I can safely say I have a very understanding wife.

If I could ,just get her to help with my hobby, life would be perfect.

Wow! Except for the "moving down south" part ( I was already here ), that sounds A LOT like me and my wife! It is SO NICE to have a wife that gives you the freedom to enjoy this hobby of ours!

I have a very understanding wife. And in return I am a very understanding husband. It takes both to last over 20 years.

I set my wife straight before we got married...I told her that i'm a train nut..i spend a lot of time with them and if she don't like it then there is no sense in us getting married...she has never complained about them ever and i'm thankful she puts up with them...just don't forget to bring her some flowers once in awhile and spend time with her and everything is gonna be alright...chuck

I am fortunate to have an understanding wife who is very supportive with this hobby of mine. When I first started into the railroad hobby many years ago, she would always accompany me to the LHS and even bought a few engines for me. Through the years she still shows her interest and is my best critic.

Mine is also very supportive. She painted the background scene on the wall behind the layout. She seems to enjoy the railroad museums we go to. She enjoyed the "Tour of the Line" ride on the Algoma Central several years ago. She liked our trip on Amtrak's Capitol Limited a couple of years ago. While that was not her first train ride, it was the first time in a sleeping car and dining car. Her grandfather was a conductor on the C&EI but unfortunately he passed on way before I even knew she existed.

My wife has been generally supportive, but I can’t think of a time when I got so out of control where I had to resort to using a feeble line like “hey - it could be drugs, gambling…”. If that ever occurs, I’d say she has every right get in my face about it. I depend on her to make sure my hobby doesn’t become an obsession.

The real key to her continued support and interest in my hobby is that I never put her in a position that would require her to be “understanding”. The day this hobby becomes more important than my marriage and/or family is the day I’ve mentally checked out.

PLEASE DON'T TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY ANYONE...

It's just that this original post seems like part of a "Columbo" plot to me...

"Honestly Looootenant. Does this seem like the sort of E mail a loving husband would post if he was intending to run his wife over with his Rivarossi Big Boy"?

THANKYOU FOR NOT TAKING THIS SERIOUSLY.

My wife is the cheap one, I'm not.

She was one of 8 kids, and growing up her family had to be very frugal.

During the years, if we had tight financial situations or credit problems, it really was my fault, not hers.

Any hobby I ever had, cost money ......these trains, guns/shooting/hunting, dirt bikes and atv's, etc. (my tavern days, T & A and otherwise, ended the day my fist child was born)

Her hobbies are crochet'ing baby blankets for everyone she knows, and playing senior league softball. She still uses her softball glove from college and does not want another.

She spends like no money. I feel guilty.

Still, she puts up with my bs.

Yea, I'm lucky.

Just had a thought.

Perhaps we should take some time today and say "thank you" to someone who deserves it?

Well, for my birthday last year she took me to a LHS and said pick out something! I got a P2K GP9! She does one stroke painting, crafts, and now she and our grown daughter are getting into scrape booking and I encourage those persuits so she "looks the other way" on my rail activities. She gets nit picky about tools not put up and strewn about on the layout, but that's about as bad as it gets. On the other hand I am not a big spender in the hobby. I do a lot of tinkering that doesn't cost much.

My wife is an angel.......... she puts up with me, our 2 month old twin daughters, and our 2 year old 85 pound lab that really needs doggie downers because he is as hyper as they come. And yes she is very understanding even though I bend the truth from time to time........ oh that loco.......... I've had that one a long time. Yesterday is a long time...... Isn't It? [;)]

All kidding aside, she is my best friend and I love her. Especially when she lets me sleep through the midnight feedings when I have to work the next day.

I feel your pain. My 2 year old lab mix is the same way. But, I love him anyway. Plus he keeps my wife away from the trains[:D].

My wife is very understanding of my love for trains. On my end, I don't get to carried away with the hobby. I take time to coach my little ones' soccer team and make sure that her and the kids are taken care of and that they get the majority of my attention.

She has gone to shows with me, but not the last few. She always loves to see what I am working on and is very patient with the idea that my layout may never be done.

Another side of this is that, of the couples we are friends with, the husband's are addicted to video games. The wives in these couples are very discouraged because the husbands are so focused on the game that they forget how much time goes by. This helps my wife to appreciate my trains even more.

One nice thing about the hobby is that I can go up and read a book to the kids, or ask my wife how her day was while the glue is drying.

I have a very understanding wife so I consider myself lucky. She has her hobbies (Quilting) and I have mine. I don't go to her shops and quilting shows and she doesn't go to mine however we are both very supportive of each others "addiction". The only down side is that when we moved into a new basement with a townhouse above to keep the trains dry, she insisted that I finish her side of the basement first. I guess she suspected that if I finished the train room first, she wouldn't get her quilt room. She was probably right.

My wife has been very understanding - especially since the layout has been moved from the living room of our apartment to the garage (now railroad room) of our new house. I do make sure to warn her of large purchases, and she does have veto power.

My first wife of 20 yrs , while alive, put up with all of the various hobbies in which I was involved. Gas 1/8 scale R/C car racing, photography, model cars, drag racing, electronics, etc. My second wife put up with my electronics, A/V, computers and Corvette Club shows and racing. But when I got into Model Railroading the S..t hit the fan. After many fights over room for the trains and $$$ we ended the marrige. Now no one has the last word but ME! I might be a little lonely and broke, but at least I have my train room and more time to plan my layout!
