Athearn is obviously "Legendary" in HO Model Railroading.
It only makes sense that it would be a sponsor.

Quite a few manufacturers aren't there. Kadee, Lionel, BLI, just to name 3 of the more popular besides Athearn. Who knows what motivates companies to sponsor or not.

Odds are that they didn't want to feed the kitty for a pretty penny back when the WGH was starting out. Three years ago Athearn probably was still near the very top of the manufacturers' pile and was not yet feeling the pinch of the hobby's downward trend, so they didn't feel it justified to lay out a big cash contribution.
