I have an old 1980s era bachmann N scale Amtrak dome car (It has the full lenghth dome with upper seating and a lower sunken window section /seating one the second level in the middle of the car.) The vestibules and car roof hight are identical to standard passenger cars, but it looks like there may have been a lower area for seating in the middle.
I received this thing years ago at Christmas from a relative that knew I liked trains, but didn't know I was doing HO and that I didn't have any other Amtrak equipment. Now that I am doing N scale, I'd like to get some use out of it. I am planning on putting together an "Excursion" train or dinner train, etc...I am going to be detailing it and repainting it with a freelance regional railroad theme. I was wondering what era these cars originated in and if it was before Amtrak? I am hoping that might be equipment that was purchased and redone for Amtrak, but due to the fact this car has two different levels, I'm thinking it is fairly modern. Thanks as always ----Rob
I'll answer this, knowing that someone with a lot more background on this car will also respond...it's a model of a 1950's-era Santa Fe prototype, some of which survived no the 70s and 80s. Believe it was called a Superdome and/or Pleasuredome, and built by Budd.

Give this man a cigar!... That's absolutely right. They were once Santa Fe Pleasuredomes that were inherited by Amtrak and repainted. I've got old Santa Fe video showing these type cars used in the Super Chief.
