Basic controller on a wire?

I have looked and looked. I want a simple HO controller (not DCC) on a telephone-type wire so I can move from one end of my layout to the other. The entire layout is ony 14 feet long, so I am talking only 5-6 feet from the base station. The only ones I can find are out of production (CMI Hogger) or are for fancy DCC layouts, or look like somebody is making them in his garage. Has anyone seen anything, under $100, that does this?

mrc makes the control master 20 but it is $200 in the walthers cat. you may be able to get it cheaper from an on line discounter or ebay.
