It seems no one has directly answered all of your question, so I will. As previous posters have indicated, HO scale running on N scale track is HO narrow gauge, or, HOn30. HOn30 is a representation of prototypical 30 inch narrow gauge. I am assuming you know the defination of gauge is the distance between the rails. Standard gauge is 4' 8". The narrow gauge that HOn30 represents is 30". There are other narrow gauge measurements as well. There is 36", and 2'. There are others, but they are not as popular. HOn30 therefore breaks down like this: HO= HO scale. n= narrow gauge. 30= 30" which is the width between the rails that HOn30 represents on the prototype. I model in On30. On30 is O scale narrow gauge that is O scale, that uses HO gauge, but represents the same 30" prototype that HOn30 does. HOn30 locomotives are available, although not very popular. To my knowledge, no one makes them on a large enough scale to be cost effective. Here is a link that does offer them, but as you can see, they are costly. http://www.bnfhoby.com/train3-2locomotives.htm <br />If you have the space, and want to model narrow gauge, why not look at On30? It much more cost effective, as there are several companies offering RTR models only a little more than a hundred bucks.
