Wobbling PCM Y6b
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, June 2, 2006 10:47 PM
Wondered if any owners of this loco noticed a pronounced waddle/wobble/rocking or tipping of the boiler at speed step 12 on up. Did I get one that`s out of quarter? Thanks.

I am pretty sure you'd notice an out-of-quarter problem long before speed step 12. You'd see it nearer to 5-7. Could it be the track, a loose axle, a bent one (although you'd notice that by speed step 5-7, too)? Are all wheels bearing weight when you place the loco on a true flat surface...none elevated even 1/32"? Is the boiler body properly affixed to the frame?

Another possibility could be a sloppy worm gear (if it has one) that causes binding periodically as a harmonic to a given speed. I'm fishing, but I can't see faulty quartering only being a problem in the higher speeds.

Can you clip some leads on the tender and run it upside down? watch for a wheel wobble or bent axle then.

Ken.

lube the engine up, all moving parts, plastic compatible grease/oil, get it on some continuous loop of track, and run it slow, and watch carefully, let it run in a while.
This will help wear/polish bearing surfaces for a smoother running.

I would check for wheels wobbling, out of gauge, anything.

If you still find a problem and are not satisfied with the operation of the engine then contact the Service department and they should be able to help you with the problem.
