I have been busy with the video camera again - it goes back tomorrow.
For those of you who may not have heard the Tsunami decoders up close, here are a couple of new clips of my IHB 0-8-0s on a 'caboose hop'.
They are both fitted with Medium steam decoders and 3/4 inch oval speakers, and I turned up the volume of the 'rod clank' (CV135).
Short clips part 1 and 2

Now to put together the footage for the light steam Tsunami fitted in the BRC 0-6-0.

Jon,
Great video. Last week I installed a Tsunami(TSU-1000) decoder into my P2K 0-6-0 and today once the mailman arrives, I'll be installing one in my P2K 0-8-0. The overal quality of sound is just amazing....Did you install the traction wheels on your locomotives? I want to install mine tonight, Walthers didn't include the instructions on "how to" in either of my locomotives boxes. I have the traction wheels and the tiny little wrench, but no clear idea of how to....
Michael
Most impressive - both the sound and layout itself. You have done an outstanding job with your structures, signs and scenery. Out of curiosity, how big is your overall layout?
Keep up the incredible work and thanks for sharing it with us!!!

Cliff,
the layout is only 20' long by 18" wide - slightly less area than a sheet of 4'x8'
I've added some clips of the light steam Tsunami fitted into a Heritage 0-6-0, in this case Belt Railway of Chicago #89
Once again, I have turned up the volume on the rod clank (CV135)

Thjanks Michael.
Unfortunately I could only give you a rough guess on fitting the traction tyres. Most of my half dozen Heritage locos are without traction tyres. The only one I have from the new batch was already fitted with the traction tyres when it arrived.
My guess would be to remove the 2 nuts holding the rods to the axle you are replacing. Then undo the screws that hold the plastic base in place - and hope that small springs don't fly everywhere. Hmm on second thoughts, I'd hold back with the replacement and seek guidance from someone who has done it already.
Good luck with it anyway,
GearDrivenSteam wrote:Hay Jon, give us some perspective here. How far away is the video camera? Is the mic on the camera? If it is, that's some really loud sound!
Hi Robert. The camera was on a tripod usually a couple of feet away from the layout, and the mic is on the camera, next to the lens. Remember though that with the zoom and panned shots, the loco in shot could be 10' or more away from the camera.
The 0-8-0 #313 is a really loud engine anyway and what you hear is with the master volume control (CV128 - 0-255) turned down to about 170. The whole tender has been fully sealed and is used as the baffle, with the speaker facing down.
I have put together some extra footage for you, where the camera was sitting on the track a foot or so behind the caboose. This may put things into perspective.

howmus wrote:The sound decoders are improving, but are never going to sound like a real train. The bottom 3 or 4 octaves just aren't there and can't be with a 1" or smaller speaker.
The decoders are improving all the time, Ray. Maybe we should be looking at improving the speakers as well - the technology of the ones on the market is pretty ancient, and the best decoder around still sounds tinny with a crap speaker.

Enjoyed your videos, thanks for sharing! Also enjoyed viewing the diesels and Doodlebug as well.

JonAbsolutely! It would take an entirely new type of technology to be able to produce bass sound from such a small speaker. Maybe some kind of in the ear radio technology where you could be able to reproduce the sound with good fidelity. ????
Newbie here, don't mean to stick my nose in, but isn't there some way to have a subwoofer under the layout? Low frequencies are not directional so our brains/ears wouldn't notice that their placement was static, and not moving.
Pretty sure, if fact, that I just read about this in a recent issue of MRR (in the letters section, IIRC).
Oh, BTW, great layout and videos, Jon, thank you for sharing!
Jon, are the engines the new Bachmanns steamers or decoders that you added? I am sort of happy with my BLI's with the QSI sound. Then again they are the only DCC sound engines I have as well.

Great video clip! The engines sound great and look awesome, as does your layout.
