That's the other thing I wanted to say but didn't - the Proto2000 E units have more detail. But then, I'm not a collector - I want something that looks decent and runs, and run it will, I don't have any shelf queens in my collection. Apart from a couple of older AHM locos that have a certain sentimental value. If it weren't for the deep flanges they'd get decoders and be run though.

The ones you pictured against yours have interiors, glazing, custom/factory paint, nicer detailing, see through grills and fans, and they are new. I would imagine they run out the box as well. It appears they have sprung trucks with much nicer truck detail as well. And what is to be said for the drives?

Anyway, if you're referring to the brass E8 in the link, it looks like she's been thru a long battle. Probably in the $500 range when new. Used brass units like these don't fetch a high price anymore if.........

1. The body is in rough shape.......
2. The unit is equipped with an older, noisy drive...
3. If there are nicely detailed plastic version(s) of the same type of locomotive..
4. The body detail itself is inferior to the plastic version of the brass unit.

Remember, when the highly detailed plastic locomotives hit the HO and N markets back in the early 90s, the used brass units started fetching less money for sellers. Exception would be rare units, or locomotives that had not been produced in plastic. Or the highly detailed HO and N brass units produced in the 90s. Even then deals could be found. A good friend of mine snagged a rare HO brass Amtrak SDP40f on Ebay, in good shape, for about $100........a super bargain! He's repowering it with a Mashima motor..

Many of the brass units from the 1970s and early 80s are what's hitting Ebay. This old war horse looks like one of those units. Consider that the Pennsy E8 is available in plastic from BLI and LIfe LIke P2K. So chances are VERY LIKELY that this brass unit would not be high on many Pennsy modeler's priority lists. If you look carefully, the number boards would have to be cut out and the trucks need detailing parts just to be comparable in appearance to a P2K or BLI unit.!

Top it off, the BLI E8 is equipped with an impressive sound system. So for $200+, which would you pick?

If this were a brass Great Northern "Little Joe", an EMC Santa Fe E-1, or a GE U30CG..........then realistically you might more likely see a $500+ price tag.

If this unit is fetching $800........ than either it's a special value to the buyer..........or the buyer doesn't realize that he or she is paying way too much for an old brass E unit.

BTW: What you're doing above is "Chain Posting", which is quite obvious. This is why some of the members were "razzing" you earlier on other threads.

Guy, Don't worry about gaining stars.......they'll come and you'll see that it's no big deal.

2. I don't knock brass. I'm familiar with brass and actually like it.
3. I pointed out that the Pennsy E8 in the link is an older model, likely from "my teen years". How can I tell?

A. The molded on handrails
B. Solid number boards
C. No "See Thru Grills" and low detailing on the trucks are the giveaways.

This was "The bomb" back then, but no longer, by today's standards. A lot of work would have to be performed for it to have the appearance of a P2K or BLI. Not knocking it......just stating facts.

---We--we?....Who's we? Can't you speak for yourself? From what I've read no one here is trying to discourage you from posting. In fact, the thread involving structures, where you posted those New York City buildings was, IMHO, pretty cool as well as the info on the informative links.

It's your choice, but mixed in with your very good info and photos are those comments that can be easily misinterpreted as being nasty or disrespectful to others. May not be your intent, but that's how some of them have come to be viewed. yes its true, I did have fun and was not trying to insult or come off in a bad way
when I sead we I was talking for some other members that had been scolded
for posting and some were off topic we are human
but thanks for taking the time to input some of your ideas and to check what I sead
I see you are adding answers for what was sead in a bit of a bad time and for you to go back and change what you sead then to what you think now is not very fair
I dont nitpic everything you do (not that I have to)
