0-8-0 Switcher photo
Posted by jacon12 on Tuesday, February 20, 2007 3:30 PM

While photographing some of my locos today I came to one of my favorites, a P2K switch engine.  Looking at it through the camera's viewfinder it looked small compared to the larger diesels that I'd been shooting.  It occurred to me that I'd never actually seen the prototype in person and I thought about how big it would be if I were standing beside it.  I found a HO scale fella, put him in the shot for refererence and here it is..

It seems to make a difference when you've got 'somebody' alongside the model.

Jarrell,

It's funny you should post this.  I picked up a brand spankin' new one of these beauties from Empire Northern last week at a very good price.  When I got it on the layout, I was astonished how tall it actually was.  (It was as tall, if not taller, than my 2-8-2 Mike.)  I had it in my mind that the 0-8-0s were slightly more "diminutive" in size.  Obvioiusly, by the photo, this is NOT the case.

Thanks for posting the picture.  Here's mine sitting in front of my freight depot with an empty load (out of camera shot):

I know what you mean, Tom... they're bigger than they look.  I'd sure like to see a 1:1..  Smile [:)]

I just did a quick search on the Internet but I can't seem to locate an actual 0-8-0 preserved anywhere.  Anyone know for sure if one exists, or were they all sadly scrapped?

Looking good guys!

So long as this has turned into a "show me your USRA 0-8-0" thread, here's one of mine:

I added a LITTLE more detailing to the stock P2K engine, and decalled it for the P&PU, the Peoria area belt line. I've got two of these engines done currently, with a third 0-8-0 and a USRA 0-6-0 waiting for the treatment.

Thanks for posting your photos and the links!  Those drawings look great, I'll have to print'em out.

Selector, I'm not believing it but your link took me to where this one is located right in my home state...

You know where I'll be headed soon!

Thanks for the link, Crandell.  I actually checked steamlocomotive.com but missed the "survivor" link at the top.  I didn't realize that you could do a search on it, either.  Cool! Smile [:)]Thumbs Up [tup]

I bought the P2k 0-8-0 decorated as New Haven 3405.  I found a photo of the prototype, but does anyone know what ever became of it?  Scrapped, I presume.  In MY railroad, it lives on pulling a tourist train of New Haven and Rutland heavyweights.

Very nice Bash!!!!!!!  Wow! With a different tender and that Bachmann cab it could have kind of an AT&SF look to it.  I wonder how the P2K 0-6-0 might look with that cab. Bruce

The Bachmann looks great!  How does she run?

Great photos too!

"The Bachmann looks great!  How does she run?"

It runs exceptionally well because it is a Proto 2000 Heritage 0-8-0 with only a Bachmann cab added to it. (Actually my Bachmann Spectrum 2-8-0 runs pretty good too.)

The 2-8-0 probably looks a little funny without the cab though  Big Smile [:D]

Nice job on the CP unit.  I will be doing something like that at some future date with mine as well.

The Standard USRA 0-8-0 is 15' tall over the stack according to the drawing in Model Railroad Cyclopedia Vol 1.   They were about a foot shorter than most heavy mainline steam.
