Dear 4884bigboy,
There are indeed railroad frequencies, the same ones that the railroads use to give crews instructions, report events, and more. Sadly, you can't receive them with your car radio (at least I don't think you can-if someone wants to make my day, just tell me that I can and what frequency to tune to). The United States Government has the radio frequencies divided for all purposes-some for broadcasting, airline, railroad, and boat communications, radio astronomy, and pretty much everything else you could think of to use radio for. The American Association of Railroads (or is it Association of American Railroads???) has the frequencies allocated to railroads divided into 96 channels, from channel 2 through channel 97. The frequencies (for the less radio inclined, each channel corresponds to a specific frequency, just like television transmissions) are from159.81 megaHertz to 161.565 megaHertz at 0.015 megaHertz increments. Unfortunately, you need a special radio, such as the railfan staple of the scanner, to recieve these transmitions.

I hope this has helped,
Daniel
