Bar Mills Kits ?
Posted by Train Fan on Friday, January 19, 2007 10:23 AM

Was wanting anybodys opnion on the Bar Mills Kits. Can somebody post pictures of the kits they have built so far. Any feedback would really be helpful and appreciated. Also information on what type and colors of stains or paints they used too.    Sincerly,      Train Fan

Train Fan,

I have not put one together yet but they are beautiful kits.  Don't overlook the American Model Builder kits.  They are cheaper (in price) but still very nice looking when completed.

Bar Mills' kits are first rate in my book. I have built several for my layout and have been very pleased with the results each time. For finishing, my personal preference is to use Floquil paints on these models but I've recently also begun to employ a wood-aging/peeling paint technique which uses water-based paint with washes of alcohol, producing excellent results. However, when using water-based paints you really need to do extra bracing on the interior walls.

Below is a shot of a Bar Mills' Shipyard Brewery model that I built recently. Click on the image to enlarge it.

Beautiful structure! I'd swear I was looking at my dad's '49 Buick sitting in front.

AMB, except for their very earliest models, are wonderful kits.  Bar Mills is close to AMB, but the couple of kits I've built required "touches" to a few parts, typically related to door and window parts.  Nevertheless, Bar Mills kits are worthwhile, and I recommend them.
