Big Boy question

Anyone know how sharp of a curve an HO big boy can take?

I would venture a guess here, but I think I read it could take a 19".....BUT........will look horrible in doing it.

I would say you would want a minimum of 26" for it to look ok running around a layout.

It depends on the model. The old AHM Big Boys could operate on 18R track because the rear engine pivoted. I'm not sure about the newer models but I would guess they need much wider radius curvers. As for look correct even 26R is a little tight, if you want the engine to look right you would need something in the 40+ radius. This is not to say you can't run them on the tighter curvers and have fun, remember it's your railroad!

The Rivarossi Allegheny, 2-6-6-6 will operate down to 16" radius depending if you use the short or long overhang cab(Both included in package) per MR Feb-02

I think I read the newer rivorrossi's and the trix can take 18" curves.

MR April 02 review of the Trix Big Boy. " The Trix can operate smoothly on curves as tight as 18" radius although with considerable overhang as the instruction booklet warns".

The overhang is very significant for the long locomotives. Bumps cause damage so run at very slow speeds until you have "cleared" the route if you must run on tight turns.

I have a Trix Bigboy.

Yep - works will with a 18" curve but looks so - Oh my god, no !!!

And the overhang at front and rear is horrible.

I would recomend a minimum of 25" more is better

I have gotten my grandfathers Rivorossi Big Boy to take an 18" Raduys curve but it looked severly strained while doing it.
