Athearn Genesis Challenger...
Posted by challenger3802 on Tuesday, December 19, 2006 11:59 AM

Hi Guys,

I have one of these beasts that will not program and was thinking along the lines of just replacing the decoder for motor control, but say leaving the sound decoder alone - it's fine for my standards (and I can't afford a Tsunami anyway!)

So my question is: How do I get to the decoder to be able to replace it?  I'm gathering the connecting socket on the tender takes the motor connection, pickups (some of them at least), and lighting functions to the body of the engine, leaving the tender having just the sound module.

A series of pictures with really detailed instructions of how to get the tender and/or loco housing apart would be really useful.  The maual that came with the challenger has a very detailed diagram showing the model in exploded form, but no instructions for how to easily undo the thing.

I'm guessing that one of you guys has done this already, I just hope you took pictures at the same time!

For those who are bound to ask, the decoder going in would be a high-end spec from one of the good manufacturers; possibly Digitrax, Lenz or Zimo? I dunno which but it gives you an idea.

Thanks,

Ian

Ian,

Do a search of this forum for "Genesis Challenger wire harness".

No photos, but a good detailed description of how to replace the decoder in the genesis challenger.
