Take a Model Train to Work Day - Boom or Bust?
Posted by mononguy63 on Friday, November 4, 2005 8:08 PM
So who all participated in the much-anticipated Take a Train to Work Day today, and how was it received? I took in a piece of flextrack and set up a short steam-powered train. It generated a little conversation in the morning and mostly odd looks through the day.

I'd like to hear how many actually participated and what kind of reactions you got.

I didn't do it this year, but last year I took my kato SD90, and it wasn't toopopular, and this year I have even less time to show it off, and probbably a less appreciative audience, so I just didn't do it.

I worked all day in my train room, does that count?? Of course no exposure, except Big Girl, but then she sees it almost every day.

From my perspective bust, but the only place I went today was the grocery store. No trains there.[swg]

I think a lot of us cannot even bring models to work. A BLI DCC engine has 'memory' and thus the 'network nazi/security' folks will regard it as a 'recording device' . I would have to to get 'property pass' - not worth the bother! The security/safety folks get 'hiper' about a coffee pot of crock pot being plugged in! My understanding is I am going to have to get a 'camera pass' for my new cell phone as it is a recording device.....

I took in a diorama that I built to practice scenery techniques. Nobody but me saw it. I am going to leave it in my office permenantly, so in the future it will surely be seen.

Judging from the responses, a single day, does not a hobby promotion make. I think we need something like "Take a Train to Work Decade". At least some people might notice.[;)]

If we were really serious about promoting our hobby, we would have "Plan a Train Show At Your Local Mall Day". Or, we could follow the lead of Boston, Atlanta, and others, and have "City Wide Layout Open House Day".

Convert the public to train lovers one person at a time.[:D][8D]
