How well does Athearn do in this line? Or anybody elses RS-2 for that matter. Thanks!

Athearn does not make an RS2 - they have an RS3.  Kato has done a RS2 in HO, and P1K currently has a HO RS2 available.  Atlas also has a RS3 available.  I have the RSC2 versions from both Kato and P1K - the Kato is heavier and will pull more.

If you're modelling a specific road you may want check if their RS-2s were roller or friction bearing equipped. I think the P1K models are all roller bearing trucks, while the Katos are road specific.

The Katos, though out of production for some time, pop up on e-bay from time to time and are excellent models.

Good Luck,

I have three Kato RS-2's that I scapped up on e-bay.  They pop up from time to time and can be quite reasonable (2 I only paid $40 each).  They run and look great and I am in the process of upgrading all 3 to Loksound decoders.  Decoder install is not that bad becuase they have NMRA DCC plug and with just a little milling of the front weight, I'm having success.  Non-sound decoder installtion would be a snap.

I don't know about the Proto 1K RS-2's, have never seen one.  I just love those great Kato drives that just hum along.....

Good luck!
