Does anyone know where I can find information on Prototype build dates? I want to keep in era and was looking for some rolling stock on Ebay but in most cases sellers don't list era type information.... I'm 'doing' N Scale...

Ask the seller for the information, and a close up picture of that area of the car so you can read the dates your self. If they will not send it too, pick another seller.
Some manufacturers provide information on the data they put on frieght cars, most do not.
