hey guys i need your insight commnets or what have you... what do YOU think is the better buy or what i should i get a P2K Ontario Northland GP9 (here at the LHS) or try and order in a athearn RTR SP SD45T-2. i really wanted a six axel engien but the ONR GP9 is very nice!, i can't make up my mind at all. anyway what do you guys have to say about it?
derailment? what derailment? All reports of derailments are lies. Their are no derailments within a hundreed miles of here.

Get the SD45T-2 I own one...MAN!!! are they awesome, really heavy too Shock [:O] In fact i'm going to get another one Big Smile [:D]  and once you add some pilot detail, you could be forgiven for thinking your standing beside SP tracks!!!

Diesels aren't my thing, but I suggest you make this decision based on some robust criteria.  You mention six axles.  If that is a strong draw for your, and you can put off the ONR purchase emotionally, then your choice is simple.  If you have a strong hankering for the ONR, and the price is kinda right, ditto.

The GP-9  will take sharper curves and switches , and the SD-45T  runs faster.

The SD-45T was primarily a Southern Pacific engine wheras ALL railroads used GP-9's or 7's.

The 6 axle engines have more 'work's so should cost more. They also prefer 22"radii and #6 turnouts to run on.

If you are an invester, I am out of my league. If you are a model railroader, selecter has it right, What do you want? This is a pleasure hobby, get what you want. I have learned that being in a hurry is a short lived pleasure sometimes. Of course, if you have the budget, get them both.

Having bought locomotives from both manufacturers, I can honestly say that you won't go wrong with either decision.

Athearn RTR is almost as good as Proto. Especially detail wise.

If you want a 6 axle loco, go with Athearn.

Go for the SD45T-2. I have 4 of them and they are beautifully detailed, great running locos.
Ride Amtrak. Cats Rule, Dogs Drool.
