Headlights & Ditchlights

I have been out of the hobby for a while and have recently picked up a few locomotives to detail. I am looking for advice on realistic headlights & ditchlights. I have a few Proto 2000s and some old Athearns I would like to spruce up and I'm not too happy with the factory lighting. Any advice? I am modeling the walkway- mounted ditch lights and most of the kits or models I have seen have an unrealistic wire running out the backside. Any advice, articles, tips? I really don't know where to start.

Haven't tried it but you might find that fibre optics from a light source in the body are the best way to go...?
Let us know how you get on...
