Food for thought from EM.
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 8:19 PM
Well here I am again, checking in to see whats up and offer up a related topic for thought by all of you. Many years ago the term "DIECAST", only refered to models made of metal, cast in molds and generally of limited quantity. Now the term is used almost universally for any model cast in metal or plastic and even for some very high quality stampings by companies such as "CORGI". Now of course, this would be considered a gross and unforgivable sin by many diehard purist in the hobby. This goes for cars, trucks, planes, trains and ships and there in lies the link to the train hobby.. Your thoughts would be appriciated. Thanks........EM

It was probably easier and more lucrative to use the pewter and pot metals for "die-casting" in years gone by, so we culturally adopted this artifact of earlier economics to mean metal. However, the process could be used to mold wax figurines, compressed papier mache, aluminium, latex, or the plastic of which you speak, to name a few. So, the process has not changed, only the materials, much like in the auto industry, furniture industry, etc.

Die-casting is die-casting, whether with frozen orange juice or melted hockey pucks.
