Many layouts with winter and snow areas have been published in magazines over the years. The most amazing scenes were done by Rand Hood in Model Railroader magazine in Jan and Feb 1996. Anyone who is planning a big snow area should read these.

Just go to the MR index of magazines link at the top of this page and search on the keywords winter or snow and you'll find a lot of articles, some about real railroads in the winter (like in Trains magazine) and a lot of modeling articles in MR, RMC, etc.

People use all kinds of stuff to make snow. I've used the Woodland Scenics ground foam snow for small areas and it looks fine. It might a bit expensive for a huge area. I've also sprinkled dry plaster over white latex paint and it looked like snow to me for background scenes.

Edit: Rand Hood's scenes are in the rockies

Jon
