Well. I finally went and bought myself one of the new N scale Athearn Union Pacific Challengers with sound earlier tonight. Altogether it ran me about $305.00... The catch is, I'm going to have to sale my UP 2-8-8-2 and UP 4-8-2 in order to pay for it. I've been wanting one for a good while now, and almost bought a Big Boy, but then wanted one that could pull both passenger cars and freight.
Anyone out there own one of these locos ?. If so, what do you think about it ?.

Some bonehead just paid $1,800 on eBay for a ConCor Big Boy... Try selling it over there, maybe lightning will strike twice!!

I have the HO version of the Genesis Challenger (Rio Grande 3800 series, natch!), and if your N scale is anything like it, you got yourself a winner! Beautifully detailed, smooth runner, pulls like a team of oxen. Some people have complained about the sound, I understand--especially the whistle, which sounds kind of 'underwater', but it sounds pretty authentic to me, at least as I remember the Challenger when it was out here in Sacramento for Railfair, some years back.
So, enjoy! Sorry you have to get rid of your other two steamers to pay for it, though.
But as I said, if it's anything like mine, it will pull the paint off the walls!

Well as for a big boy pulling passenger, I beleive there is a photograph of one pulling a ton of troop cars during WWII
I can believe it, I know her ! I still have to send her a check every month.
When you love steam locomotives, sometimes the "gotta have it" bug bites, and only the "got it" can cure ya'.
