshop. If I can talk dad into getting IM wheels for the set, I'll also have enough wheels to make a carload.

John and Rob: Around here DVD players are 34.95 at Wal Mart, might be a little higher some places, but still pretty cheap.

Tom: The only coffee place in Calumet is Evans' Grocery & Cafe, matter of fact it is the only store, and one of only two eating establishments (they don't really fall in the classification of restaraunts) in town. But, like any quality coffee shop, you can get all of the best BS from the best BSing farmers around[:P].

Now, back to the real world, or not, do any of y'all get the Last of the Summer Wine? It is one of the local Britcoms, but it airs every night instead of only on Sundays.

Better go, the dog has showed up to help again, and petting and typing at tye same time doesn't mix
