Oh god. Wow. Whats the reason of this poll? Are you writing a Model railroader book because if you are I am willing to help out your study, but if not, well no answer from me.

My answer would be the same for all of the reasons below:

1. Since teething on a pre-WWII Lionel box car.

2. Since first observing that all the interesting things ran on steel rails.

3. Since starting to operate Lionel as a transportation link, not a loop, even though it was still set up on the living room rug.

4. Since buying my first copy of Model Railroader, which I still have.

5. Since starting my first layout.

Only exception - since starting to collect Social Security.

I'd say since I was nine months old, but that is really the date of my first reported positive response to trains. I have been in the hobby as long as I have been hooking cars together to form a train.

Received a Lionel in 1959, switched to HO in 1966.

I vote BEER as well.

I see a ripple wave in the responses. Seems most old teens, young adults have other interests that override the train gene for a while. No surprises there.

Don't worry, nothing against you personally. I'm one of the anti-polls guys, and was taking a page out of Bob B.'s book, by using the [tdn]

But, let's not let this turn into another one of those threads.

Matt

[Edit: I took that out, as this really isn't a bad poll. I should also re-phrase my description: I'm an anti-uselesspollist.]

To answer your question, I've been in the hobby around 10 years. Funny, though, as I haven't been a railfan but for 7 or so years.

Interesting question. I've been a railfan since childhood, growing up along MoPac's Sedalia Sub in west-central Missouri. I loved toy trains as a kid and even thought it would be cool to have one permanently on a shelf around a room (must have seen it somewhere). But I never knew that scale model railroading existed as a hobby until I was 28 (10 years ago) when I ran across a MR store in a permanent flea market in Orlando, FL while on vacation. There I bought my first issue of MR and I have been hooked ever since. Spent about 2 years collecting HO MoPac equipment, then switched to N scale. I'm presently building my second N scale layout.
