Worm Gear! HELP!
Posted by CanadianShield on Thursday, March 16, 2006 1:08 PM

Hi Folks.

I purchased 3 N scale Atlas 0-8-0s on ebay which were DOA. I tracked down some new 5 pole motors from micro loco motion and a gear puller. I have successfully removed the worm gears from the old 3 pole motors and chopped down the length of the 5 pole with my dremel.

Where I am stuck is how to put the worm gears back on the new motors! Any tips or help would be awesome!

Do you have a drill press ? if so clamp the motor shaft in a vise directly under the chuck,, align the gear to the shaft and press gently with the drill press chuck, it should slide on easily. if the the hole and shaft are the same size. check that first. There are many ways to do this but this is one for normal people considering what tools they may have around the house. Remember I said clamp the motor shaft not the motor body. If you clamp on the body you'll be pushing the shaft inside the motor, not good. In the real world we just hit it with a big sledge hammer. [banghead][(-D][(-D][(-D]

You may want to look for a company that rents and repairs hand tools.(drill motors, saws and such) I used to work at one and we had a whole array of pullers and arbor presses for doing what your talking about. Probably only cost you a few bucks to have someone do it.

A vise should work well, if you have a vise. (A vise is a tool kind of like a clamp) And as GAPPLEG mentioned earlier, make sure you press the shaft, not the body. Pressing the body of the motor could damage the motor.

A C-clamp will also work, as long as you are careful to apply pressure slowly. Use a good, cast metal clamp, not one of those stamped sheet metal or plastic hunks of junk.

The problem with holding the body and then pressing the worm on is that you'll be transmitting that big pressing force through the ball bearings - bad. I guarantee you those tiny bearings aren't intended to see much axial load, and they will be damaged.

It may be difficult to hold the shaft while pressing the worm on.

Good luck! (don't want to sound too pessimistic, but just trying to save you from damaging the bearings)

Put the motor in dry ice, and heat the worm to 400 to 500 degrees F.
This should let you slide the worm on.

Did you try to order replacement motors from Atlas with the worms already attatched????
