Hi Guys,
I've been busy up till now scratching a Working Caboose and while I'm waiting for the trucks and couplings to arrive I'm wondering what to put in the open space between the hut and locker.
I've already thought about putting handrails down each side and maybe adding a few barrels, buckets and tools. But what would you guys detail this caboose with to make it more realistic of a working protoype.
Thanks,
Ian
If instead of putting handrails on the side, you put a single handrail down the center (perhaps with an opening to go from one side to the other), it would be easier for the crews to load those barrels, tools, extra couples etc.
Just throwing it out there...

I'd look at adding some side and end sills. A brakewheel would add to the model and a painted or tarpaper roof on the cabin end would add a nice touch.
I know it's not the same thing, this is a transfer caboose, but notice the details on it. You can transfer some of this to your model.
I like the idea of the guard rail down the middle. You could also add some low removable boards on both sides to act as a curb to keep the loose tools and such on the deck. Just a thought.

It needs "stuff" and damage. Paint spills, tools, lantren, shovel, gouges. The box needs hinges and a handle. There could be trash and a pile of spikes. Work areas are for work, not show and are only "picked up" the day they are delivered new.
That is a great model. Wonderful Idea. I will be waiting to see the next step of construction and finish.

And so you shall; the handrail is on (the box lid and hut roof are detachable, so I can keep on adding stuff inside them) and the ideas you guys have given me for things to go in this caboose are great. There's a national exhibition coming up so that's probably where I'll get most of the detail items from.
Maybe this can give you some ideas.
