Sure enough, the links don't work.  Sad b/c I was hoping for a free way to create car cards.  Perhaps excel is the right approach.

Hello Dave Husman.

I'm trying to find a computer program I can use to generate WayBills and Car Cards for a small layout and railroad. The Yahoo links in your post take me only to a Yahoo.com portal page and not to anywhere you intended. Can you please direct me and correct me?

Thank you,

Stan Burruss

Stan, considering that the original post you're replying to is from 2008, I doubt you're going to get a reply. Those files are likely gone, and even if you could get them, the program probably wouldn't run on today's computers. Sorry.

Car Card and Waybill generator freeware for MS Access 2k

Howdy.  First off, excuse the cross posting in several venues.

I have over the last several years posted several versions of the car card and waybill generator databases I have built in Microsoft Access.  I have recently posted  my latest version in the files sections of the CarCards and Rwy-Ops-IndustrialSIG Yahoo Groups in a CCGv7 folder.

Car Card Generator v7 has many improvements over the last version I posted (v3.4).  the major reason I rewrote it was I wasn't happy with the way waybills were created.  I wanted something that allowed the user to look only for those industries that used a particular commodity or type.   CCGv7 achieves that goal for me.

This application is designed for my operation and my use primarily, so there are a couple quirks that are distinctly mine.  The  major one being that I use "blocks" to drive my switching, routing and train building processes (just like the prototype does).  A block is a code or name given to a group of cars that will be handle together as a group on the train.  For example if you have 10 cars in the yard for Houston, you could put them together on one train and it would be a Houston block, or if you model Chicago and there was a car for Los Angeles, it might have an LA destination but be in a WEST or ATSF block.  Way handy for yard switching and train building.

Some features of the new version:

-         Improved definition of the cars and commodities an industry uses

-         Improved input of waybills

-         Improved printing of waybills (multiple sheets can be printed at the same time)

-         Expanded roster information with more DCC related info

-         Ability to put photos on equipment cards

-         Ability to define and manage multiple rosters (you can designate separate rosters for different scales, different eras, or for clubs, different members)

-         Expanded reports to trouble help with waybill creation

-         Expanded inventory to include rosters, structures, electronics and library items

-         Expanded inventory reports

The car cards are 2 in x 3.5 in, and the waybills are 1.75 in x 2.5 in and can be up to 4 moves per waybill.  The car cards have a simple fold up pocket that is taped on the sides.

As always the application is not compiled so it can be modified by the users to meet their specific needs.

NOTE- NOTE-NOTE-NOTE-NOTE-NOTE

This is a MS Access Database application.  You MUST have MS Access 2000 or newer installed on your computer to run it.  Excel will NOT open it.  Word will NOT open it.  There are NO open source databases that will open it.  MS Access is sold as a standalone program or as part of MS Office Professional. It is a relatively common program in business and educational software collections.

The application is distributed free, you must join either the CarCards or Rwy-Ops-IndustrialSIG Yahoo Group to download it, joining those is free.

In either Group go to the group's home page, to the files section, to the CCGv7 folder.  In there will be a MS Word document with more detailed instructions and a zipped file (about 3.5 MB).  Save the zipped file to computer and extract it.  If you are using an older version of my CCG there are instructions on how to import some of the rosters and look up tables.

While I will try to answer any questions on any of the groups or forums, I monitor the Car Cards and Rwy-ops-industrialSIG groups most frequently and and will provide the most timely response on those forums.

Enjoy,

Dave H.
